I went down too my favorite air museum today, Chino's Planes of Fame air Museum. They have a wonderful P-38L Porky II (Formerly known as Joltin Josy) and today, as I approached the hanger, I saw Porky had a friend. Whats this? Do my eyes descieve me? Those engines have no chin!!!!! YES! Its true!!!!

Glacier Girl!!!! HERE IN SO-CAL!!!! At Chino!!!!!!!! I spoke too Steve Hinton, the pilot of Porky and he said she just flew in Friday! I dont know how long she will be in town, but if ANYONE is a fan of the P-38, you MUST GO TO CHINO ASAP!!!!!!!

So here I am drooling over this wonderful bird. The most EMACULATE aircraft I have EVER seen. Not a single dent to be seen, not a speck of dirt. I nearly wept in joy being able to touch this wonderful aircraft. The same one that was trapped 100's of feet in ice. Just an outstanding sight.

As you can see from the photo's, she is attracting quite a cround for a Sunday! You guys better hurry.

So I hear the grumble of a large engine near the Tarmac and look that way from the P-38's and see the tail and wings of a P-40, but a Radial engine in the front.... WTF?

http://www.gibbageart.com/images/P1010023s.JPG

Yes ladies and gentalment, thats the ONLY flyable P-36 in the world, revving up just after a flight. Steve Hinton's new toy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I spoke to Steve about his reviewing of the Il2 P-38, and he said he has been very busy (I can see why!!!) but will get too it soon. As I spoke with him next too this wonderful P-36, they fired up the engine again to do some ground testing. Man, what a THRILL it is to be mear FEET away from this ROARING radial. Its funny the things you notice being this close, like hearing the whoosh whoosh of the blades at low RPM, or not hearing much of anything at high RPM http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I even got a short video of it cranking over! No sound =( Need a better digicam...

Wow, all this excitement, and I almost forgot my mission! I went down there spacifically to take photo's of the J2M3 Raiden's cockpit, the only one left in the world. So I can help SaQsoN and his team make the J2M series flyable... Unfortunatly the J2M's canopy was rather glazed and frosted, but I hope they help him.

Man, what a day. I have been to Chino many times and so far this was by FAR the best experance ever. Wish some of you guys were there!!!

Again, if your in the area, you MUST go see these new additions. They also just got a 3rd Spitfire (Mk XIV I think) with blue and white roundals. Great stuff, and I am glad I can share for those people who cant make it.

Thanks Gibbage. Excellent shots!

I had the priviledge to have a very close look at Glacier Girl this summer when I went to visit the incredibly small little hangar they have there in Midd*****rro Kentucky. You'd never believe that this airport had a historic aircraft much less a P-38 there. She's a real beauty!

The Spitfire is probably a SEAC or RAAF Spitfire. If it was small roundels with dark blue and light blue then its a SEAC. If its dark blue and big white centers then its RAAF (Australian).

Small dark blue on the outside, light blue on the inside. Unfortunatly I did not take many pics of it. I had other interest's at the moment http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Its hard to belive that glacier girl can actually fly after seeing her when she was found under all that ice.

I wish they'd pull my grandfather's F-5B (P-38J with a camera nose) up. It's just off the coast of a certain area in Italy, in less than 150 feet of water, with maybe three feet of silt on top. Missing an engine, but otherwise completely intact. Probably well preserved, too, considering the silt covering, and the tidal activity there is at a minimum. Plus, it's near the mouth of a river, so the salt content of the water is low there.

He just needs to find somebody who's willing to pull it up. Considering how many hundreds of feet of ice they went through to get Glacier Girl, you think a third of that in water and a couple feed of sand would be pretty easy. Plus the airframe isn't as trashed.

Anybody knows a restorer with money and interest in possibly the only recon P-38 still salvageable (and it's in good condition, too), email me and I'll put them in contact with my grandfather.

Or the F model. It's kind of hard to have PF without a P-38F or G. They did a lot of the combat in the Pacific.

An F would be lovely...they were sleeker than the J and L's and it'd fit with the PTO quite nicely I would think.

Well, don't think all they did was clean the plane up and give it a new coat of paint. It was completely restored

I got to see a Discovery Wings bit on GG this summer. I saw Hinton take her for a flight and it was just incredible

Yeah, I know that, I've seen the web site and the video's etc. Im amazed that it survived under the ice and the wasn't crushed so much the components were useless or to badly bent to restore and the fact they could restore it after taking such a beating.

Makes you wonder if they've thought about digging any of the other planes up that landed there.

Sort of on topic, did anyone see the discovery program about the B29 they found in some remote arctic location, restored it right there after bringing in new engines to only have it burn up just as they were about to fly it out of there? Very sad story.

The Glacier Girl is definately a sweet looking plane!

I think it's interesting to note that they painted it in a lighter green color compared to the standard olive drab used on other restored P-38s.

WOLFmondo: yeah, I remember that show. Daryl Greenameyer, of Reno and Mojave Air Races fame and a bunch of guys went to Greenland to get a B-29 that had put down somewhere airworthy before the snows started. Only had a few weeks frost free, got the P%Ws working, didn't really have time to clear much of a strip, had to taxi very fast to avoid bogging the gear down in the mud, jolted the APU in the after fuselage loose, which caught fire. They all exited the ship okay and stood by while they watched it burn.

Greenland does not give up its treasures easily.
