In flight, press Shift-Tab to bring up the console.

then type
fps START SHOW
Mind you: it's case sensitive!
press Shift-Tab to hide the console.

To stop and hide the counter:
fps STOP SHOW

Have Fun!

Don't know if this is 'easier' but I added the following commnads to the rcu file located in the IL-2 program directory.

The first line starts the FPS counter automaticaly when I start a mission. The other two lines create an alias, I just Shift-Tab and then type fps-on or fps-off to turn on and off the fps meter.

@fps START SHOW

@alias fps-on fps SHOW START
@alias fps-off fps SHOW STOP

If you want easy and to have a counter for all the games you play, get FRAPS.

Once you've typed in the commands into the console, the game will remember them.

All I have to do to start fps counter is:

Shift-Tab, up-arrow key (once- or twice- depending on whether I wish to start, or stop the counter), Enter

Then-

Shift-Tab

to exit.

Takes all of a second, and you don't have a background program running.
