This is the plane I've been waiting for most too. It's not so much a beautiful aircraft, it's the powerful, menacing look. It just looks all business, I've always loved it.

The Typhoon is my favourite bird of the war.

"Menacing" is exactly the right words. Big, blunt and scary looking also come to mind.

Not the best dogfighter though; of the 3300 "Tyffies" produced they only scored 246 aerial kills. Most of those were down and dirty on the deck, usually overhauling opponents in a stern chase. The Typhoon could outrun almost anything on the deck until mid 1944.

The pic looks like a very early 1944 Typhoon Mk 1B, with a 2260 hp Sabre IIC engine (and 4 bladed prop), but without the larger Tempest style tailplane, which was fitted to Tyhoons around late January 1944. With the Sabre IIC and the 4 bladed prop she should be able to hit 415-420 mph.

The sad news is that the Typhoon model for IL2 was rejected as unworkable because of the large amount of bugs in it. Still, the modeler was really using it as a practice run for the Tempest, which apparently IS going to make it.

Still my dream for the Typoon would of been for 3-4 different models

1) 1942 Typhoon MkIA 'Razorback' with 3 bladed prop, 2,100hp Sabre I, 4 cannon and 'square' style canopy.
1b) 1942 Typhoon Mk1A with 12 .303s http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

2) Early 1943 Typhoon Mk1B. "Rear view" Bubbletop with the heavy framed cockpit, solid style aerial, "Austen 7" car style door, 3 bladed prop, 2,180hp Sabre IIA
2b) Late 1943 Typhoon MK1B Bubbletop with whip aerial and clear view canopy

3) Early 1944 Typhoon Mk 1B. Proper 'sliding hood' bubble top cannopy, 2,260hp Sabre IIc driving the 4 bladed Rotol prop, Tempest style tail plane (to compensate for the extra torque) and the altered elevator and rudder mass balances, which helped with vibration and altered the c.o.g slightly rearwards, helping with stability.

I just love how there are over 80 views on a personal thread, lol.

We all know that Ice loves Tempests and other british planes...I love the Tempest and other british planes so I figured I better take a look...

They are impressive. Assuming the late spit and Tempest make it, I think the Typhoon will be my most missed aircraft in this game. I really like the 1942-early 1944 scenarios and the Tempest fits that perfectly.

The figures for the Tempests maximum level flight speed is 432 MPH at 18,400 feet.

However, this is with the Sabre IIA at +9lbs boost, not at Sabre IIB +11 lbs, like they operated from September 1944.

Closterman and several other pilots also have references to Sabres running in squadron service at +13lbs but I haven't seen any figures for the flight testing at +13lbs.

Here is a Closterman quote;

" Nothing was left undone to give the Tempest a maximum performance at medium and low altitudes. Special auxiliary tanks were designed even, with perspex connecting pipes, to fit under the wings. Quite extraordinary attention was paid to the rivetting, the joints and the surface polish. The result was a superb combat machine.
It had a thoroughbred look and, in spite of the big radiator which gave it an angry and wilful appearance, it was astonishingly slender. It was very heavy, all of seven tons. Thanks to its 2,400 h.p. engine it had a considerable margin of excess power and its acceleration was phenomenal. It was pretty tricky to fly, but its performance more than made up for it: at 3,000 feet, at economical cruising on one third power (950 h.p.) with two 45-gallon auxiliary tanks, 310 m.p.h. on the clock, i.e. a true air speed of 320 m.p.h.; at fast cruising speed, at half power (1,425 h.p.) without auxiliary tanks, 350 m.p.h. on the clock, i.e. a true air speed of nearly 400 m.p.h.; Maximum speed straight and level with + 13 boost and 3,850 revs.: 430 m.p.h. on the clock, i.e. a true airspeed of 440 m.p.h.
In emergencies you could over-boost it up to nearly 3,000 h.p. and 4,000 revs., and the speed went up to 460 m.p.h. In a dive the Tempest was the only aircraft to reach, without interfering with its handling qualities to any marked extent, subsonic speeds, i.e. 550-600 m.p.h. "

So we are looking at at least 430 mph at critical alt, with a Sabre IIA. Deck speeds I have seen are about 370-398 mph (depending on the +7, +9 or +11 lbs boost figures) depending on serise and engine.

I have not seen any figures for a Sabre IIb, serise II Tempset running at +11 (or + 13 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif ), but with a few extra horses (20hp extra http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif) and clearance for higher boost and RPMs a IIB engine Tempest would move like nothing elses on the deck!

There is some really good transcripts of the Tempest performance testing here (http://www.spitfireperformance.com/tempest/temptest.html)

it has the look of a gunfighter, plane and simple.

the Jug has it...the Corsair has it...and the Tempest/Typhoon has it..

..Icefire likes this bird?...how could you tell? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

BtW - I'll wager tuppence and that 3 more people will post before Icefire does.

Love it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

(sorry for late reply, been out and about!)

Typhoon is great...not nearly as much of a fighter as the Tempest but a great bird in her own right. Too bad we'll never see it in this sim but the Tempest will fill the void http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

tempest and typhoon, are the most imposing and fearsome planes ive seen, and ive seen corsair, p47s etc, corsair when flying is pretty imposing.

if the typhoon was a warrier, it would use a great bit hammer, and smash ppl in teh face with it.

tempest would use a axe.

the spitfire is "nice", the seafire i posed with at FAA museum, to touch it felt really nice, that nice comforting feeling u get when a nice girl hugs u when u need a hug, like that.

mossie is abit like tempest surprisingly, perhaps like a elf from lord of the rings, subtle, yet extremely effective.

the two most negative ones where jumo engine up at wroughton, lots of negative energy around that, and v2 tail there too. i think its probably because they where made by slaves, didnt have that feeling with other things, from anywhere.

btw, the sabre's rating was aprently false, it was higher http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
they got a special one, without special fuel upto 5500hp for the heston racer http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
