F6F is one of most ugly things that lifted off the ground in aviation history. Even F4F, another Grumman monstruosity, is somehow likable, with its biplane look and classic engine sound.
Strangely F6F had one of the most interesting engine sounds, in absolute contrast with its look. I don't know why, probably because of the supercharger disposition, F6F makes a high pitch sound (before passing the observer) completely different from Corsair. It's almost like a jet.

Ignorant infant!!! The Hellcat was more than sexy enough to be the safest fighter of WWII, in terms of casualties per combat hours, and it would have been even higher rated if it had not been used to land on carriers. If the USN hadn't been so selfish and hogged 'em all, the Soviets would have forgotten all about the Airacobra after the first squadron tried out the Big Blue Cat, and the Luftwaffe's finest could have forgotten all about any plans for living after the war.

It was the easiest plane in the US inventory to fly and maintain, it could take tremendous amounts of damage and still get its pilot home alive, the six fifties gave it some serious punch, it could turn with anything short of the Ki-27 Nate long enough to kill it, and it had the necessary speed and accelleration to catch an opponent. Lots more pilots kissed it than any Mustang (it had a cooler cowling after a mission, so that MAY have been a factor).

It was designed for a purpose and a function, not to be some painted up tart. It was the mount of the best fighter pilots of the war, evidenced by the fact that the Allies' highest single sorty record for kills were achieved in it (nine kills by David McCampbell, who also got seven kills on an earlier sorty in the Hellcat), and a check of the survival rates of USAAF fighter pilots against the same opposition (ALL the top USAAF aces in the Pacific were killed, wounded, or at least badly sieved by their Japanese opponents at least once, whereas their European based brethren only lost one 15+ kill [Hofer] ace in air to air combat; Navy/Marine aviators had a significantly better record in the Pacific, even throwing in the Wildcat/Buffalo record). Unfortunately, George Marshall, no doubt remembering how the Marines got all the glory in WWI, threatened to resign if the Navy/Marines got too involved in the ETO. This extended to fighter squadrons operating out of southern England, supplementing the Thunderbolt groups that were initially less than effective below 20,000 ft.

Think of the Hellcat as being like the girl in high school who wasn't the hottest babe in the class, but who you knew was smart, caring, capable, and still for some unknown reason, thought you were worthy of respect and love. Funny thing about her was, you always knew she'd look good, she wouldn't get all fat and sullen on you, and she'd continue to take care of you, as long as you weren't a complete jerk. If that ain't sexy, son, you don't know what is.

Now, see what happens when you push an old codger's buttons?

"Here's your new Mustangs, boys. You can learn to fly'em on the way to the target. Cheers!" - LCOL Don Blakeslee, CO, 4th FG, March, 1944

How the hell anybody can think they are even slightly unattractive is beyond me, let alone ugly, I would admit that the Spit is probably the prettiest, and can except that the Wildcat/Hellcat/Bearcat probably might not make the top 10 for some (Although for me they do) but to actually think they are "Ugly"? that has to be either mental instability, or the fact that most who are bashing have LW planes in their sig, which indicates to me that it's more childish Ameri-bashing than an opinion based on what their eyes tell them.

I personally feel that the late 109's and 190Ds are ugly. The same design used for a decade or so since the first designs were used in the spanish civel war for the 109...Its like the ugly wife that has black an blue eyes from where her husband has been abusing her(the model) for the past 10 years... but thats just my opinion, could be wrong.

This carrier based fighter had alot to do with turning the tables on Japanese air dominance in the Pacific theater.

Like the warthog, I understand its pilots loved it and thought it was rather beautiful since it brought them home.

Now this is ugly;

They shot down two Bf-109Gs and 1 Fw-190A. There was the loss of one Hellcat to AA, and one to enemy aircraft (although I've read that it was brought down when it struck a German plane it had just shot up).

LOL, the hellcat was a beauty! It was unique among US warbirds. Built at the Grumman "Ironworks", she was as tough as nails. And had a sound like no other airplane. Apparently there were only 15 exhaust ports for 18 cylinders! So they had to "group" some together....
Quite a cool sounding airplane. AND, it had a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine. What could be better?

