View Full Version : Time compressing (8x, 4x etc) and Autopilots + a campaign question

i have been playing the USSR fighter campaign for a while now (44 missions 102 kills) and i use the time compressor feature thing (8x time etc). i have almost full real, but i have discovered you can make it way much easier to hit if you turn down the time to 1/4 of normal. This gives you much more time to get a good shot, especially when you have little ammo and only use keyboard. Even if you have full real on you can do this. Imagine how easy it is for bombers to hit their targets when everything happens 1/4 of normal time! This is not realistick at all, and it makes it easy to kill many more than you would have without it (offcourse, i dont havent used this in my campaign, i wont do it in the future either, cus its Ô┬Ą%#% stupid) Making everything go faster, such as 8x and 4x is ok, I would even say its crucial for the game to work without boring the crap out of people. But 1/2x and 1/4x .. no. What do you guys think about it? I think it should have been some options in the difficulty section for this.

Autopilot- umh.. they couldnt have had such an feature in WW2? It can take off for you, it flys you to the next waypoint, it can guid you back if youre lost, it can even shoot down enemy planes for you!! I cant believe they could do this in 1942.

Btw, i shot down 7 BF109-F4 in one campaign mission yesterday, and i didnt get a medal! I have 5 medals and are polkovnik. What does it take to get another one?

FB is great in that it is so configurable, but in the end YOU must decide what you want to do, and play the game that way. Make believe and roleplay are possible without rigid rules. If you decide to never use time expansion/compression then that's OK. It's up to you! The developer cannot take all the decisions for you! If you want to make sure you don't use the time features by accident then just un-assign those keys in Controls!

autopilot is a bit of an exploit in campaign mode

because autopilot uses the AI flight model it does not heat the engine so using autopilot gets you into combat with a virtually unused engine which can give you quite an advantage over flying there yourself

No, but if you maybe are comparing your campaigns against other friends you can "cheat" with this. Uhh uuuhh uuhh i got 4543 kills uuh uuh . forget it. you dont understand

Hi again Bro

We've had some nice conversations before, but i think that you're take this game too seriously. What's the point in comparing your success with the one of your fellow pilots. I think that most of us pased the schools years a long ago, i really can't remember the time when my own fun resided in being faster or tougher than my neighbour, friend, cousin o whoever.

Bro please get back to the child we all carry inside us, if you're getting angry with my comments, maybe you're getting too old to play and should unplug yourself and use your time in more importants matters like politics or stock market.

Good flight to you !

Nonsense, I verified the joints twice!: This was the answer given by chief Mechanic Klaus Stoeffel to Oberst Lotar Von M├╝llenbrock when he complained about some strange vibrations in the wings of his Me-262 during take off. This picture show that Oberst Von M├╝llenbrock's fears were in fact quite real.

perhaps you would be happier if the difficulty settings included 'no autopilot' and 'no time compression'?

this way you could show your friends whether the kills you achieved were possibly making use of these two functions

i must say i agree with delta on this one

i find time compression and autopilot useful -basically to fly me to my target or into battle without getting bored( i use it 80% of the time) especially as some targets can be miles and miles away( i also used to use it by turning time compression down to 1/2 to help me learn gunnery skills)-

if you have an argument with a friend about who scored what and whether they were using Autopilot or turning the time compression down(and i sorta agree with jaegetev on this) then who cares? fly online against them and then you'll know who's better - you can't use either then.

If you don't like the auto pilot or the time thing DONT use
it i don't. I am playing the HE-111 campaign and i fly manually and i fly with normal time. sure it is boring but the bomber crews 60 years ago had to do it.

Hi jagaetev
Yes i see your point, but i didnt mean the first post "too seriously" I just wanted to hear what you guys meant about it. On the other hand, I dont understand with what you mean with these two statements-- they kindof say against each other in a way: "I think that most of us
- pased the schools years a long ago, i really can't
- remember the time when my own fun resided in being
- faster or tougher than my neighbour, friend, cousin
- o whoever."
and then you say "Bro please get back to the child we all carry inside us."
What do you mean? Why should i "get back to the child in me"? First you criticise me for being childish and competative, and then i should go back to the child inside me?
And i somewhat disagree in this: "i really can't
- remember the time when my own fun resided in being
- faster or tougher than my neighbour, friend, cousin
- o whoever." .. Why are you flying IL2? Dont you think its "fun" to shoot down your opponement?, .. would you be just as happy being nailed and shot down every time over and over again by either online or AI? "Its not fun being better than the AI, so I just let it destroy me"
I know theres a lot more to the game than just being better than everybody else, and im not somekindof macho ***** that always have to be the best/toughest/fastest.
But what do we have competitions for? What is the point with the olympic games and so on? I dont necesarly have to compare me with others, I can just as well be happy with what i have done myself, and i dont get angry if somebody is better at me at something, im happy for them and are willing to learn from em. And btw, im not angry with your comments and i hope you dont see this as an attack or something, i just want to clear up things

Many find the time slow down (1/2 & 1/4 speed) useful for setting up good screenshots. It's much easier to capture the angle you want if you can slow the action down. I think there'd be a huge outcry if they were removed altogether.

Perhaps if you were to suggest it in the ready room, making time variance a difficulty setting could be adopted in a later patch or future sim.

Hi againm Bro

Glad to receive news from you again, i think from your last sentence that you undertood me quite clear, as we all play this awesome game we use whatever is left from our child inside us, but from the moment that the adult part of us takes the control and we start to put competition before fun then we're getting too old too play this.

Behaving like a child and having fun doesn't requires to put away all the "wisdom" aquired soo hardly by each and everyone of us during our lives....ooopss....think i'm getting too serious i'd better get back to that excel spreadsheet i was doing before opening my forum drug of every morning...

BTW...cheers Bro it's always a pleasure to encounter old mates in new threads..

Another question here, i don't have a child yet nut i would like to know if any of you has already played online with his son or daughter (i'm sure we could find great stories in there,like..."hey dad i'll get that p39 out of your back if i get a raise in my pocket money"...)

Good flight to you !

If I have limited time to do a campaign mission, or if I have flown it successfully and the game crashed before I could apply the results I might use time acceleration to same time.

On the other hand I find formation flying to be anything but boring. In the I-16 campaign in Leningrad we cruise at 280kph, and my engine is in good condition when we start to fight. The only time I think it isn't fair is when the enemy shows up a couple thousand meters above us and my flight seems to hop on an elevator (like the ones in buildings). The only way to stay with them is to "cheat" by using autopilot. Normally I just accept it and climb on up as quickly as I can—my flight usually chase some planes down to me quickly enough anyway.

The 1/4 speed is also crucial for making movies. I wish they had a 1/8 or 1/16 speed, to help those making movies who don't have the fastest crates.

If you wish to compare campaign scores with someone else, just go on the honor system. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Mike
