View Full Version : Do you think the P39 is a difficult plane to kill?

I am playing the IL2 German pilot campaign and the P39 is one hell of a plane to bring down, just like the LA5FN.

What are your thoughts?

Stock P-39s (the one's America sent Russia) were armored pretty well, the Russians took off a lot of it to give it better performance. It really depends on the plane you're flying whether they're hard to kill.

For the 109 F-2, which you're probably using, it would indeed be pretty difficult, due to the lack of weak spots. Try aiming just for the wings, if you can. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I find the P-39 to be pretty fragile and fairly easy to bring down. The AI does seem to be more competent with certain planes, the P-39 among them IMHO.

On the campaign the other day when I flew a 109F4 a P39? came across my sight from the right and I pressed the triggers for second and the tail just blown of it.Hit the aread just after the engine. So I guess no AC it´s hard to kill if you find it´s weak spot.

Engine is in a nice vernerable spot. Easy to start it smoking, and once its smoking finishing him can be done at will.

Engine is in the rear. Get hits on it and it starts smoking. Can then get clear and leave it, until the liquid cooled Allison inline gives up the ghost. They are good down low and can roll like a 190. Not so good up high though.

My opinion is that it takes way too much damage to bring down.. usually when flying 109, P-39 takes sometimes up to 8 MK108 hits before bringing it down.. sounds ridiculous if only a couple of hits can bring down a heavy bomber.

I don't know about the armor, but that is one HELL of an armor.. Maybe the patch will fix it. Even the wings sustain 2-3 hits with MK108.. And one hit from P-39 cannon is enough to bring 109 down..and FW190s..

This makes P-39 one of the best planes in the game.. if she had more speed, she would be much better than LA5FN/La-7... luckily not /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

This is an interesting line of thought and as a P-39
" new guy" i've found that online the aircraft seems to be too fragile which I believe to be the fault of the sim design.

I have gotten to the point where I totally disregard the "fuel tank leak" warning since the weakest, glancing shot I take, from minor caliber weapons, seemingly anywhere on the aircraft causes a fuel tank leak. Which eventually leads of course to a fire. Meanwhile, the aircraft in my sights that I am knocking pieces off of flys on undisturbed.

Much of this may be my fault in so far as accuracy or ability is concerned but in FB my belief is that the p-39 is modeled as too fragile compared to other aircraft. Again just an opinion.

Real WWII experiences with the 39 that i have found in print varied and one cannot seem to find an agreed path of what the aircraft was really capable of.

I have been feeling somewhat victimized I suppose online lately so forgive me.

What Russian plane gets respect from you? Lagg? Mig? Something you can kill very easy I suppose?

No plane is hard to bring down with a Yak-9K.

I've taken many, many P-39's down with single hits.

However, I have seen an aircraft take two hits, on ocasion, like a Bf-109 . . . Took a hit in the rear fuselage without doing much damage except disabling his rudder and leaving a gaping hole (not all that much there to bring a plane down.) Second shell hit on the left side of his cockpit, right above where the wing is attached. Needless to say, the wing came off and the player died. To be expected from a 45mm cannon. I love going head on with people, if they are foolish enough to do so.

I just wait until they are .3-.2 kliks out and fire one shell.

I've gotten good enough at aiming that that shell can hit 2/3times, and once it does . . . . Burning engine, maybe dead pilot, engine is stopped, I've blown wings off, even once I blew a tail off in a head on . . . .even on P-39's.

It all depends on what you are flying and where you shoot.

edit: the P-39 is most definatly NOT a n00b plane.

If anyone tries the turn'n'burn or the pull'n'jerk standard n00b tactics, they will find themselves in an unrecoverable death spiral.

To fly the 39 well, you need skill, but once you are good at it, it becomes a wonderful aircraft. I saw posted a while back that, in real life, the aces loved the P-39 and the standard bad pilot hated it. There is a reason for that. The P-39 is only good in the hands of a veteran, no n00b could fly it well. So. Just because you get owned repeatedly by BETTER pilots flying P-39's . . . that doesn't make the 39 a n00b plane. It makes you a poor pilot.

I find p39 an easy kill. 2 seconds of firing with the D9's MGs and thick black smoke was comming out of that thing..didnt even use the 20mms yet. I did one more pass and that thing blew into flames.

I'm on the original version of the game and once I was lucky enough to bring down 2 P-39 in 3 seconds no joke, but I'll admit that I was incredibly lucky, that's how I got the Knight's Cross with Oak's Leaves and Crossed Swords.

The plane I was flying was a BF-109G-6/AS

P39 flown correctly is always one of the most dangerous VVS along with Yak3 and La5FN.

Though unlike those two ,if damaged, P39 is an easy victim.

One thing I don`t like about it.I can hit P39 in the nose with everything I got without a visible effect.IMO this calls for a separate DM.Maybe the nose could just be torn off like the tail.

The Japanese felt the P-39 was fragile. Not so much the structure, but from the rear-mounted engine.

Putting rounds into it from the 6:00 nearly always resulted in a coolant leak. A white vapor trail meant the plane was going down, even after minor hits.

That only counts for small arms fire, you kill it very quickly with cannon fire.

Hope it will be fixed with the first patch, just like the FW190 who also doesn't take damage with small arms fire.

In my limited experience flying LW planes - P-39 is the second easiest plane to kill just after the "Ransom Lighter" - MiG-3.
It starts burning almost immediately after the hit with any weapons heavier then small caliber machineguns. It used to be much harder to "kill" P-39 in IL-2.
