Overview

On the 3rd April 1941, pro-Axis politician Rashid Ali El-Gailani, backed by four generals known as the 'Golden Square', seized power in Baghdad from the pro-British Regent Abdullah Illah.

Fleeing Baghdad, the Regent sought sanctuary at the Royal Air Force training station at Habbaniya, 50 miles west of the city. From there he was transferred to Basra where he took refuge in a British warship before being flown out to Transjordan.

RAF Habbaniya contained at that time only training units, including No.4 Flying School with a large complement of elderly Hawker Audax, Airspeed Oxford twin-engine trainers and Vickers Valentias and three Gloster Gladiators.

On the 30th of April following further deterioration of relations between Britain and Rashid Ali's government, Iraqi forces numbering some 9,000 men and 28 artillery units lie siege to the base.

On the 2nd of May, on orders from Air Vice Marshal H.G. Smart, Wellington bombers from 70 Squadron based at RAF Shaibah commenced bombing of Iraqi positions. Soon afterwards the Audaxes, Oxfords, Valentias and Gladiators of No.4 Flying Schools (now renamed the Habbaniya Air Striking Force) also attacked, their training aircraft having been modified to carry light bombs and Lewis guns.

The Battle of Habbaniya had begun!


About the Campaign

This is a relatively short campaign with just nine, narrative driven missions to complete. The campaign centres around the Hurricanes of 94 Squadron sent to Habbaniya from Egypt.

This campaign is based on historical events rather than claiming to be a historically accurate account of those events. The main reason for this is that the aircraft that are the main protagonists in the history, such as Valentias and Oxfords, are not present in IL2.

Playing through this campaign last night I was concerned that the first mission of this campaign is perhaps not quite as refined as it could be. The result is that it can be so hard to complete it that it might put people off doing the rest of the missions, which are a lot more fun.

The main problem is that the convoy you have to destroy is difficult to find in the rocky part of the desert and while you're busy looking for it you can easily by jumped by enemy fighters.

So here's a hint on how to complete it.

Take off from Lydda and fly along the coast until you reach the mouth of the river. Fly south down the river until just before it splits into two branches. Turn on a bearing of exactly 90 degrees and fly for about 30 seconds to a minute until you find the road running North-South on which the convoy is travelling. Maybe you will be lucky and your wingmen will spot the convoy and destroy it for you but this tends not to happen.

The convoy may shoot at you and give itself away, but you might have to look for it. It is likely to be on the road to the north of your position travelling towards you... but it could be to the south.

Once you see it, instruct your flight to attack all ground targets. You are unlikely to be able to destroy it on your own, although it can be done. Use bombs only if you can because you'll need your ammo later.

Once you get the 'Primary Target' complete message you're in good shape to engage the enemy fighters. Order everyone to regroup and stick with the Gladiators. Together you should have no trouble with the Vichy fighters.

Head south where you should spot Habbaniya airfield under attack from the surrounding ground units. Land at the base.

Mission Accomplished.

The campaign itself is fun, but historically it could be better for the the German markings are wrong. I know you said, it's not entirely historically, but skins can be changed.

Sonderkommando Junck (Fliegerführer Irak) was operating with Iraqi markings and the Bf110 (formerly 4./ZG 76) in particular had a distinctive camouflage with their sharkmouths and white noses.
They were based in Mossul, had inadequate fuel, no spare parts, no supply, no accurate maps, virtually no intel data... quite a desperate mission.

(Could be an interesting campaign scenario, too)

I'm really chuffed you are having fun with the campaign.

The great thing about this sim is that you constantly learn new things about the history of WWII.

If I were to expand on this I would definitely want to collaborate with other people like yourself, skin makers and more experienced mission makers to do a better job next time.

There's huge scope in this theatre for a big fully historical campaign possibly incorporating some of these missions. It could be very cool.

This is nice to see.

I've often thought of the Iraq scenario but the old desert map was unsuitable.

The new desert map works very well with this scenario, since (with a bit of imagination) Palestine, Transjordan, Iraq and Syria fit the geography quite nicely. Obviously the distances are much shorter than they should be, but the benefit of this is that you never have to fly very far to encounter the action.

Most of the missions in this campaign can be completed in less than half an hour... which is useful because some of them are quite hard at 'Realistic' settings and you'll probably have to fly them a couple of times to complete them.

So, if you can suspend your disbelief at being able to fly from Iraq to Palestine in about 15 minutes and overlook a few small flaws then you'll enjoy this campaign http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
