anybody read THUNDERBOLT - THE P47 by Johnny Johnson and Martin Caidin? Im only on 6 chapter but what a book, I recommend to anyone, it has a blue cover with strange paint schemed P47. The man is a legend, the way he describes his experiences (thus far) is incredible, go buy it.

The way he describes his childhood in particular watching the planes is so nice to relate to, u can almost feel his emotions, and knowing his fate but reading about a time when he never knew it really berings the feelings alive

Yep, I read it a couple of years ago. Then I read it again a year and a half ago...so far http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Great book IMHO, but some people don't like Caidin's "facts". It was written with Robert S. Johnson, a member of the 56th Fighter Group. I highly recommend it.

He also wrote two others I would highly recommend. Samurai (with Saburo Sakai and Fred Saito) and Fork-Tailed Devil (the P-38). Both excellent reads.

I've been looking for that book in bookstores for years. I guess I'll have to get off my @ss and get it at Amazon.com.

Robert S. Johnson.

Enjoy the part about the Fw that failed?

Conversely, Robert S. always downed his victims:

Yeah, must be rough to have hydraulic fluid in your eyes (mixed with your own blood!) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Yeah the FW190 ran out of 20mm cannons so he was hitting Johnsons P-47D with the cowl mounted MG17 machine guns. The pilot fired his entire remaining loadout into the P-47, flew up beside waved, and flew off. He simply had no ammo left and those light machine guns weren't doing anything.

Actually it was less chivalrous than that.

2 or 3 times the 190 person came along side and gave the impression he was peeling off, only to come around again. And I will have to re-read again but I believe the last of some 20mm was expended into the Jug before the mg started flyin. Johnson certainly already had 20mm hits all around even before this clean-up man came along.

I would also highly recommend BLACK THURSDAY by Martin Caidin as well. It is about the Schweinfurt raid Oct 14,1943. I just finished it last week.
THUNDERBOLT is an excellent book, as is Samurai.
The two provide an interesting contrast between the two highly skilled fighter pilots.

We know who the pilot was that hosed Johnson. His name escapes me at the moment, but he was a well known, top Ace.

The P-47 was not scrapped. It was patched and flew again.

My Dad knew Johnson. He was a legend in the P-47 community. He was very very familiar with the story, long before Caidin's book came out I heard about it.

Johnson, like Sakai and Hartmann, were experts at maximizing what their plane did well and avoiding flying to its weaknesses. Johnson's description of his mock dogfight with a Spitfire is about the best description of a pilot utilizing his strengths I've ever read.

The Ace was Egon Mayer who shot Johnson up, and conversley this scenario is the subject of my next movie:

Should be on schedule...but turning into a bit of an epic.
