Why is it that screenshots on the web seem to "look" better than what I get on my screen, even though I've got all the settings maxed? Is it just "grass is greener on the other side" syndrome, or is there something else?

Have you tried pressing 'P' for pause, 'delete' to zoom in and find a nice angle?

Sometimes its just a matter of perception...other times its that the shot has been edited in some way. Often I'll retouch a screen shot for colour.

Are you trying to ram your plane head first into the bomber? If not, then I don't see too much room for error :P

pilotpimpf
09-13-2008, 03:01 AM
If you mean me wag94 then no, you dive away under the B17, apply full throttle and climb away to circle round to attack again as the Sturm flights did in real life.
In this pass I managed to dive under the target and on climbing managed a few rounds into the aircraft following as well!

They found head on attacks the most successful for downing the bomber as pilot and co pilot where usualy taken out by such a pass.
It did prove costly to the less experienced pilots as the timing is critical.

Try it and see wag94, this is how it was done in realife.............. not plonkiing away on a heavily armed B17's six also this is one of the reasons for the later nose turret, its all in the books on the subject.
Research!

And now for something completely different, the old FW189 often surprised the fighters and even succeded in making kills some times.

Head on, side on, vertically downwards and straight up into the belly ... only way to fight a bomber.

I am always amused by the guys that park themselves 150 meters off the six of a bomber in something like a Hurricane and then complain on the forums that rifle caliber ammo is useless and the AI gunners are too good http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll post a couple tomorrow, but can I ask a favour?

As we have a High Res Screenshot thread, can this as has been asked, be for combat, but game only images, no composites or image edits?

I think looking at some of these images, and those that include mods, it would be good to keep them 'raw' and only from the game folder, apart from cropping the image only?

Some really cool moments in the thread already, cheers, MP.

Not a good argument unless his mouse weighs 40 lbs. and is subjected to 5+ Gs.

That the human gunners do as good as AI does not mean it's how it was in RL. Still an anti-immersion issue. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Second, I agree with you on not being like this in RL. Not because of +5G, or heavy mouse. But because of the vibration, turbulence, cold, fear from impacts. However, my oringial statement was "complainign about AI gunners". Most of the dummies think it's an AI overmodelling issue, but actually it is a human issue too due to the undermodelling of accuracy reduction factors .

It seems this sim never ceases to amaze me.

I was playing a USMC DGen campaign in Guatalcanal, in the Corsair. This is from the TruePacific DGen campaigns. This particular mission was a scramble, like most have been here, and it was just me and a wingman, with some USAAF fighters along for the ride. I wasn't doing so hot, having only shot down a Zeke and a Betty, and ran out of ammo trying to get another Zeke. So, I'm doing my best to get back to Henderson Field in one piece, and managed to land intact. As I came to a stop, I heard an explosion behind me. One of the Zekes got too low and crashed on the runway:

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n271/crucislancer/grab0001.jpg

Then I noticed his prop:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n271/crucislancer/grab0002.jpg

I don't think I've ever seen a prop go spinning like that after a crash or a big explosion. It was a wow moment for me, considering that it passed so close and landed in front of me!

There is no argument about AI gunners being to good, especially firing from the ball turrent of a wingless spinning plane.

However there is also the "not looking" issue.

When you point out to some of the newer players that there is no rule that says you have to sit there and get shot and you actually have plenty of time to just dodge a lot of the tracer coming at you from a distance, its not a laser beam, they look at you as if you just landed from another planet.

Bahh. that little program there is pure cheat, not like they had that kind of things in world war 2

either they guess how much more the TAS was compared to the IAS (like i do.)
Or they had a paper chart with the TAS of a given altitude and a given airspeed.

but thats just a personal opinion.

Enough of the Spits already. Lets return to the roots of the game. Original QMB Smolensk ground attack mission. It was fun to fly the Russian planes - hardly ever do. There's still about 17 more years of life left in this game for me.

More biplanes, did these screenies while testing a laminated Avia prop texture. Before anyone asks, no you cannot apply textures to the IL2 hangars I Photoshop-ed those billposters in later.

... I have called this series "David and Goliath", for obvious reasons ...

Taken last Saturday on FinskaViken1. Escorting 7 A20s, we took off from Seiskari and headed to Kotka via friendly islands Peninsaari and Lavansaari. Over Lavansaari, more than 60km from the target, a single Bf-109 appeared at 6500m and attacked. In the screenshot its already going down missing its tail and having its fuel tank on fire. You can see the A20s flying in the deck far below - the 109 fell from 5000m straight down next to the A20s. "WTH, some pieces falling down next to me!" as one of them put it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I took it a few seconds too late: just a moment ago there were more planes visible an the splashes from the 109's pieces.

hmmm ...

I think I am going to create a mission in FMB to see if ships can sink each other by ramming.

jolly_magpie
10-19-2008, 05:44 PM
They will certainly sink one another. Trying to make a convoy mission in FMB, if you don't watch relative speeds, or if you zig instead of zag they will easily collide and both will sink.

I also tried a sea battle, it takes 2 KGV's to take out Bismarck.

Never expected it would be that easy to shoot down four Russian bombers. After hitting the first one the pilot dropped his bombs and didn't realise the explosion would have such an impact on the other planes.
