Some pics of an old East German Mig-21 from the grounds of Castle Guttenburg. The grounds on which this plane is rusting and falling apart is now part of a Golf club. The plane was bought by the eccentric owner of the Castle in the background and he's simply letting it rot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

these middle series (without the huge back) were always my favorites of the MiG-21 in shape.

i only wondered all times how bad they were armed.
-no internal canon (if they used a canon pod they cant use a droptank - very, very short range than)
-only two wingracks, means only two AA rockets or two bombs or two rocketlaunchers (it seems it has no sight to aim them ?!?! )

Beautiful aircraft - I hate to see any plane rusting away like that http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif However - I'd be sorely tempted to ebay some of those cockpit items http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

The 'Fishbed" was a key player for years in the 'Cold war in the air'. Definitely a shame to see it in that state with no current indication of it changing. Even if the current owner has/had no desire to refurbish it, I'm sure someone would. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

That is a shame to see that. I agree nice shape; it belongs in a museum somewhere. Not on a golf course. What purpose does that serve- the 19th hole?

How many Mig-21's were build? Over 8000? I'm sure there are still quite a few of flyable ones around, so we can let this one rot...
Saw rows of 19's and 21's at Saigon Airport in '93, only a handful looked flyable, rest seemed salvaged for parts to keep the few others flyable...

NO! Absolutely not. We must preserve as much as we can, because we don't know how long the others will last do we? The more the better.

This is the same mindset that people had when they demolished and scrapped hundreds of B-17's, P-47's, P-40's etc,... and used Hellcats for target drones by the hundreds in the 50's

The owner lives in this castle (Schloss Guttenburg) and is pretty eccentric. He likes to buy "junk" and just leave it rotting on his grounds.

Here are some more pictures of the junk he has lying around on his property. Two Mercedes-Benz "Kurzhauber" trucks, an old Setra bus next to a Caterpillar and even a statue of Lenin, probably from Eastern Germany or Eastern Europe. In one of the ruined buildings on his property, he also has a generator from the 1930s that provided power to a stadium here during the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany! He bought it and had it brought here.

Like I said, he buys junk. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Check this out.

When his wife had her birthday, he bought her a purple Jaguar XK8 Coupe. She didn't like the color.

What does the pissed off millionaire do?

He fills the interior with liquid cement and displays the car on his grounds. I have pictures of this somewhere. Let me see if I can dig them up. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You weren't kidding when you said eccentric!

I'd love to have an old jet in my backyard (well if I had a backyard that is)

There is one guy in South Australia, round the barossa valley area I think, that had an old Canberra in his backyard (well more of a field really) and some other old aircraft, I was so jealous as kid, even more so now! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

He has a sort of museum that you can visit when he feels like it.

I saw the inside of his house once. He threw a party for his then girlfriend (now wife). She was in her mid 20s and he was like approaching 40. Anyway, he's got all this modern furniture inside which just doesn't mix with the old surroundings of the castle. I mean, a purple sofa amidst a room which could have come straigt from King Arthur's Round Table Room.

Notice how the canopy was literally ripped off with a crowbar, and the complete instrument panel removed in one piece. All the wireing bundles to it are cut. Looks like the dude who raided it knew what he wanted.

The seats still there, that's whats holding the water, lap belts are visable in the water. If your going back, better grab the flight stick, may as well do your duty to preserve some of it.

It wasn't the old dude who trashed it, it was the thief.

He probably saved it from destruction, but has nowhere to put it indoors.

He should sell it soon before its totally destroyed, but it may be past saving now.

It looks very much like an F4 Phantom to me.

Something very sad about them killing machines. One day a tool of a violent regime, the other day a pile of metal rotting in the sun. They`ve seen the old WWII timers becoming this and now they`re sharing their fate.

Plenty of them still around though. Many road bars and inns bought them to lure the customers. Some have interiors some not. Most are well preserved though.
Heheh I remember not so long ago I was driving in vicinity of an airfield(Polish) and saw few of them in what looked to be a very good technical condition.Polsih airforce is SLOWLY switching to F16 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif but they have few of those still flying.

From time to time I go out to visit my local WWII museum.Has the Mig and plenty more stuff in good shape too. They`ve had IL2 and StuGIV for some time but they gave them away http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
