There are a couple of companies already selling Photographic scenery for the new FSX simulator
Just Flight have got some screens of how this will look in the sim. Unfortunately there are no detailed terrain shots, I would have liked to have seen some of these, especially as the terrain mesh (terrain height data) is supposed to be a lot more 'accurate' in the new sim.

Here are some shots of some towns though, and they look very promising. The resolution seems a lot higher than the older VFR scenery for FS2004, also the colours are a lot more realistic, the old VFR looked as if the colours had been largely reduced.

Shame on you all, you can't go round calling it the UK anymore it's politicaly incorrect, the PC version should be the Ethnic Minority Country..

Whooaw http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif That last photo above has the town where I work in it on the left and I live just beyond at the back of the photo. Thats the River severn and Welshpool with Welshpool airfield in the centre just under the aircraft. Amazing detail, I must get hold of that scenery just so I can buzz the house http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Photo real sceneries are great for VFR flying. I had the megascenery for the Pacific Northwest for FS2000 and I loved to cruise around in a Cessna 172 for hours.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Terrain Mesh explained:

Terrain mesh is much better than I first thought in the new sim. There is only 1m between data points on the new mesh.

I'll explain what this means: Scenery is made up by draping ground textures over a mesh. This mesh is built up as a net of data points spaced a certain distance apart, each of these providing an elevation point for the net (mesh). There is 1m between these points at the highest possible mesh resolution in FSX.

I don't know whether FSX contains height data for the whole world at 1m resolution, I doubt it in fact, but it's good to know that it allows for this high resolution. There are lots of companies releasing add-on scenery, and this means there is plenty of space for future developments in add-on scenery. The currently availabe add-on photo scenery for FSX only has 9.6m mesh resolution.

EDIT: I juist noticed in that review posted earlier in the thread that there is a noticeable difference with a 2m setting for Terrain mesh, so it seems like (at least for some areas) this data is included down to 2m resolution.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I read the engine can actually handle mesh scenery at a res of up to 7CM per pixel

7 CENTIMETERS per pixel

they say world mesh scenery at that resolution would take up more than 200 gigs of space.

To clarify:
I believe that the spacing between mesh data points is (at highest) 1m. This means that the spacing between the data points that build up the terrrain mesh is at best 1m.
The resolution of the scenery that is draped over those elevation data points is at its highest 7cm per pixel. This means that (at highest) 1 pixel in the sim represents an area of 7cm on the ground.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
