"The cockpit of the Vulcan B.2 was cramped and claustrophobic. The two pilots were squeezed onto an upper deck originally intended for one,and the three rear crew members sat elbow to elbow on a dark lower flight deck. The pilots had minimal windows to the front and small portholes to the side, all provided with screens to shield the crew´s eyes from nucelar flash during the ultimate high-level operational sortie.Once the wartime mission beacame low level in 1962,the Vulcan could not be flown blacked out,so one pilot´s screen was left open and he wore a patch over one eye.One flash-shift patch. Two flashes-hand over to the co-pilot.Four nucelar flashes could be absorbed before the pilots were out of eyes." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Couldn´t they just use one of those nucelar test shades?'

But that's not as fun as being temporarily blinded by several hundred megatons of power.