TO me, its not nearly as ugly as a Stuka, 109, or TB3. Some of the early US torp bombers were damn ugly though, and the Hellcat I would not want a pic of on my desktop, but I would NOT call it the least sexy. I think that title goes to the STuka.

Here you go, Buzz.

http://bollox.freewebspace.com/images/peaches.jpg

I see the Stuka being mentioned a couple of times as not being sexy. True to the nth degree...but at least it had character. I could recognise a Stuka when I was about 3yrs old. Nah....the Hellcat has no aesthetically redeeming features at all.

As long as it puts lead in enemy planes - that is all that matters. A flying turd - who cares. As long as it gets kills.

For the record - sexy it is not - but it does look functional. Althought not overly-aesthetic in appearance, it does look it is ready to fight - even when on the ground, sitting still, with gear down.

The peach is definitely the least sexiest fruit ever. In Lixma's pic it looks like a hairless nutsack so its definitely not for me.

I got to say, I returned from visiting the National Museum of Aviation in Penasacola last week, and while I wouldn't say the Hellcat and Wildcat are ugly, they certainly aren't the best looking planes on the block. On the other hand, the two corsairs and the P-40 they had on display looked very nice.

I'm from Texas and its pretty ugly to me. It doesnt have the aerodynamic sleekness of later fighters or the quaintness of prewar designs. Its just a squatty plane with a big engine and a mid war cockpit. P-38 is awesome, best looking fighter of the war. Actually all American radial planes were kindof ugly. The LA-5FN is way sexier than the flying barrel with wings called the P-47.

I definately wouldn't say it is a sexy plane but it certainly has its charm. It's looks sort of remind me of a bumble bee, It shouldn't be able to fly but it can and does. And when it's zooming around you definately take notice.

And it's a carrier plane too! Which definately adds to its appeal.

Tubby bastages like the wildcat and hellcat bring a smile to my face.

I'll take two.

first the jug was a safer ride than the hellcat and thats even considering the dangerous ground attacks added in too. check the records of both planes....survivability was higher in jug than any other plane. it was considered the safest ride of the war... second the corsair is just plain gorgeous. german planes had that evil rough mean look that just says ....GO AHEAD MAKE MY DAY. most german planes looked cool. some of the plainest boringest ? wildcat hellcat buffalo...hands down. russian planes...middle of the road...except the yak series which i still say to this day was STOLEN from the allies....its a mustang in disguise! right down to the undercowl thingy . dead ringer for a stang. so stangs and yaks both looked good too. but yea the hellcat was boring. oh the bearcat too...

The issue is sexiness, Hellcat. If you haven't seen one fly, you may not fully appreciate the beauty of that deep blue high gloss paint job. It announced to all who saw it "Camouflage? Camouflage is for sissys! We don't need no stinkin' camouflage!" just as surely as the bare metal look of the late model Mustangs and Thunderbolts.

If a husky, well proportioned athlete is sexy, then the Hellcat is sexy. The Mustang is Tom Cruise; the Hellcat is the young Sean Connery.

I don't like the look of the FW190s, they appear to me like the shape of hard working evil, something very sinister and unholy about them. Not like the Me./Bf. 109s which still possessed throughout their series' that appearance of the pre-war fun and excitement of the popular civilian air races (even though the racing version was totally different). Me.210s and 410s are horrifingly ugly, and can you make the pilot more vulnerable please? 110s are nice, i probably wouldve flown one of those on looks alone if i had to choose a German fighter. 129s look teutonic and fatalistic to me. 262 was pretty slick and modern however.

Soviet fighters are all dreadfully boring, the only one with any sort of real personality are the red wing colored Mig-3s. La-5+ are good looking because they had such aerodynamic engine cowlings and spinners, the rest of the plane is sort of blah. Yaks are all blah, perfect aerodynamics but just spiritless weapons of war. I always thought the IL-4 was a nice looking bomber though.

Japanese fighters all look the same to me.

The P-63 or whatever, the Black Widow, was an awesome plane (i have a spot for two engined planes). That F7F which i had never heard of before looked great as well. Most early war naval fighters looked like death traps, and mid war fighters have that classic "everything and the kitchen sink" American approach to fighter design.

British fighters have for some reason never really impressed me either way at all. Everyone says the Spitfire is the most beautful plane of the war; shrug i guess. It has nice rounded wings.
