View Full Version : Complete Newbie about to take to the skies

Finally got round to purchasing what I am told is the best flight sim (non jet) on the market currently.

I have the Cyborg X stick on its way (due tomorrow) so I am all set apart from 1 tiny hitch...I have never flown a sim before.

I have been browsing the forums and have picked up various little snippets of info (such as rudder required during take-offs) but was hoping that someone here would take the time to assist a complete newbie get into the air with some general pointers - I am a patient gamer who is happy to learn for a few hours before even attempting to shoot at something.

Really looking forward to my first taster!!

Ta, was just about to edit my post saying that I have found the Nuggets Guide...

Already confused by the versions but from what I read I have got all the latest bits by purchasing this: http://store.steampowered.com/app/15320/

Oh and anyone have thoughts on the Stick I have bought - not many reviews (hardly anything) on the Saitex Cyborg X out there?!???

Yes, 1946 is the latest version of the game. You should install the 4.08m patch though. Everybody's waiting on the official 4.09 patch, which is bound to come out soon.

Welcome to the forum.. and welcome to the sim. The Nugget's Guide should get you to the point where you can take it wherever you want to. Just be patient and persistent and you won't be sorry.

You've picked a good day to start: with the new patch (4.09m) just out, you will be flying the new planes at the same time as everyone else. You will still need to patch to 4.08 before you patch to 4.09m, and the 4.09 patch is huge (580 Mb or so!), so I hope you have a fast connection.

20meg, but I purchased through Steam who always take a few more days to release the patches (aka COD4)

Gives me a few days practice I suppose

If you have a 20 Mb 4.09 patch, it can only be the earlier beta, not the one out today - you can install the latest patch over either 4.08 or the beta though.

God luck with the practice, & don't get too frustrated in the first few hours - it takes a little time to get used to things like torque effects and some fairly sharp stalls in some aircraft, Try a Hurricane or the IL-2 itself if you are having problems, they are both fairly forgiving, except for a tendency to nose over if you brake hard on landing. Or try the P-38 - contra-rotating props eliminate most torque problems.

Go to the Quick mission Builder.Choose any pane you know or like - the Spitfire is a fairly handy mount for a beginner. The Hurricane is also benign but lacks speed and climb. I personally like the BF109e4 or 7B.

Anyway, then, in FRIENDLY flights, set up x4 of C-47s. These are large, slow, unarmed planes. Practice your shooting on them. I know it seems a bit unsporting to day the least, but for a start it is surprisingly hard to actually control the plane, let alone hit anything with it.
Hold fire until at least .5 on the little range icon. This means 500metres, still a very long distance to shoot from. Much better is to close in.

if you feelbad about shooting your own team, set up some enemy transports. If you choose the Ju52, watch out for the gunners. AI gunners are very good shots. You may even want to set the Ammo load to empty.

Finally, or should this be firstly?, download and install the very helpful Beginner's Campaign "Straight from the Farm". It's free, easy to install and is well designed to show you all the basics.

Practice, practice, practice. Get used to controlling your plane in the air first, then once you have that generally down, try flying against some enemy planes. Then try some takeoffs and landings...takeoffs are easy (though with the spin/wind/torque settings on, you have to know what to do to avoid driving around in circles on the airstrip) but landings are very tricky for the beginner and require a LOT of practice, but eventually it will become second nature.


I would recommend the Bf-109 for a total newbie. It's very forgiving and won't flip over if you pull back on the stick like a lot of planes (you'll see what I mean if you fly something like a Spitfire or Fw-190) and you can have Complex Engine Management on and not really have to worry about fiddling with the engine settings. If you have CEM off, a La-5 is a pretty great plane to learn to fly on too.

WOW! Thanks for all the info guys, very helpful.

My stick has arrived so I am about to take to the skies (hopefully) in the next few hours and will run through the nuggets guide step by step (which I have printed out - kudos to the author).

As I have downloaded the game via Steam I presume the updates are automatically installed - how can I check please?

For a new pilot I would too recommend the 109F4 or 109G2.

Also the Spitfire or La5.

Leave the Fw190, Tempest, P47 or P51 until you understand energy management.

Cntrl+E is bail out
Shift+F1 centers gunsight
Cntrl+D removes cover over gunsights
you need to assaign a key to chocks when you want to take off from carriers...anything else?

Well not all bad so far...

Take-offs are all sorted (from land based).

Quick missions I am shooting down plenty but with damage on I dont seem to last long even against rookies http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Now for a couple of questions...
Carrier Takeoffs - I end up in the drink everytime!
My procedure is;
Taillock on
Flaps 100%
Engine on
Throttle 100%
Chocks Away

I manage to keep it nice and straight using the rudder but as I cone to the end I fly for a few seconds and either flip left/right and end up in the drink. Not managed to work out where I am going wrong??

Hmmm what else was there...
Ah yes, what do you guys use to look around? I have a hat switch on my stick but it is very awkward to look around (using the mouse is a lot smoother). Is there a way to set my hat switch so it scrolls rather than locks to a view??

SOme aircraft carriers are too short for certain planes with certain loadouts to take off from.

Are you carrying any ordanance? Which plane and which carrier?

Dont try and pull up off the carrier, simply fly off the end as fast as you can, let the plane drop as you go off the end, and just pull up enough to miss the water.

Dont try and climb until you have enough speed.

Try and gain as much speed as possible in as short a run as possible.

With this method you dont need to climb at all until you are going fast just above the waves.

Watch how this guy doesnt climb until he is going fast. You can also drop down closer to the waves than he does if you need too. :-

There are a few different ways to look around.

One is to use the mouse but it's kind of tricky when you're flying.

There is a toggle button on the controls screen that lets you pan around using your hat instead of just switching from one view to another (can't remember what it's called off the top of my head). You can also use the padlock feature to lock your view on to other aircraft.

There is also a software utility called Newview that gives you more control over your hat switch to make it more intuitive. Here's a link.

Finally, once you've become completely addicted, there is a product called TrackIR that allows you to look around by turning your head. Very immersive.

F9 key does the scroll (pan view) vs lock (snap) view switch.

I don't use the hats on the joystick for looking. For some reason they are too cumbersome.

I use the numpad in snap view or my mouse. Can't wait to get Track IR . . .



This game is hard on realistic, so for a newbie (I still have alot to learn) keep trying. And lots of RL life flying and tactics do work here.

I like using the SBD for carrier practice, its the only plane I get consistently on / off. Still sir crash alot but . . .

I noticed somethings help

Carrier is steaming ahead (moving)

Rev the engine at 110 for a bit, use the chocks to hold then release.

flaps definitely set for take off. (on land you don't really need them).

What Xiolablu3 said is true, I kept stalling and / or losing airspeed trying to climb.

If you just fly off the carrier and pull on the stuck just barely enough to keep a slow descent from deck height, you'll hold long enough for airspeed to build up and allow gentle climbing pull the take off.

landing I found have to get the glide path into the carrier and flare up the nose so the tailhook will catch. Slow . . . On the SBD it is forgiving and easy to fly for this.

really helps to fly so you use the throttle to control your height, and your elevator (stick) to control your speed. Don't roll. Use rudders to keep centered. Also the IG (ingame) c landing videos mention aiming ahead as the carrier will move to that spot . . thats a good tip.
