I am just wondering if anyone is playing another WWII combat flight sim than Il-2, FB and PF. If yes which one and why do you play it.

I started my combat flight sim carrer with MS CFS1 - the best of series I think, then used to play EAW (great game for its time), Janes WWII Fighters (also not bad) and Fighter Squadron, Screaming Demons over Europe before being fully attracked by Il-2.

Since then, I never fired up any other WWII combat flight sim and also do not see any reason to do.

But perhaps I am missing something I didn't know about.

What about you - are Il-2/FB/PF the only WWII combat flight sims you play?

I started with "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe", maybe not a true sim. but still enjoyable, It had a lovely campaign and pilot career mode.

Flown with Aces High since 2001 intil just now, but now its only IL2http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Dont think there are any other flight sims that can compare with IL2 at the moment.

Both Aces High and Warbirds and Air warriro was the ones that ruled the online sims this early millenium, but more detailed and damage models with more have past these guys now it seamshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The squad started flying CFS1 5 years ago, switched to CFS3 when it came out. Pacific Fighters was coming out so we wanted to give that a shot for the carriers, ran out and bought FB+AEP.

Im thinking that we really, really missed out for a couple years. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

I don't think there's any others worth playing except for Fb/AEP/PF. CFS3 comes to mind, but I haven't played it since IL2 came out.

Still have IL2 as well as FB ACE and PF on my machine, still haven't removed a huge CFS2 collection, occaisionally used (Australia/Nuiguini camp.). I may have a look at Target Rabaul but from what I can see so far it looks much less developed than PF....so far, but, semi-open may encourage many 3rd party A/C, who knows where it might go?

Easy BC.. .. there is one other one, B17 Flying Fortress "The Mighty 8th". And in 2006 it will be out again as B17 "The Legend Lives On". Bigger and better with multiplayer too. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I occasionally fire up EAW because it was the one that made me realise that CFS2 is ****. It's also the one that got me online for the first time and for it's age is an excellent sim. While I was not in the EAW community for long (IL2 Sturmovik had just been released) I know they've worked very hard and succesfully to keep their game as up to date as they can without re-writing the entire game engine from scratch. Any game that can attract that sort of devotion deserves respect no matter how old.

I occasionally fired up CFS2 because I missed carrier operations, but I don't think it will get much more action now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I've just recently found Rowan's Battle of Britain in the bargain bin for AUD$10 (about US$7) and I've heard so much about it I had to get it for a look, but it's been sitting on my desk not installed for nearly two weeks now.

Apart from the Il2 serial Rowans BoB is my second love. Does some things for me the Il2 series doesn't.
Also occasionally Red Baron with Hells Angels patch. It too does some things the IL series doesn't. A new state of the art ww1 sim is badly needed but no one listens.
I might give Mig Alley a look again. That one is still outstanding, apart from the graphics.

I have all the ones popular since 96 except CFS3 but only three are installed nowadays.

The IL2 series is probably the most polished combat sim, and has been since the start - although I seem to be getting shades of CFS2 with wingmen nose diving into the sea for no reason at all in Pacific Fighters that I bought earlier this week 30s-1min after takeoff. For me, as I play almost exclusively offline, the downside of IL2 is the (virtually) completely closed architecture means only things the developer is interested in make it in. CFS3 on the other hand has improved steadily since release and two add-ons in the works MAW (Mediterranean theatre) and Dawn Patrol (WW1) look set to raise the bar even further. That alone makes CFS3 well worth playing for me. However there are some flaws in CFS3 that are unsolvable without patches from Microsoft - which are now off the menu permanently of course. IMHO a CFS4 would be an exciting prospect with the same ideas and technology as CFS3 but with the problems fixed - sadly I can't see that happening.

There is however a very good sim out there which, despite not being a combat sim, can provide a WW2 experience - FS2004. There are a number of extremely detailed planes out there with all their systems modelled and with contemporary navigation tools such as sextants and scenery that makes IL2's look like something from the stone age. Unfortunately you can't shoot or bomb anything, but hey you can't have everything I guess :-(

Have fun

Hey Finn first post.... welcome aboard. I hear that FS 2004 is the best commercial sim available with all the addons. One thing that gets me about it though is that I see add on maps for like $39 US eac... a guy could go broke rying to get all the major airports of the world. I cant get past the combat stuff though....LOL. As far as I am concernedthis is all the same sim.. it is just one big 5 CD sim.... FB 3.0.

I used to play Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe. Great games!

I also tried out European Air War recently...very cool, but can't hold a candle to this game!

If it's got (virtual) wings, I've flown it.

I've played the entire CFS series, including the dreadfull CFS3. I've played European Air War, Aces of the Pacific, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and even the un-sim Secret Weapons over Normandy (fun arcadey game).

Also some of the un-noteables, like Jane's Attack Squadron (bad) and Rowan's Battle of Britain (VERY bad).

I absolutelly loved B-17: The Mighty 8th, and was my addiction before IL-2 came out.

The IL-2 series is the one that never leaves my hard-drive, along with Apache/Havoc+Comanche/Hokum, Achtung Spitfire and 12 O'Clock High.

First post bah! I've obviously not posted for so long it's forgotten them!

Aces of the Pacific and the original B17 were my favourites of the 'vintage' sims, although I never played Red Baron II/3D when it first came out and if I had that would have been top of my list I think. In fact it was going to a shop to buy B17 II that got me into flight sims again - it was delayed and I bought CFS2 instead.

It never ceases to amaze me how much variety there is in how people see the CFS series. Personally I think at their worst (I'm talking about all the games) they were/are appalling and at their best absolutely fantastic, as an offline player I would consider my favourite moments playing CFS (or FS) game as better than my favourite moments in the IL2 series (online I think IL2 beats CFS hands down though). To me IL2 sims are consistently excellent (within the same game I mean now) and never really ropey, it's a consistency that you don't find in any of the MS sims which adds a lot to their immersion. In the MS sims you can be having an amazing, realistic, experience one moment surrounded by fantastic graphics and then the whole thing falls apart the next.

Have fun
