Several severs request that skins download be turned off in the interests of keeping lag down. So...

1. Would there be a difference in lag between the default skins and a custom 512X512 skin?

And...I'm cleaning out my IL-2/FB Skins folder. I have both 1024X1024 and 512X512 skins.

2. Can I change the name of the file in IL-2/FB without affecting it's being properly displayed on the a/c?

(i.e. the default name is "Winter".bmp and dispalys "Winter" in the customisation screen. Can I change it to "Winter512".bmp and have it display "Winter512" on the screen AND display properly on the plane?)

If the answer to No. 1 is no, this would help me choose an appropriate skin to minimize lag.

Thanks in advance.

I am not completely sure of how the current net code revision handles skins, but....

1. A 512 skin does transfer faster, and under previous patch revisions, caused less lag.

2. Skins can be named anything, and they will still load fine. I have (or used to) my 512 size skins all marked so I could pick the small size skin in game.

Since I'm on dialup, I just disable skin download. AFAIK, this works on the client side, and prevents transfer of the skin, regardless of size, as well as prevents downloading of other skins.

in the pre-patch days, turning off skin download would not enable you to see other peoples skins, but they could still see yours if they had downloads on. one of the changes in the patch was that when skin downloads are off, you will not see anybody else's and they won't see yours. so if you do have a skin, a 512x512 will load faster if you have downloads on, but if you have them turned off, you might as well use the 1024x1024 as you will be the only one able to see it.
