View Full Version : The Waiting Game ...

Sometimes I think all we do is wait. Wait for the next patch, update, game, skin, campaign. We justifiably wonder what Ubi are up to.

I'm as guilty as the next one - always with 3 or 4 projects on the go that may be in the game several months down the line.

But I wonder if the waiting has become an end in itself? I've seen people on the forums write that they are sick of waiting and are off to other games!

I was fortunate enough to beta test the original IL-2, way back when. And I spent 6 months, all offline, shooting down the Messerschmitt G-2 in my LaGG-3 again and again and again (I said it was a beta!). Bit by bit, other planes were added, other maps, other nationalities. But right at the beginning we already had the best combat sim in the world!

I remember when the original purity of Dungeons and Dragons became corrupted by those with little imagination who turned it into a "collecting lead figures" game.

And we are at risk of doing something similar. How much time do we spend actually flying, practising, trying different things, tactics, techniques?

I spend perhaps half of my flying time in the QMB. Really. I set up a Messer G-6 at 150m in the Crimea vs a La-5FN ace. That's a hard fight. Then the same vs a P-39Q-1, then a Yak-9D with 50 fuel. That's a REALLY hard fight. Then I try a Messer G-14. At the other end of the scale, I try 8 Messers vs 12 bandits. Again and again.

I take up just 2 Spit 8's, me and an AI wingman. Then I try to get on his tail, knowing that he is programmed to stay on mine. I strafe a column of tanks in my Stuka D5 (QMB) and practise low level bombing with all the munitions of the IL-2.

I don't have mad skillz. I crash. I die. I collide. But I learn and I play and I have fun.

I wonder sometimes if we are losing sight of the learning and playing and having fun, replacing it with wishlists and deadlines and the "next great thing".

The next great thing will be great. So quit worrying, strap on a Tomahawk and go take on a pair of veteran Mc200's. You know you want to!

I hear that Ian!
And i'm like you.
I spent most of my time in the QMB.
It's so easy and fun, just hop in, set up a quick mission, then bam, you're in the game having fun.
I love this game, and i wish more people had more patience.

I quit playing the waiting game long long ago. There's no need to play that game when we have all we will ever need now, today. Then when something is released, I get the genuine excitement of opening a new gift and my expectations are low. One product of playing the waiting game is that your expectations get so high. Then when you finally get what you have been waiting for, 9 times out of 10 it will be a disappointment of some kind. Then what do we have around here. Thread after thread of complaints\whining. Learning how to stop playing the waiting will make your day when whatever is in the pipeline to be released actually is.

I've gotten a surprising amount of entertainment out of trying to trick the AI into acting properly for low level attacks in the SWPA.

(As an aside, I wish the parafrag loadouts for the A-20 and B-25 used the AI routine the Il2 uses for the PTAB (?) loadout. They'll dive in and drop those suckers at very low alt. Interestingly, the 2.5kg PTAB bomblet is really similar to the original 6lb parafrags the 5th AF used before they got the 23lb variety...)

I flew on Historia last night on the Normandy map.

Blew up some trucks and stuff, and had a great fight in my P47d agianst a Bf109 K4.

The game still rocks after all this time.

It seems kind of silly to stick around the forums of game you don't play, and honestly I think few people actually do that.

In regard to 4.06, 4.07, there's a lot of waiting, but I don't see any whining, just a sort of "what happened?", "what's going on" and a level of frustration brought on because there's no good reason for it. THe anticipating threads are a sign to me of how healthy this sim and 'community' is. Indifference and quiet boards are what we should be worried about.

I fly and enjoy the game and although I have other interests and very little time, I always come back to this one because it is definition of great in the epic sense. Even if I wish Oleg was a PTO nut, I can't control how he feels, and he still managed to give me the best PTO flight sim I ever played. It takes months for me to finish a long Dgen or DCG campaign not to mention the great enjoyment I get out of the free and paid add-ons like wings over jungles and ostfront.

I put a poll up a few weeks ago about the wait and the mods jumped on me like I was a terrorist..

