is there any chance that we could see canopys that open? most planes had them open on takeoff and landing for more visibility. this is something i always felt il2 and FB lacked

Yeah, that one gets my vote too.

All the best, Don

also, the ability to stick your head out, to see when the plane in front of you takes off.

Yeah, then when that's done people will complain that the sound of the wind whistling through your nose hairs is unrealistic.

Seriously, I'm not so sure our machines can handle the load needed to reproduce that kind of detail, Both outside and inside the cockpit.Just give me perfect settings with no drops and studders.

Bf 109: nope. canopy opens sideways
Fw 109: nope. airplane not permitted to fly with canopy open.

American and British planes: sure, why not

Russian planes: Open should be standard and close should be the optional position. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif did they ever bother to even CLOSE their canopies? Just look at any period photos.

Actually it's not that hard to reproduce. Battle of Britian had this, and was less graphically advanced. All it really did was to move the incockpit camera angle a foot to either side, so you could see around the nose. No model changes at all.

It was also GREAT for looking for planes below you, or atleast I think it was... been awhile since I played BoB.

Russians usually flew with their canopies open. They seemed to prefer the better visibility and the better chance of a quick escape (useful if facing the LW in 1941).

According to "Soviet Aircraft of the Second World War" by Gordon and Khazanov, flying with the cockpit canopy open reduced the top speed by 30 km/h (Mig 3). Similar loses might be expected for other a/c. Strangely, Oleg decided not to model this for Russian a/c in FB /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

It was the same for a lot of RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain. They feared being trapped in their cockpits and burning to death if shotdown.

Russian LA5 pilots usually flew with the canopy open because some exhaust fumes got in in the planes. In combat they had to have the canopy open because otherwise their head would hit the glass when they looked throught the gunsight. This was in a new magazine that portrays the LA series of aircraft in much detail. Check your bookshops/mag stalls. Cannot remember the name of the mag tho.

Control-E works pretty damn good! If you cant see down the runway when taxing, try curving left to right
