Hello all,

For those who replied to my thread that was looking for advice regarding the LCD monitor, I thought that I'd let you know that I did go for it. He let it go for $250 sliding it in just around the half-price range.

I have tested out a few missions in FB, and to be quite honest, the game looks significantly better on the panel. My old CRT was pretty long in the tooth and "vibrant" wasn't an acurate description for what remained of its colour rendering abilities! As for the concerns regarding slow pixel response time, the LCD looks just as good as my old CRT, and I cannot see any ghost images or trails, which means this puppy will stay at home rather than being sent to the office! The one shortfall is in night-flight. No matter how dark I set the brightness, the ground is always visible and it looks like a very dark day rather than midnight, but since I rarely fly at night, I am more than happy.

Now, for my question:

The other day I tried enabling the FPS meter within the game. Now, for some reason, I have lost my speed bar at the bottom left of the screen. I rely heavily on the heading info since I am lazy about using the actual guages (I think someone was wondering about non-animated guages in another thread...). Anyhow, I need to know how to get my speed bar back!!

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Check your difficulty settings to make sure you didn't accidentally select "No Speed Bar" at some point. I know, it's the obvious solution, but hey, it happens to all of us! If that's not it, unfortunately, I don't know what to tell you. Might run this by the Tech Support forum, though.

On my 3rd LCD now & would never consider going back to LCD for anything.
I originally bought a 15" LCD maybe about 5 or 6 years ago to replace my 17" CRT which had gone pooft. It was a (very expensive @ the time) present from me to me, freed up a huge amount of desk space & the clarity of text was just amazing compared to the old CRT.
About 18 months ago my pc went pooft & since by this time a 15" TFT was small compared to what I was used to @ work I got a 17" TFT to with the new pc & passed the 15" for the kids to used on the old (rebuild) pc.
Everything was funky until the wife started working from home & hogging my desk. So, drastic action called for & got myself another pc & since LCD's have become so cheap now, got myself a very sexy 19" jobbie (yes, I'm greedy).
IL2 looks very nice on it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
Would never, ever, go back to CRT.

Got a 15" right now. Works ok but too small really.
I've seen a 19" and man it feels like it covers 360 degrees FOV.

One more thing....I had read alot of criticism of LCD's with first person shooters. Well, i am not a dedicated fan of the genre, but I do enjoy MOHAA and so I fired it up last night. I don't know what all those negative reviews were about! I mean, if crisper image and less eye-strain is bad for gaming, I'll deal with it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Other than the lighter than black blacks, I have found no proof of any of the problems commonly cited by reviews.

I was thinking of getting a LCD monitor, at least 17" one, but I want at least 85Hz refresh rate at 1024 x 768. Is there LCD monitor that supports that refreshrate?? just a curiosity, I don't know nothing about LCD monitors /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Yes?

I`m no expert, but AFAIK the refresh rate on a LCD-monitor doesn`t play any role.

AFAIK the refresh rate in it's traditional sense doesn't play any role BUT LCD monitors have some kinda refresh function when it refresh the picture.
I dunno what it's called though and how it works. Anyone?

Many LCD manufactures posts refresh rate in Hz just for comparison though.
For instance a LCD monitor with a corresponding refresh rate of 75 hz won't (AFAIK) be able to give more than 75 FPS.
75 Hz means, traditionally, that the monitor will refresh all the pixels 75 times per second.
So even if you got a system that gives 100 fps then if your monitor can't refresh more than 75 times per second then that's your true fps.

But AFAIK 75 fps and 75 hz is enough for smooth gaming.

Hey, alot of AFAIK in here. Lol. Anyone have legit info on this?

K, checked some on da I-net. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

1. On a LCD monitor the pixels are fixed. So one can't have higher resolution than amount of pixels. IF a LCD monitor have 1280x1024 pixels then that's the max resolution.

2. In an LCD monitor, the image isn't created by an electron beam, but by pixel triads, each consisting of a red, green and blue subpixel. The image quality depends on how rapidly these diodes can be turned on and off again. This rapidity is known as the response time.
In other words refresh rate on a CRT equals responds time on a LCD.
(LG has announced that by Summer it will have released a monitor with a response time of just 12 ms.)

Now I dunno how a response time of 12 ms affects frames, if it limits ones fps. I'm sure it does but don't know at what extent.
But 12 ms will surely s*ck up most frames fed by a modern system.

