View Full Version : A "Community Generated / 1c Approved" Patch

Hi All;

Probably should have posted this here first and in General D instead of ORR, but if interest is shown in the community I'd like to press 1c for their support...

I'd like to submit for the communities consideration with naturally 1c's final approval a proposal which I think might be of value to enhancing the sim, putting us "all" on par, yet at the same time not taking up virtually any of 1c's time.

That being, the generation of a "Community Patch" to have final assembly of an .exe performed by one of our skilled members, or better still 1c......To have it generated by the community at large.....and to finally have it distributed on the Ubi website.

What would be contained would be minor things that can at times really enhance the sim. What I would initially propose it contain would be the following....

1. New "Skin Voids" where needed. The community has generated some excellent "Voids" to be used in the making of skins with corrected lines and rivets, etc.. One for each plane we could get them for would be added, selected and approved by the community skinners.

2. New "Default Skins"...Some of the "Default skins" are very lacking by today's standards. So here one for each plane would be added. In many cases simply a generic skin, for say aircraft that saw many fronts. Some like the Ki-61 for example corrected to show the unit that was issued that plane initially. Not all need to be replaced (winter stuka an example) some do. Again chosen by our resident skinners.

3. New "Default Markings".....Frankly the old markings are terrible, many of the PF planes sporting markings that are weathered looking much better. In kind often numbering and such is off. Here I'm not proposing something as complex as MatManager, though that could be utilized to some degree.

4. New "Squadron insignia & markings".....here, correct squadron insignia could be corrected.

5. New "Included Skins".....Here I would suggest that in addition to the default, we add "community approved" skins of various "units" historically correct. These are put in the skins folder, once again the finest of the community selected and they made generic to that unit (not a particular aces skin).

5a. Pilot skins as well as in uniforms and such.

6. "Speech packs".....This grouping would include the many "historical" speech packs the community has generated. These would NOT be "accented" in the players native language, yet the actually language of the region....A good example "Java Dutch".....Only those required where community generated speech packs are superior to the sim provided.

7. Samples\Sounds files......Currently we have a few in this folder which can be used during briefings.....I suggest here we add some famous speeches ex. "Roosevelt's speech on the attack of pearl harbor", "Japanese declaration of war" etc.. Also, we would add other "sound effect tracks" simply 30 second clips of combat, bombs falling, planes doing fly bys etc..

8. Music Files.....Here I propose we set up "Background radio traffic" by both nationality and region...also civilian radio. So what you would have is a file say in "In Flight" for each nationality--in each region it fought (so enemy traffic can be added)...and also civilian radio broadcasts.

Utilities:
9. Regarding 8 above I'd suggest we also add IL2FBwav.exe "pre-set" and a simple script I generated and .cmd files that allow you to change that background music in flight (once in the sim).

10. Any other utility such as bombing tables, perhaps a mini-mat-manager, bright conversion tool for skinning, Object viewers...etc..

11. Documentation files.......Here we could add in tables and files such as ammo loadouts, plane/unit histories, historical maps whatever.

<span class="ev_code_YELLOW">Here is how I would hope this would go....If we get 1c's approval to go ahead with this, the community would start proposing what is to be added in the various forums, and the files would be built.

Once done, the community will vote on the content, and it will be assembled as to directory\file....At that point it would either have a 1c generated (preferred) or community generated .exe made and be tested.

Finally "approved by 1c" and distributed on the Ubi site as a patch and any mirror site wishing it.........For free.

The point, to improve the little aspects of the sim that only a few of us find scattered pieces of...To make it publicly available in a central patch...and bring all who download it up to date with an enhanced sim.....Hence all playing the same sim.

Thoughts?...Opinions?...Additions?</span>

I think this is an excellent idea. Basically a "noob starter kit". I would suggest not adding any files which may be impacted by future patches so that this community add-on remain valid regardless of future enhancements.

Well "nothing" in this patch is required for anyone to have IL2FB-AEP-PF running at 100%...All of these items are simply "visual and audio sim enhancements".

I myself love the added confusion background radio traffic adds...However, there is nothing saying if you had this patch you would have to use it.

Same for the rest. What it does do though is add those little things that really make it immersive or enhance it having no effct on the sim.

That's another point as well...This patch has NOTHING to do with FM/DM...or open sourcing. All items things that are added randomly by the players.....Here would be a central source to boost all of ours to the same level. I feel the added info section a nice touch too.

Why not educate as you play http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It's a great idea. Unfortunately, I feel rather skeptical about 1C even considering it.

i guess i shouldnt post what i was going to, but in very very mild terms bad idea and kind of irrelivent as most of this stuff no one listens to anyways or bothers to read, as well as accuracy issues and things of that nature................but on the other hand im sure other ppl could do a better job on some of this stuff other than 1C.........but then we will get into the fight between the luftwhiners, ameriwhiners, and of course the japwhiners...........lose lose situation

A good idea, however it will require a couple of dedicated individuals to organize/execute the operation. Generally speaking, there has been very little interest by Ubi or 1C in such community enhancements.

For example, they could have hired Aces (Mat Manager) long ago, but didn't. His magnificent collection/offerings of varied historical acft markings and weathering, etc, have vastly improved the historical accuracy, detail, and realism of the acft(appearance) in IL2/FB/PF.

Likewise, they have on many occasions been offered the "FREE" services of the community Movie-Makers in creating FREE marketing movies/trailers, but such offers have been ignored.

