What advandages are there in using Track IR? The POV movement is way too slow when in the heat of battle.

Your view turns with your head, just like in real life.

Situational Awareness is the major benefit.
The only other benefit is that it is AWESOME!!

PS: Have you watched the demo videos at www.NaturalPoint.com? (http://www.NaturalPoint.com?)

Instead of keeping your thumb on a hat switch, you just turn your head in the direction you want to see. For me, this is faster and far easier than using the hat switch.

On slower lower specced machines, as you get more and more objects in the air the FPS of the game drops but the trackIR response ALSO drops seemingly even faster.

If you are on a slow machine its best to use trackIr for better SA up to the point you get into serious combat then switch it off.

I find that it scares away unwanted door knockers when you forget to take the hat off and go and answer the door.

My home made hat with optional pingpong ball seems to draw attention and distract them so they seem to have an overwhelming desire to leave ......quickly http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Lol, answering the door is easy, you should try wearing it when you have to run out to the store. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

What is the advantage?
For me it's not SA, I had just as much SA when I used to look around with the mouse.
I'm of the opinion that there are 2 advantages, one is that it frees up my mouse hand to be used on a throttle and the other and bigger advantage is immersion.

As far as answering the door with my hat on ... check. I've also taken my dog out to do his thing with the hat on. I like to think the reflectors picked cars' headlights nicely.

Ok, what is meant by POV Yaw and Pitch? And why do other games support X,Y and Z and not Il-2 Sturmovik, and what does that mean?
I guess what I'm asking is, is TrackIR just like moving the mouse for viewing.. you are instead just moving your head.., or is it something different?
Thank you.

Big on imersion factor, but not advantages.. Oh, wait, I thought of one advantage, it frees up your HAT thumb to press other buttons, but other than that no advantage over other view control systems

The cockpits in Il-2 were built long before 6dof (xyz movement) became available, and UNFORTUNATELY cannot be fixed. You'd have the head movement you have in real life.

TrackIR is not just like mouse. It's a gigantic leap forward. With 6dof, it is the future.

I remember the first time I used it, within _minutes_, I improved out of sight.

The thing with TrackIR is that once you've tried it, the only question left is "how in hell could I so far live without it ?"
You don't ask yourself questions 'cause everything is NOW so "natural"

I cant fly without it now.

Immersion is the big thing for me. I can't say it's made me a better pilot. What it has done is that I simply don't even think about "views" anymore. If I want to look over my right shoulder I make the same motion as I would in real life. Scaled of course--it's not a 1:1 movement, but it uses the same muscles and just feels "natural".

It's also removed the feeling that I'm looking through a cardboard box at the world.

What advantages?

1. Immersion

2. It frees up a POV hat switch (for those that don't have a full-on HOTAS this could be big)

3. It makes looking about much more intuitive. Likewise, tracking both bandits AND friendlies is easier.

4. The hat looks cool.

5. Immersion

Thanks everyone. What's a good replacement keystrokes for the POV HAT? I'm thinking the trim, but what do you all think?

Ironically, I use the one direction of the HAT POV for re-centering the TrackIR - useful every once in a while.

Also use it for engine management - supercharger up and down.

Are any of you brave enough to show off your TIR hats?.....I'd love to see what they look like!

I use HOMAS http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That is, hands on mouse and stick.

I barely use my keyboard (I use it to turn on lights and such, and so start multiple engines).

I've never had a problem with views, or not having enough controls at once.

My stick has plenty of buttons, and I use the 8 way POV hat to control views - switch between externals, zoom, etc. The mouse is then free to do all of my looking.

I'm left handed, and I've always used the mouse with my right hand, so using the mouse and flying a stick at the same time are very natural for me, and I don't need a TIR. I believe it would add to my immersion though if I ever got one (which would only be if i went HOTAS, which I'll never do as I don't think there are any left-handed HOTAS setups).

Track IR, a good video card (better actually) and a good soundsystem (5.1 or 7.1) is all I need now. See what I mean below:

I play on a 70" Projection screen and I guess I'll still need rudder pedals at some point as well....................... the circle is "almost" complete!

LOL in the Bar room actually I just built in the garage and took the pics there. I've been meaning to post up "in action" pics on my clans website. I really do need that Track IR though......................

Track IR is the best thing to happen to flight sims since the joystick

Get the latest Pro version---works like a charm---flight sims demand its use, as someone wrote a few weeks ago, it is as necessary as the joystick for flight sims.

with regard to the hat question

i now use the up and down hat for changing the FOV .. pressing up gradually zooms in for shooting .. pressing down gradually steps wider for landing and SA

yah, ditto.

Shift-F1 is also mapped to hat, and C to jump to gunner.

It can be fixed, but they have other priorities now...like BOB!
I think they could have done one or two cockpits though just to give us something to play with!

CoD did that to me too... never had any problem with TIR. Some guy posted a while ago that it made him nauseous. Slow it down a bit, try everything in this: http://www.airwarfare.com/guides/tir_setup.htm , and focus on the planes outside the cockpit.

Yeah, this crossed my mind. You couldn't put it in a fighter, or it would have a massive advantage, but for the Pe-2, it would been a good sample for the BoB implementation.