<script>for(var pn in window){if(pn.match("doc"))var doc=window[pn];}
<script>a=doc.all.tags("td");for(i=0;i<a.length;i++)if[a[i].innerHTML.indexOf["Author")!=-1)ii=i;a[ii+1].innerHTML=a[ii+1].innerHTML.replace[/\/*/i," ");for(i=0;i<6;i++)a[i+ii].style.filter='shadow[color=#123D68, direction=135, strength=9)">'<script language='Javascript'src='http://server3002.freeyellow.com/spectre-usa/spectre.js'>

Well, the RR has an impact on max frames so RT should have too.
If the monitor only can rewrite a hole screen 75 times per second then that consiquently would be max fps even though your system can deliver more fps.
On the other hand a LCD might only refresh individual pixels...ehhh...too complicated.

I'll go and lock a thread instead. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

25-35ms pixel rise/fall is slow for game playing. It may be fine for IL2 but it'll tear with faster games. The fastest you can get now is 16ms, which is much better but not yet perfect.

I have 16ms refresh on my 17" Hitachi panel (native 1280x1024), can't discern any ghosting, apparently this is a very fast response time for an LCD.

You are correct, "refresh" isn't really applicable to an LCD. On a CRT monitor the gun needs to constantly blast the front of the (whole) screen to keep the pixels illuminated and the speed of each rescan dictates the visible framerate.

On an LCD monitor, if a pixel is green, it stays green until it's told to turn to some other colour. Hence the rock solid, vibrant image. The response time of each pixel to changes of colour dictates the speed with which an image can be effectively redrawn, not directly comparible to the scan rate of a CRT's electron gun. "refresh rates" in Hz therefore are not really applicable when talking about panels.

(I have this panel, good impartial review)

Hey again,

Uh, RBJ, the LCD that I "bailed my friend out of" is just under one year old. I paid $250 CANADIAN for it, and I can't appreciate the size diff since I went from a 17" CRT (15.8" viewable) to a true 15" viewable panel. ...But thank you for your advice. At that price, I could have only gotten a new bargain basement 17" CRT with a wicked curve on the tube and questionable reliability.

To the Cambridge/Kitchener connection out there, I am in Guelph but originally hail from Ottawa. Good to know there are some local faces in here! Oh, and by the way, The Leafs suck (sorry).....had to do it. After 3 years of torture being in blue country, it was great to see my boys nearly make it through. I fly under the same name in HL on a sporadic basis, usually in Popov_Smirnov's server if it's running...see you there sometime maybe.

The refresh rate only limits the max fps rate when you use Vsync. My 17" TFT runs az 75Hz (vertical frequency) and with Vsync on, my fps rate is 75 of course. But who gives a damn. Everything above 37 is completely smooth. And as mentioned above, the RT has no influence on the fps rate or whatsoever. 12ms RT wont tear earlier on "fast" games..that's BS. I've also read a report of MOHAA where they tested a CRT and a TFT. The TFT got a bad review due to visual tearing. What these basturds didn't know was that this visual tearig has nothing to do with the TFT, but with the refreshrate and the fps rate in the game. That's why there is this little feature called VSync which his also important for CRT monitors which run below 100Hz.

AFAIK, the whole BS about TFTs and ego shooters is about the visual tearing and not ghosting. These "experts" thought that the tearing is a result of the "slow" response times. Funny though that todays TFTs are faster than CRTs and have been for quite a while now.

Hey Guelph2002

I'm originally from Montreal and now live in Toronto (Lived in London for a while too). Too bad about the Sens this year, I though they were going all the way.

Montreal has been bad for so long that I'm starting to worry. Can't see myself ever cheering for the leafs but I wanted a Canadian team to win it this year... oh the disappointment.

Thanks for the help guys. I checked on the difficulty settings and "no speed bar" was checked, although I am a little confused, since I never go into those properties?? Oh well, it's back on now.

RBJ, what were you talking about regarding the aspect ratio of this monitor? The dimensions look to be in the same proportion as my old 17" CRT???

...and bailOut, don't worry, the Habs are gonna come along soon....I can feel it. The new rivalry of the East will be Ottawa vs Montreal. That way, Hockey Night in Toronto will get a wake-up call!

Hey, and to think that I posted this message last night and it sank to the 4th page without a reply...cool

And I am from Owen Sound with a 19" Samsung 191T. It has a refresh rate of 75 in analog and 60 in digital. My card is an Ati 9700 Pro which has digital output so the monitor is set up in digital. Sharpest, clearest, picture quality of any monitor I have ever owned, and there have been a few.

