I have IL2 Sturmovik in Linux under WINE - make sure you run winecfg and that IL2 is run as Windows2000 mode.

Good Luck!

i don't have a win install to pull files from so i'm stuck at installation. securom nuttery for sure.

with /bin /lib directories in the game folder one has to wonder if the real version of this game might actually be non-windows http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi Baldie,
I'm no pro here, I have a bit of experience with Ubuntu but haven't tried IL2 under WINE (getting my x45 to work on Linux seemed too daunting a task to tackle) but you might have a look at these threads:

Hope this helps!

There is a discussion about securom and IL2 1946 on winehq.org - do a search for IL2 and look for the thread.

You'll somehow have to do something about securom, although from what I know several players had issues with performance and lots of different stuff thx to securom (on windows that is) so getting rid of it is anyway to be recommended. No experience but I think that the install from DVD will work - switching CDs during install did not (some versions back)...
so rts.dll or some other stuff is needed...

You can also install windows on vmware and copy the stuff then over to linux...

Rest is straightforward as said winecfg and windows version to win2k - that's about it.
There might be some wine versions with regressions but most of them work fine with IL-2...

About Saitek - I had issues running the stuff in Ubuntu Feisty - that version of kernel only recognized 16 buttons or something - so I downgraded to Edgy and it works just fine (I'll be more careful before next distro upgrade). A utility to consider is qjoypad for assigning keys and stuff...

Lobby is a bit more complicated...

@Ugly_Kid

Wow! Thanks so very much to you, CarbonFreeze, Pirschjaeger (who kick started me into Ubuntu) and all who have gone before to make Linux what it is today.

I have just been rewarded with IL2 actually firing up under wine.

Have only run one of my better landings .TRK file so far but can already see a speed and smoothness difference.

I've navigated a minefield getting the nVidia drivers to work and still can't figure why it won't run 32/24/8 for Perfect mode. SLI seems to be working but I can't find a simple applet (like nHancer) to see what's going on. I'll get there, if for one reason only == I have no further need to even boot into Windoze - bye bye, Mr Gates, it hasn't been pleasant knowing you... ;-)

Now off to try qjoypad, as so far my controllers just go doo-lally.

Thanks all once again for making an old-timer very happy. It has renewed my interest in computers - my interest in IL2 has never waned, though ;-) Please Mr Maddox - a truly native Linux compile? Please?

Very interested to get running under Linux. I have SUSE Linux on a dual boot. How does IL2 perform under Linux/ wine compared with on Windoze?
