Spitfire IXs always seem to catch us no problem and they're 404 408 416 mph

Sure, but at which altitude, below 4000m they are a bit faster, your zone for outrunning a spitIX in-game should be above 5000m...

If you use the charts from IL-2 Compare for the latest version then you can see that the 109G-2 is definitely faster overall and maintains a slight speed advantage from about 4500m and up the IX is better below that by a little. Essentially the G-2 pulls ahead around the same height that the Spitfires second stage supercharger kicks in.

Regardless of this the speeds are so close that most of the time its going to be a matter of energy. Spitfires hold energy better than 109s in turning while 109s tend to hold energy in a zoom climb better so the natural advantage of the 109G-2 versus a Spitfire IX is to always maintain a height advantage and continue to defeat him with zoom climbs. Really this applies to any plane but when you compare the two you find two very closely matched planes so any slight advantage has to be used.

If either plane has energy advantage then they can run down the other. I doubt that either has the acceleration power to be able to get away from an opponent with slight energy advantage.

Its so close that if one pilot is trimming their plane better than the other that may make the slightest bit of difference to allow one to overtake the other.
