Were the undersides of Shiden and Raiden light gray, or natural metal?

I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet a little of both.

according to Aero Detail No.26 , the Shiden-Kais had unpainted undersides , so bare duraluminium.

N1K2 Shiden-kai underside at Matsuyama fighter 343 kokutai (Japanese many 1945 fighter planes) generally not painted with any color, remained duralumin(nearly silver). Duralumin surface is dirty with soil, oil, fog, engine's and gun's gus etc.
Above are my understands from some plane magazines. regard.

Thanks for the replies all. My photos of the N1K2 at Smithsonian Annex showed a dull NMF, but I wanted to check for sure, as you can't trust restorations for 100% accuracy.
