I found once task force and couldn't dive in time. There was one battleship. After re-loading (I started two days earlier) I observed at the same place three battleships (and much better weather). Just to test it next time was two battleships (each time different combination of types).
Have you observed the same ?
Is there the same random scenario for merchants ?

Perhaps you did not see the other two because of the weather?

Did you see them visually or get them on the Hydrophone?

(BTW Cool hobbies, I used to visit the castles in Germany when I was stationed there. Good Hiking up to the Castle mountains)

Sometimes they have random numbers of ships just like Convoys.

But also they can have some funny ship combinations. I just came across a convoy in January 1943 in BE9?

Anyway, it had 3 Nelson class Battleships in it. Unless I am mistaken there were only two of those ever created. They were Nelson and Rodney.

Out of all the times I have been close enough to actually see a taskforce, one didn't have a BB at all, two had two of them, and one had 3.

Out of all that I only ever sank on Nelson.

I think I came across the same convoy once...Let's see...The "Nelson" The "Rodney" and The "Huey" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I have the HMS Rodney in a box at home, waiting to be assembled, perhaps I should detail it as the mysterious HMS Huey!

Only "real" taskforce I've ever actually seen in 3 careers and over a year of playing didn't have a BB in it - just a Fiji-class light cruiser and 3 destroyers. I managed to sink the cruiser http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

All the other task force sighting reports I've seen have always been out of reach. I did lose my 2nd Kaleun when he stumbled upon what was labeled as a task force but was actually a couple of troop transports with a heavy destroyer escort. It was just after our invasion of France in May 1940, as the English were ferrying some reinforcements for the BEF across the channel to Belgium. Unfortunately something went wrong and I was spotted and sunk by the escorts before I could even get off a shot at the transports http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I saw all ships in task forces - sometimes I waited till the last moment because of bad weather)
Try to check it - it's funny to find all possible combination however you cannot expect 3 KGV or 3 Nelsons (3 battleships are mostly 2x Revenge + 1 x Nelson (or KGV)
I don't know how it works for shorter time of re-loading. My game re-loaded ca 2 days before task force came.

Have a look into ...\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Campaigns\Campaig n.

You'll find a Campaign_LND.mis used for landbased units, a Campaign_SCR.mis for scripted campaign units like freighters and a Campaign_RND.mis containing... well randomly created warships and hunter-killer-groups.
The game engine runs them all together.

If you open the RND.mis in the editor you'll recognize the warships and taskforces are set to spawn on certain percentage values. A taskforce is formed i.e. by 8 DD's, 2 BB's and 1 Carrier. The probabillity to spawn is set for every single ship seperatly to 30% or 50% or 100%. This causes the variable combination of ships.
They spawn, follow their waypoints, disappear and respawn (maybe!) 72 hours later and start their cruise again in different combination.

Edit: warships and freighters are both scripted and ranomized!

I don't like Revenge class BB's... those damned blisters make it hard to kill 'em.

I'm nearing the end of my first career (Jan 45) and I've never even seen a battleship once. I've never seen a task force either although I think there may be one close to where I am now. With only 1 fish left I think I'll pass on attacking it. I'm trying to make it home to Norway to get my nice shiny new XXI boat...if I can make it there.

I'm finishing my first career too, and i never came across a task force... the biggest thing that i assaulted was a 15 or 16 ships convoy: 3 warships and 12 cargos... (c2's, c3's, t3's and coastal merchants). Is there like a specific route for task forces, or is just a random (really RANDOM!!!) thing?? because i think it would be very cool to engage a task force in the middle of your career.

They have no special routes but they are occasionally in some places. It's very hard to find them. Random number of ships means quantity of ships in task force. Task forces sail from point to point exactly at the same time but their speed is terrible !

I suppose you're right about the speed marius. I remember the speed of the task forces in SH1, and they usually went at 20-25 knots... however, im still unable to find any task forces in SH3. Any recomendations on which places i should patrol to have a little chance of coming across a task force???