Opinions/Actions Can change with experience, however, so I wish you luck. I would gladly contribute my collection(s) of "In-Flight" WWII civilian radio entertainment files(seven or eight, maybe more, each running about 30 minutes or so in duration)...appropriately degraded to reflect realistic in flight radio reception quality, of course. Samples:
WW2 Radio Entertainment-European Theater(American)#1 (http://members.cox.net/fliegeroffizier/WW2Radio.WAV)
WWII Radio Entertainment Pacific Theater 1945(Mixed Japanese, American, British)#2 (http://members.cox.net/doolittle80/WW2RadioPacific1945.WAV)

Its a good idea Billfish but most of it has already been implemented by 3rd party programs.

Utilities like Mat Manager, IL2Compare, IL2Wingman, Hardball's Aircraft Viewer, Skinmans Skin program, IL2 STAB as well as various speach and pilot skin packs ect, ect have most of this stuff covered already.

What we really need is a combined utility that puts the best elements of it all together so you don't coninually have to swap programs.

I agree with you that new voids and new default skins would be appropriate. Most of the other stuff has been covered to a greater or lessr extent by the community and can be fond at the "Sturmovik Essentials" (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=51910959) link

That would be great, yet is way beyond me. However what this is meant to do is not replace those programs you mentioned, yet utilize them in one big patch/add-on....So the average person who gets frustrated finding them (usually stumbling across them), downloading, installing etc...Can simply do it in one big patch.

I mean, how many out there have all the speech packs, background sounds, il2fbwav, object viewer...etc. etc. all you mentioned? Not as many as there could be.

All great stuff, the point to get as much as is reasonably possible into 1 easy download and install.

Nothing more http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

An excellent idea, LeBillfish - I've been pursuing something along those lines for a while now.

Having Ubi or 1C hosting the Package would be a nice bonus, but there's no reason why we shouldn't put together a centralised 'third party community kit' even without their formal endorsement.

For the last month it's been my 'side project' (besides my freelance work and flying) to start putting together a 'complete IL2 documentation', something of the order and magnitude of the beloved Red Baron manual/book.

Such a document package would contain not only game specific information for new players, but also a complete historical listing of each plane (complete with pilot experience snippets, loadout details, and historical significance and reccomended tactics), detailed sections on navigation, on Complex Engine Management, on combat, and on tactics for flying online (particularly with a group or wingman on comms).

I'm talking approximately 150 pages worth of information here http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Definitely not a trivial task. Also, I'd like to offer a complete set of training tracks (for the above topics, as well as individual aircraft familiarisation), with training officer voice-over (using the radio chat function within sturmovik).

I'd be interested in making it part of any community package that gets put together. Heck, my eventual aim is to get 1C to hire me for the BoB documentation http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif None of this fiasco with the PF documentation being a direct clone of FBs.

I'd be happy to send a few drafts of the pages I have on the board at the moment - if you're interested, PM me.

If I were doing it as part of a community effort, then being able to draw on the knowledge and perhaps voice-acting talents of the people 'round here, then I'm sure we'd be able to get the thing done quite quickly, and to a high standard.

Cheers,
Junko 'Junkers' Kimura

I agree Totally....dude. It is much more mature than calling them "youngster" or "moron", neither of which would be appropriate in an online forum, however justifiably well-earned such terms might be.

It is always best to be courteous...and mature...while getting ones point across in as few words as possible.

Meanwhile, on the main point of this thread, JumkoIfurita's project seems Massive, and would be a great asset for the community.

JumkoIfurita.......That is exactly the kind of stuff I'd like to see in this, but I'm guessing you're already talking a gigantic document....

Sadly I think this is going to have to be targeted to the magic 100Mb number, and if my Ki-61 info gives me any indication, I'd assume you well exceed that alone......However...

If you are making that kind of effort my guess is you would be invaluable to sorting out or adding to the PDF type of manual (the real life facts and figures one)...that came with FB and updating it to it's minimal theme...That "Advanced Manual" as a PDF already 2.7Mb...Updated perhaps 4-5....That would work and allow room for other things as well.

Also as part of this patch I think it would be great to include a readme which also lists any links we can find....and other patches and downloads. A massive manual like you are building would be an excellent inclusion.

Finally, if you need anything on the Ki-61, Info on the first units using it in Papua New Guinea and events there...as well as the IJAAF in general please feel free to contact me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I wished all of this had success. But knowing UBI/1C traditional interest in incorporating new default skins, UI improvements, marking enhancements, etc... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

If it doesn't work, here I have another project with the same viability: http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Excellent idea, though it's awfully late in the IL2 series to have a good chance of happening, especially if 1C/UBI were to oficially support it.

This would be a great idea for BoB. Have 1C ask some of the beta testers and community 'experts' for things like skins, markings and documentation has worked very well for some other closed-source games (The "Combat Mission" series is one example). It's really just outsourcing some of the work that the community will be doing after the game release anyway!

Ok, we've established that 1C getting involved is just not going to happen and I suspect it might have as much to do with support or contributor copyright/paperwork than sheer ambivilance.

Why do you need 1C other than hosting and perhaps the ease of directing newcomers? I say get it organized and offer it anyway maybe even without the patches if necessary.

I for one would download it because I don't have the stamina to wade through 90% of these utilities (UQMB being and exception http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) or the time to do so unfortunately.

I wish you the best of luck and if you manage to get something accomplished I will be first in line for it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
