View Full Version : Can engines be blown up if they're not warmed up or if you take off too fast?

I'm wondering because I've gotten into a few very rough-sounding K4 engines. I always takeoff like a gang buster. Should I do the takeoffs in a more realistic way?

The K4's I've flown since the patch are SLOW. Slower than any other 109 model.

G2 is still great.
G6AS Late is still great.

In real life this would be haapening for sure, but Since original Il2 appeared and then FB, and I'm playing them, never had any damage on that basis, In no plane...

How can you take off like gangbusters? The bloody throttle takes 10 secs for it to kick in ... this is NOT correct /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Err, no actually. If you compare the G6/AS to the K4 in terms of speed and climb rate you'll find that they are almost identical... although the K4 climbs a bit better, and when you get up above about 3000m the K4 pulls away like nothing else. No other 109s come close to the G6/AS or the K4 performance wise exept for turn rate. The only aircraft in the game that outclimb the K4 are various Fw190s. And THAT, my dear fellows, is the truth - not just some wacky oppinion of mine =)

And surely you refer to Dora, cuz I REALY doubt any A version could outclimb the K4.

Yes I was actually refering to the Dora, but as I remember it the A9 was an almost as good a climber as the D model(not level speed). It's just that we never conducted tests between the K4 and A9, just K4/Dora and A9/Dora.... so I'm not 100% there.

As for the engine going bad quickly, be sure to enable autoprop. Running at 100% prop pitch at takeoff will overrev and cause damage. Likewise, long periods of WEP can do damage as well.

engine temps must be above 40 prior to giving the juice or you are going to get a bad engine very quickly /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Easy! Just disengage the auto-prop, set the pitch to 100%, and GO GO GO!

yer - try flyin a VVS plane - no probs with bad engines there. Unless its a 153 or I-16.

Is this modeled? Really? If so then I wish it were more severe. I like to taxi. Even online and I just hate collisions w/ those jerks that insist on taking off in what ever direction they happen to be pointed in.

I have had this happen a few times I believe with the K4. The engine sounds a little rough and never really runs like it should. Maybe they did model something like that into it. I usually taxi so the plane is warmed up before any throttle is added and then I throttle up slow to full power. But the times I spawn start the engine and slam the throttle it seems to have a few more engine problems. Seems logical.

I used to have an English translated manual for the 109, and if memory serves, the recommendation was to set the RPM to 1000 for a minute or so, and allow the engine oil to come up to temperature before takeoff.

Please correct me if I'm wrong here.