Shinden1974,I think you hit the nail on the head!I couldn't agree more,Just as in every healthy family thier is going to be disagrements, fights& a little pushing & shoving,we're all individuals from different backgrounds with the common interast that we love this sim.

If one is more interested in waiting for the next big thing than enjoying what they have, they will never ever be happy.

The toy you have will always look shabby compared to the shiny notion of the new toy, and you'll end up miserable and poor.

Ouch! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif I know it's just a poll and most likely an honest one, but there are some on here who would take that opportunity to rant and moan about whatever makes them itch at the moment. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif
But like Ian says, there us much we can do to keep busy until the next release and the one after that and so on. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
I'm currently making some new Ki-61 Skins that should be better than my older ones I released long ago.
Also, I have one fully complete (and I mean complete) Russian Airfield on the Kuban map. I have a German airbase half way done on the same said map and will upload to Mission4today maybe.

I think what we could do is get the Mods off their butts http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif and coordinate something like a Weekly theme. Such as BoB week. This could be skins, airfields, missions and screenshots. Following week could be North Afrika then Pacific Carrier Action and so on.
I think this would keep everyone busy and make things more exciting around here. Not only that, but we all would benefit from others work and ideas for even more stuff to do. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Of course, just my opinion. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

LOL.. I thought I was the onl one who stilll did the bulk of his flying in the QMB.... Ian this is a great post, and yeah.. this product is absolutely great. I have never in all my days had so much fun from one thing... at least not one thing I bought in a store.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif
I am as excited about BoB as the next guy... but if it took another year.. I am, still having a ball with what we have every time I go up. This product sells itself. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

JadehawkII,
you just volunteered to think of something interesting like you said for next friday. PM me your idea no later than next Wed.
If it is good than we will use it. This web board is community driven, that means you and the guy posting next to you. If you have an idea or a suggestion PM a mod and let them know.

Great post Ian, sounds so much like what I do! Perhaps with a fair amount of UberDemon's Mission Builder as well.

FWIW, I (very) eagerly anticipate additions such as your own excellent work, but that doesn't mean I'm sitting around waiting and getting frustrated.

There's so much in the game I haven't done to keep me busy, like most of the campaigns I've collected in a fairly obsessive kind of way but not yet got round to playing.

One nagging thought I have is that when BoB comes along, will I close the book on the current series like I did in an instant with CFS2 when I first got Il2? All that time I'd spent collecting everything I could for CFS2 and I never used 90% of it.

Somehow I don't think so but even if I did, the current series has given me countless hours of excitement and fun (not to mention entertainment here at these forums http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

I have thought about that too.. but I dont think so..... I think with BoB it will bedifferent. IL2 was such a huge difference from CFS2..... I still remember my initial shock and the specialness of those first few months in IL2. It was an entirely new and different flight sim experience... the sounds were different.... the DMs were different... the AI was different.... even with the limitted planeset. With BoB and FB though I think that FB is strong enough to hold interest and the system requirements for BoB will still hinder the wholesale migration to BoB... there will be enough people still running FB to keep it going. I know I will fly both..... perhaps once the theaters begin to move east..... and the planesets become more diverse.... (I gotta have my pony.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif) I will go dedicated SoW... but until then Ill be enjoying both.

Good post Ian.

I do 95% of my flying online and I eagerly look forward to the next add-on. That doesn't for one second stop me from having a blast with the current iteration of this sim.

As stated by shinden1974, I get mildly frustrated with no real 'news' on something that was slated for release months prior and no explanation/placation all the while looking at the same announcement on the homepage for months on end, but that's just because I've been spoiled.

I guess I"m pretty lucky in that respect.
Purchased Pacific Fighters about a year ago and enjoyed the hec out of it.
Now I have the Complete Edition ,so all this is new to me,and having a total blast with it to!
I to enjoy QMB but head to HL a couple nights a week to get my weekly humble pie. lol
I can understand that people who have been flying this sim are ready for something new.
If I"m not mistaken a lot of guys have been flying IL2 for what 5 years now? Long time, but I still agree, still alot of life in this series.
I have to agree with some others in that the want for BOB is a sign of good health.
When they stop, that would be a bad sign.
Anyway,Enjoying the best flight sim on the planet!!
