Well, I finally got a new computer, and since I got a fast one, with a the newest video card out, I thought I should try some good games and see what I've been missing all these years. Decided to buy a Saitek X45, and the salesguy said IL-2 was a great game as long as you had the patience to learn it.

Well, I have no patience, but I thought, what the heck! I picked up the game and my new stick.

Took a while to get the stick to work properly and get it set the way I wanted.

Then, when I finally did, I couldn't even complete the first USSR mission, which is "simply" land a plane without an engine. I figured easy. WRONG!

After much trial and error, and, after crashing 15 test planes (or maybe a few more), I landed it! What a rush!

This game is amazing... I can't believe the amount I've learned about flight dynamics over 5 days of playing. 10 days ago I was a passenger in my buddy's Diamondstar DA40-180 through the Rocky Mountains,I can certainly say I see how the game's models mimic what you actually experience in the air.

I've played some single missions but haven't yet earned my first kill... it'll probably be a month for that milestone http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Maybe more?

Anyway, what a great game... i figured that since it was two years old it wouldn't be worthy of my new fast machine... I was certianly wrong.

Hope to shoot some of you down in a dogfight a few months from now.........

Cheers!

Be sure you download the patchs 1.11 is the lastest patch version

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/games_elts/fb_updates.php

You need to download

IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles Patch 1.11
# DOWNLOAD THE 1.11 PATCH for FB 1.0 (out-of-the-box) - 45 MB.

You also should get Hyperlobby for online gaming from here
http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=2

over 500 players most weekends and 200-300 during the week compaired to ubisoftware that barely reach over 100 players on the weekend Hyperlobby is the place to play online.

PS Don't say FNEB here http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Welcome to the world of IL2. If you think landing was hard, wait till you start dogfighting online with the pros. As leadsplitter said, use hyperlobby. The ubisoft multiplayer is really unorganized and sloppy when compared to hyperlobby, and anyway HL gets way more people then ubisoft.

Hey, not bad for a salesguy.

Wellcome to the forgotten board.

Get on hyperlobby as soon as you can take off succesfully. It's like taking a dump. You really don't want those diapers on too long. The sooner you see others flush and learn to flush yourself the happier you will be. Take a lesson from the best dumpers in the game.

That's true if he is enjoying the game and not having any issues it must be IL-2 and not the 50 dollar patch FB. If you have IL-2 I encourage you to get a copy of FB so you can see how bad it is. Then if you want to fly online get a CD crack or buy FB cause thats what all the sheep did. It is lonely online flying IL-2.

Encouraging piracy RBJ_4?

You forgot to add that this is in your Humble opinion.

I have both and FB is superior by far.

Funny thing - FB ran fine from me right from the start, barring a few FM issues. Maybe the trouble's with the user, not the software?

On topic: Welcome DelgarX1 to this (mostly) great community and awesome game! If you indeed bought IL2, I recommend you go get Forgotten Battles. It's much better, and you'll be able to find more people to play online with.

The guy is new to flight sims so don't start telling him "buy FB right now" etc. Let them joy with IL2 so he can master flight.

As people posted, get the latest patch as long as posible. Despite some comments, you can still fly online with IL2, althought nowadays you can find a lot more people with FB.

Wellcome to flight simulation comunity!

Welcome.

Since you are playing the test-pilot campaign, its obvious that you have already patched the game.

Sorry about the other people here, they are very old and forgetfull.

Anyways, the 3rd mission needs tweaking. You'll want to open it up in the Full Mission Builder (FMB) and move your plane a bit. Don't worry, we've all had to do it, and it taught us enough about the mission builder to allow us to make missions (for when our ISP is not working or whatnot). You can find information about the FMB in various places, or by asking here.

Listen to trolls, just dont take them to heart. There are some very smart people who troll here just for fun. They often hide gems of information in thier posts, but some folks are so busy with thier agendas that they never notice the good stuff.

RBJ4 is correct: get IL2: Forgotten Battles when you are ready to play online, because thats what everyone is playing. Untill then, stick with IL2 because you don't want to overburden yourself with engine management, prop pitch, or odd-ball trim just yet. Cut your teeth on IL2 and move to FB when you feel comfortable with dogfighting.

Besides: the test-pilot campaign is one of the best. The german campaign in il2 is also excellent, AND there are plenty of downloadable goodies for IL2.

Enjoy, have fun, and ignore 92% of what you read here.

Welcome DelgarX1. You've entered a world you will not be allowed to leave! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Seriously, this is a fantastic sim and you're in with the right crowd.

Check out the Mudmovers links in a previous post. Tons-o-info there.

I assume you have IL-2 Sturmovick. It's great. I ran that for several months before moving to IL-2 Forgotten Battles.

There aren't alot of players online for IL-2, most are playing FB. Hyperlobby is the best place to go IMHO.

If you have technical questions visit the Tech Forum. In fact pay a visit to all the Forums. All are interesting and if you decide to tweak a mission via the Full Mission Builder, be sure to visit the Mission Builder Forum.

And...for questions concerning your X-45, here is a good place to visit:

http://www.saitekforum.com/forumdisplay.php?s=2304b3d27c2af76816f4fd94d8d5899 e&daysprune=30&forumid=75

It's the Saitek X-45 forum. Smart techs there to help with any questions/probs you might encounter.

Wow, thanks for the responses.

On the shelf were both IL2 and FB... the salesguy left before I made my decision to buy either so I just picked up IL2 thinking FB was a mission pack... oops... oh well, neither game was very expensive.

I have the game patched but haven't heard of hyperlobby until now... I think I'll go check it out right away.

I'll certainly be picking up FB on the weekend. The interface in IL2 could use a little work, hopefully FB is a little more intuitive.

Now I'm trying to land the experimental jet, and it is not easy!

The interface in FB isn´t really improved from il2, but in FB you can get to the arming screen for every plane in the QMB and set convergence, fuel etc. As well as record online, just assign a hotkey in the setup.

One of the most important things to make the game look good is too have landscape lighting on excellent. Needs stencilbuffer enabled in the fb setup or from within. And too have landscape detail on "perfect" needs 32-bit colour (but the game doesn´t suffer so much even if this is on low).

Hope you have some good hardware to run it maxed out. Although I manage quite well with that on a 1.2Ghz in simpler missions, it´s a bit underpowered in the long run. 512mb ram, or rather more, is good.

Well, after reading all that I just couldn't wait for the weekend, so I went to the local EB and picked up FB ($20 CDN, good deal). After an hour, I've discovered how important prop pitch is to taking off. I couldn't figure why I couldn't get off the ground at first.

On a 2.8GHZ, 800 MB FSB, 1 GiG Ram, Radeon 9800 pro, things are smooth, but chop up a bit at 4x time, at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out.

Cool game, I'm going to download hyperlobby now.

I guess I'll be fodder for you more experienced pilots!

At 4x it may not be "choppy" but just look that way due to the increased speed. I have a similar comp but with a GF4200 128 card (for now) and have now problems with this game/sim,

You will be addicted to Hyper lobby, its great fun even for those of us who are constantly shot down .. er I mean learning.

When where talking about higher resolutions, I heard from a person that the aircraft dot you see long before the plane actually takes shape, is visable at a greater range with lower res. Don´t know if this is true, I had mine on 1280x960 and got the advice to lower it too 1024x768 - can´t really verify yet if it helped. But it´s quite important to see this dot as early as possible, what you can´t see you can´t react on.

So??
