View Full Version : Up Close With the Shuttleworth Spitfire

On the 19th of July of 1995 I was visiting the Shuttleworth Collection. I was fortunate it was a slow, lazy day. They gave me complete access to their Spitfire L.F.VC. By complete access, I mean complete. They opened the cockpit door and said "get in if you want" and gave me a ladder for overhead shots. For several hours I was there with the Spit, and most of the time it was the two of us. I was amazed! Fortunately, I brought a huge amount of film just for photographing this Spitfire. To me, this was the greatest vintage plane shoot of all time. The airplane was oily, dinged, and looked like an aircraft which was in-service, not one of the surreally clean and polished air show types. I used every roll. Here's some of my favorite shots.

OK, just for you, Banger. This will take a little time. I understand it was repainted shortly after this so I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I happened to get to her while she was still looking warlike.

Beautiful, thanks mate!

It looks really hammered and rusted compared to some of the recent rebuilt Spits, a real antique!

Excellent pictures, thanks for sharing them.

It's all those little details that make up the whole, and seeing them there like that reveals the bittersweet nature of the beast.

That such a huge amount of work went into designing and manufacturing something that was to be deliberately put in harms way, sent out into a war, to destroy or be destroyed by other such machines...

Les.

*resists urge to lick the screen*

Cor! Very, very nice.
You have an eye for detail too. Sometimes photographs of preserved aircraft are taken like shots of a cow in a paddock. Too far back and not really personal enough. These are so tactile. Even at low res, you can almost reach out and touch them.

OK, I'll sponsor a Spitfire orgy. There are many more. I'll keep putting them up. You can never have too many detail views! This was a once in a lifetime chance to photograph every detail I ever wanted to photograph---I kid you not, I was taking multiple views of the small blisters on the cowling! I went hog wild. I also did a good shoot of the RAF Museum's Spit IX "supermodel" (the Spit IX out front which was made from casts of a real Spitfire---it is great for observing shape).

Thanks, I think the Shuttleworth Spitfire is nearest the wartime condition of the Spitfires flying today (it has got new paint nowadays).

OK, gents, prepare for a massive Spitfire assault. Achtung Spitfire! (Going through my RAF Museum files, too, for Spit phots).

A word of explanation: this was where the "Plessy Device" was located in wartime Spitfires ---under the red-doped fabric patch. It was a mortar which fired a flare. I assumed this was some kind of very high-powered distress signal.

Wow nice images! You should get a dSLR camera http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif that would make all this much easier then having to first develop the film and prints from those and then having to scan and edit those! Still nice images and a wonderfull machine!

And, here is the Super Airfix in front of the RAF Museum---the plastic casting of a real Spit IX. I photographed it on 17 July 1995 to get some details of the shapes of Spitfire IX.