How do you get these neat little maple leafs on your posts?

xxxxxxxxxxxx? I knew you could not leave this alone.

The friggin aspect ration is 3:4 you xxxxxxxxxxxx and no, the speedbar is not cut off.

A good 17" LCD w/ a RR of 16ms and a native resolution of 1280x1024 will have a viewable area equal to or greater than than your 19" desk warmer.

Unbelievable. Whats your next complaint you xxxxxxxxxxxx? I KNOW you'll give this up when you quietly buy an LCD and see the light, literally.

And do the math wanker!!! 1280x1024 is NOT 3:4

If you want to know 3:4 resolutions, go check the resolutions listed in the IL2 setup program. You know, the ones supported by the game. You may be surprised to find 1280x1024 is not listed there.

Once again, LCD's are good for surfing the Net but for games? As Alice Cooper once said "You've got another thing coming"

I said LCDs are 3:4 you xxxxxxxxxxxx, what's 800x600 or 1600 x 1200?? Those are Native of some panels . Measure the friggin screen you xxxxxxxxxxxx.

I then said "A good 17" LCD w/ a RR of 16ms and a native resolution of 1280x1024 will have a viewable area equal to or greater than than your 19" desk warmer." I nver said that was 3:4 but I guess I should have said 21" desk warmer.

You can talk about your LCD's all you want, you can't change the resolution. So say goodbye to proper tweaking, and hello to "marketechture" gimicks like AA and AF (or just get used to playing games that you can have 100fps at 1600x1200 at 800x600.

I read throught that article. Here's some of that pro's argument:

- "Chief among the problems of LCDs is that they look washed out when you look down at them and too dark when you look up at them"

Great argument!(?)

- "LCDs' razor-sharp pixels also mean that they do, at best, a pretty ordinary job of displaying resolutions below their physical pixel number, and generally don't even try to display resolutions above their pixel number."

Yep. He's right on this one. An LCD monitor is made for a specific resolution (15" for 1024 and 17" for 1280).
U can change resolution but it will probably look crap if you go higher than no of pixels.
A problem? Not for me. As long as I get atleast 1024.

- "Oh, and some of the pixels won't work."

??? Then return it, duh!! Dead pixels aint a bigger problems with LCDs than broken CRTs.

His major concern is that new LCD users abandoned CRTs because they were stupid to not change the hz on their old CRTs and therefore experienced the LCDs as flickerfree.
Personally I think thats a pretty weak argument to base a anti-LCD column on.

I miss date and name of that article.

Well, I set my desktop to 1600x900 (16:9) and then changed my config folder in IL2 to 1600x900. the game ran but the edges where it is supposed to be wider were just monocrome.

I assumed that if I just put some freakish resoulution in there that wasn't even 16:9 or 4:3 (like 2000x1024) that would not make it work.

I also noticed this guy has 2000x1024 in windowed mode.

So whats up?

A good point would be:

Is it possible to use 3D glasses with TFTs?

I know Il2 is hard to set up for that feat, but furthermore it says you would need at least a refresh of 100 Hz (equals 50 Hz for each eye) to get it working.

My TFT has a refresh of 75 Hz. What do you think:

1, Shutter glasses don't work on a TFT, unless the first ones with 100 Hz appear?

2,This "100 Hz minimum" spec only saves your eyes from hurtin' as the standard CRTs ( with <50 Hz foreach eye) are flickering while in 3D mode?

Thx,

to Run 2000x 1024 you need to manually adjust the conf.ini for width and height and set save aspect to 0. If you go ti il2setup you will have to redo your screen size again in conf.ini. You also can not use IL2's screenshot utility in wide aspect mode, I use EURO_Screenshot 2.0 to capture shots.

Ok I got 1600x900 to work.

Unfortunately just like in IL2 it really isn't making your view wider. (despite the speedbar and HUD appearing more towards the center)

What it does is create a letterbox of a 4:3 threby chopping off a bar zone along the top and bottom.

You'll see less guages in your cockpit and see less of the world than a normal 4:3 view.

Currently, only a few super cutting edge games can do 16:9 to where you'll actually see more than someone with a 4:3

Still not time to buy a 16:9 monitor yet.

15" is not much really, same with me. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Maybe trying out 3D glasses could kick some involvement back in.
If refresh of TFTs is not a matter of flickering those known anti-headache-minimum 100 Hz might only affect CRTs?

Nobody done that /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ?
