Hi, I kinda-sorta have the same rig as you and use the STS3 compression and have found it to be helpful for me. I run all Excellent settings at 1024x768 with a 1.47ghz Athlon, GF2Ti, 768MB DDR, and Windows 2k (Also tried XP and it gave similar performance on the same settings). What I have also done, was to switch the filtering from Trilinear to Bilinear and this has also helped a bit.

You should probably mess with the settings a bit to find the right ones for you though.

Goodluck.

I've used trilinear and St3c compression since the beginning of IL2...works great for me.

I was using S3TC on my GF2, it gave me more frames for sure, but the background pics looked grainy and there were a few terrain issues with drawing surfaces and silvery panels on plane wings.

Now, this is just my experience on running this game with DX9, 43.45 drivers and the GF2 GTS. It may be related to my older vid card.

My current config consists of:

W98SE
DX9.0b
DETs 43.45
XP1700@XP2600(333)
512MB PC2700

I run 1024x768x32, 100Hz refresh, VSYNC ON, all excellent settings except ground and clouds at medium. For the BlackDeath track these are my results at the 2:30 mark:

FPS: 29 AVG: 30 MAX: 53 MIN: 15 Frame #5207

I get much better frame rates and no chop with it on. does look of lesser quality, but not that much.

Wiley, all that great footage that you make, and you and I have almost the same specs. I figured you had a supercomputer.

I use S3TC most of the time. Once in a while I turn it off for QMB dogfights on Perfect settings, but I've found that for normal gameplay, it is the best compromise between good looks and good performance. The only drawback is that once you have seen perfect you are spoiled for life.

I just reran the BlackDeath track with S3TC enabled. I saw those silvery wing panels on the IL2s and grainy-looking background pics and strange terrain textures.

My numbers did go up, but for me the graphics trade-off is not worth it when I get decent performance without it.

Black Death ~2:30 mark

FPS: 38 AVG: 35 MAX: 61 MIN: 19 Frame# 5107

S3TC gives me a big boost. I have to use it to get acceptable frame rate.

Other than slight discoloration in water texture, I don't notice any big diff.
