Just getting my ducks in a row.

I'll be buying IL-Sturmovik in the next few weeks but I can't decide which one to get first.

I'm leaning toward Forgotten Battles and the Aces Expansion Pack.

Is this the best path to starting or do I need to buy the original IL-2 game?

Thanks
Hank

... but I did have F16 Falcon and F29 Fulcrum several years ago and i enjoyed them both. (I think those were from NOvalogic - XWife sold them at a garage sale ... $#%& @#$!!!)

Errrr Original IL2 is not compatible with Forgoteen Battles/Aces. If you want to "climbe the ladder of add-ons" FB/Ace/Pacific Fighters/... etc..
But welcome to the madness.

Get the all-inclusive '1946' DVD. Will be released very soon. Will contain FB/PF merged and all patches, plus a load of new stuff.

And yes, welcome to the madness.

O.k, what you need to do is hold on to your horses for about two weeks. By then IL2 1946 will have been released in Europe, it contains

IL2 Forgotten Battles
Aces Expansion Pack
Pacific Fighters
Pe2
Sturmoviks Over Manchuria
1946 Theoretical fantasy[/list]

I'm betting your American though so you'll have to purchase IL2 1946 through GoGamer in the states. Happy shopping.

In the meantime, the original Il-2 demo from 2001 is still available (there's two versions, I think the second version is the same as the first one but with more aircraft available.) Lots and lots and lots of stuff has been added and re-written in the last... five years? but some core things have stayed the same. I'd recommend you play with that in the meantime - things like the control assignments are still the same.

You can find it by googling 'Il-2 demo', I think - I don't know any specific site off the top of my head, but I saw a link earlier today. It might even still be available from the www.il2sturmovik.com (http://www.il2sturmovik.com) downloads page...

{For your information, here is a list of the history of Il-2:

Il-2 Sturmovik, the first game, followed by several free 'patches', many bringing new aircraft and other content.

----------------------

FB v1.00:
Forgotten Battles, a stand-alone simulation based on Il-2, with lots of new stuff added, lots of stuff reworked, a dynamic campaign etc.

Free patches for FB, many with more planes, going up to FB v1.22 IIRC.

FB v2.00:
Aces Expansion Pack, an addon for FB, mainly USAAF and Western Front Luftwaffe equipment IIRC.

More free patches, with more planes and tweaks.

FB v3.00 or v3.00m:
Pacific Fighters, bringing (obviously) the Pacific war. This can be installed as an addon to FB+AEP (v3.00m for 'merged install') or as a stand-alone sim (v3.00)

Even more free patches, up to v3.04(m)

Then patch v4.00m, featuring major replacement of the flight model code as a testbed for the next-gen Battle of Britain sim.

More free patches, up to v4.04m

v4.05m:
Pe-2, a payware addon originally only to be released in Russia, making 6 varients of the Pe-2/3 medium bomber flyable, and adding new ground objects. It is only available online, distributed by a program called BoontyBox, which (contrary to popular forum opinion) does NOT kill your dog and turn your PC to sawdust, just installs a couple of unnecessary spyware-esque files which can be replaced in two minutes if you can follow a simple set of instructions. Many people can't do that and haven't got v4.05m yet, so the community's slightly split at the moment.

That brings us up to November 2006.

Coming up next:

v4.06m
Sturmoviks over Manchuria, a payware addon featuring a dozen or so new aircraft used by Russia and Japan at the beginning and end of the war. Screenshots at www.rrgstudios.com (http://www.rrgstudios.com)

v4.07m
'46, the final addon, featuring 12 completely new flyable aircraft. This addon is a historical fantasy, imagining the war between the USSR and Germany continues into 1946, and features some rather interesting late-war aircraft ranging from the Ar234, which did see operational service in WW2, to the Heinkel Lerche, a VTOL design which never left the drawing boards, via the MiG-9, which was a prerunner to the MiG-15 of Korean War fame.

v4.08m
The final free patch, this will contain all the odds and ends which are more-or-less complete but haven't made it to release yet. Not much is known about it yet, it will contain maps for Norway and Burma, but the rest is unknown (to me at least).

---------

Note that the three final addons Pe-2, Sturmoviks over Manchuria, and '46, were originally only intended for Russian release, but thanks to the pleadings of the community (or the decision of the publishers, I don't know) they are also to be released in the rest of the world.

The "Il-2 Sturmovik 1946" DVD (not to be confused with the " '46 " addon) will contain all the content from Forgotten Battles to " '46 " on one (or two) DVDs. It is due to be released in Europe in two weeks or so, and there's no announcement of a US release yet. But www.gogamer.com (http://www.gogamer.com) are able to ship it to the US, and are working with another distributor to get it to Canada also.

Right, that's enough procrastinating - I need to do critical things now, chiefly to sleep and get up in time for lectures for a change...}

The "Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946" DVD will contain EVERYTHING since FB, including all the new addons and Pe-2.

The cost of the soon-to-be-released disc will not bo too high, I think it will cost about the same as the Pacific Fighters game did when that was released (or even less than that). You will get a lot for your money if you can just wait a few weeks.

Thanks Gentlemen,

You've enlightened me. I am patient and will wait for '46 and in the meantime I'll try out the demo.

best regards
