I live in Austin, TX and there arent any airforce bases to close to here. I htought my city was about to be bombed or something. haha
It was awsome

It was part of Muster Day at Camp Mabry, I was there. Head over there Sunday, still going on. Lots of Tanks & Nazi re-enactors too.

There's an airbase close to where I live, and I see (or rather, hear) F-18s every now and then.

Those guys must've been out of San Antonio. I graduated HS in San Antonio and finished college in Austin (HooKem!) and saw many flight patterns over Austin from the jet jocks in SA.

As I understand it, Kelly AFB is closed now, but there's always Randolph AFB as well as the guys going back to Lackland AFB for various reasons.

Definitely cool though.

I took a flight in an F-4 Phantom not too long ago. We did some low levels through some valleys and buzzed a few farm houses. I tried to imagine how loud it was for the farmers who were looking up and seeing us.

I was stationed at Eilson AFB, Alaska for 3 and 1/2 years. We had F-16s, A-10s, C-141s, KC-135s, and KC-10s. My dorm room was about 400 yards from the end of the runway. I live if I never hear or see one again /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I was an SP at Elmendorf AFB in the mid 80's. F-15's are loud, but not as loud as those dang B-1's.

Oh, and you Dallas guys, come up to the mid cities and you will indeed see F-16's flying around quite often. I guess they are all part of the homeland defense stuff, although I am not really sure where they take off from.

If you do come up to the mid cities, let me know.. I'll let you buy me lunch! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Cool. I had no idea there were so many Texans on these boards.

I too live in Austin and will try and check out Muster Day at Mabry. Still have my old Army ID.

A few years back, when I was going to UT, I would see Recon F-4's flying out of Bergstrum.

I remember seeing a C130 flying about 100 feet off the ground doing 90 degree banks and turns. Those transports can do some amazing things.

brtnstrns, Texas is absolutely littered with VR and IR routes (VFR and IFR low level routes), but for obvious reasons they're usually well away from any populated areas. That four-ship was most likely part of a flyby for a memorial or ball game (which could have been five miles from your house.) It is pretty cool though, huh? In pilot training we'd fly low level at 500' and thought we were Billy Bad*ss (the rest of the training units were at 1000' at the time) 'till a four ship of C-130's cruised under us at 300' or less one day.

Dolemite- and Supr, head out to NAS Ft. Worth (formerly Carswell AFB) to the Lockheed Martin plant. There's a Reserve unit of Vipers stationed there, too. I don't know what the restrictions are post 9/11, but you should still be able to watch the guys in the traffic pattern if you'd like. SFO's (Simulated Flame-Out approaches) are kind of neat to watch. They'll start about 8000 feet above the field, and spiral down through 270 deg. of turn in idle, with the gear and speed brakes out. It looks like a shuttle approach.

brtnstrns, rcjarrell, my wife's from Georgetown, but still refers to me as a "carpet-bagger" Texan. I went to the Austin airport recently, and sounded like the old codger I am... "We used to fly our T-38's up here from Randolph and park 'em right over there by the maintenance hangars." Things have really changed there in the past few years.

Around 1982, I saw an F-15 at an airshow at Ohakea Air Force Base, Volcanic Plateau, New Zealand. Unfortunately, it just sat on the tarmac and the guy guarding would'nt let this super keen 12 year old have a look in the cockpit (me). Probably for the best as the Russians might have wanted to have a few words with me afterwards. I get the impression it would have been quite a sight to see it fly. Suppose I'll have to make do with the images of an Aermacchi MB-339 trainer pulling turns and rolls over Himitangi Beach. Gee it was beautiful.

Oh by the way, we don't really have an airforce any more, well not strike aircraft any way.

I live in Norway, and see F-16's sometimes over where I live.

Just a few days ago I sat and played FB online with my headphones on. The sound was loud so I could not hear anything. Then in the middle of a dogfight I noticed my chair started to shake, then the floor and the joystick too. I lift my headphones off and hear a jet-engine, and runs out to see what it was. Then I see the low-flying F-16 on 200ft disappear in the horizon. Damn, I wish I saw it when it flew over...... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I live in NYC nothing here... BUT when I lived in Ukraine, we had jets, paratroopers everything any other day. I happen to live close to airport, and sometimes me and my friends dared to go the military airbase and see the jets take off.