As MW suggested in the RND file there are various task force groups and one has a possibility of 1, 2 or 3 BBs with only one being 100%.
So if you replay the same thing 1 2 or 3 could show on the same replay
Task forces travel at high speeds and it requires very good luck to be in position to attack. They usually have a hoard of escorts which can be tough because they are high crew rated.
Those who think they would like to attack one are not playing a career where when you die you start with a new career. The risk is very high
I would suggest a long range luck needed shot to which you turn 90% so when the angry escorts come a calling you will be somewhere far from the fish tracks.
The new Seawolves Mediterranean will have many more task force in its add on which in the Med there were more. In beta testing that I attacked a couple BB task force but never in the regular RUB, Stock or GW versions have I attacked a BB task force. That in playing every day for over a year (only saw 2 BB ones in that time and 1 CV one)

Depends on whether you were inside their "bubble" or not. If the save was done with the task force relatively close the reload will have the same ships. If further away then the reload may change the composition.

I disagree that the task forces do not follow routes. I've identified a few routes.

In the course of nearly 300 patrols I've sunk over 25 battleships, some in harbors, most at sea (no externals, manual targeting). I've never read any thread that gives the locations, nor have I ever checked the files to see when and where they are, it's all been discovered by going out on patrol and finding them.

Some grids that I've had multiple task force encounters would include AM42, AM36, CJ75, CG95, CG43, BE38, BE66 among others.

I haven't kept it up to date on all my sightings, but I've listed many of these contacts here

http://forums.frugalsworld.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=86892

In one career alone (targeting only warships) I sank the following

Patrols=14
TonnageSunk=358009.000000
MerchantTotalTonnage=0.000000
WarshipsTotalTonnage=358009.000000
ShipsSunkNb=84
MerchantTotalShipsSunk=0
WarshipsTotalShipsSunk=84
PatrolCraftSunk=3
CorvetteSunk=1
FrigateSunk=2
DestroyerEscortSunk=4
DestroyerSunk=61
MineSweeperSunk=0
LightCruiserSunk=4
HeavyCruiserSunk=0
EscortCarrierSunk=2
AircraftCarrierSunk=1
BattleCruiserSunk=0
BattleShipSunk=5
MineLayingShipSunk=0
AuxiliaryCruiserSunk=1
PlanesDownNb=5

That's 5 battleships in the same career http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Read the reports here (warning, many images):

If I wanted to go out and sink a battleship and could go anywhere on the map I'd go to CJ75 south of Sardinia in the Med. It's like a battleship train route.
Good hunting.

Task forces have some routes (because you can find them at sea) but not like regular convoys.

Whermacht02 - my task force (first impression destroyer found me - finally that was guard of task force) :

Ystd evening in almost end of my partol I've found quite good task force (2 x Revenge, 1 x Nelson, J-Class x 3, Hunt x 1, V&W x 1). That was 16.07.41 - 09.28 local AN 15 (exactly 120 km west from Scapa Flow). I had in my VIIB last four torpedos (but 1 was stern). I didn't attack first Revenge. Waited till second one is on line - 1 electric and immy fired two others against last in row Nelson. All three exploded
- both battleships almost sink. Nelson got shot in bow and that part submerged. Then I turn quickly right and fired last stern torpedo to Revenge. After some min. Nelson sunken. Revange with 4 knots still alive. What to do - no more torps and bad weather wind 15 ?
I dediced to travel the same speed as Revange and wait for better wind to use gundeck.
Had to wait 5 or 6 hrs she finally went down ! Nice experience.

Wow mariuszj!!! Nice patrol there... Im still looking for the chance to encounter a task force... I heard some friends sying that theres is "certain" task force activity in the mediterranian. I think i will start a new career just to try that and do some patrols there. The day before yesterday i had my best patrol in one month... HUGE enemy convoy in AM 17 with only one escort (it was a V&W). Sunk him with a T2 at 1400mts. And then the rest was like a being on a shooting gallery!!. I was able to sunk 3 C2's and 1 T2 with torps. And since the the wind was only 5 mts/sec, i was able to send to the bottom 3 Smal Merchant and 3 Coastal Merchant with the deck gun. On the way back to the base, i was able to sunk another destroyer (i dont remember if it was a V&W or a Sommers), 1 more Coastal and another C2. Since by the time ir reached port it was 3:00 AM in the morning, i went to bed with the "Misison Accomplished" feeling!!!!!
