View Full Version : What Was Your Dumbest Mistake?

Today I made the stupidest mistake ever in this game. It is all the more galling as I am a veteran Kaleun.

Today, I took my new boat, U-61, a IXB, out on her first patrol, after having done 6 patrols in a IIA. We managed to attack two convoys, finally exhausting our torpedoes, after which a C3 had fallen out of the convoy, down by the stern making 3-4 knots. I waited patiently for the convoy to sail off. The plan was to surface later and finish her off with the nice, big 105mm deck gun.

Here's the mistake: When I surfaced and ordered the crew to the gun, it wasn't there! Grosser Dumbkopf, I forgot to add the deck gun at the options screen when I bought my new boat! That C3 sailed away, laughing all the way to England about the dumb Jerry who forgot to take his cannon to sea.

Surfacing my VII in '43 after the escorts had been sunk. Those merchants started packing purty mean guns towards the end of the war - got gutted by a Troop Carrier. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

My personal favorite was when I didn't pay any attention to my Depth to Keel when I crash dived... in shallow 40m waters!

I guess I'd have to say mine was sinking the American T3 Tanker (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/3431017653) when they were still neutral.

Mine would still have to be my little €˜fit of Romantic madness.€

Ever the true Hellenophile, I€ll not fire on any Greek flag (so long as I see the flag).
One not-so-fine day, cruising home leisurely having emptied most of my stores and munitions, and having completed my 24 in A.O, I picked up a contact.
Since I had no intention of engaging anyway, I used Free Cam to go through all the heavy fog to see who was out there.
Lo€ & behold a Greek Small Merchant. Fine.

I set up a course that would take me past the ship at a range of some 8 to 10 kms or so. With visibility in the fog being about 400 meters max, no problems expected.
After cruising along for a little more than an hour, I hear my watch call out €˜Ship spotted!€

I go up to the bridge to see. Hmmm€¦ Odd. Here€s that Greek Merchant.
Well, it just looked so familiar, so pleasant, so inspiring to see that beautiful blue & white flag slowly slipping into view through the heavy fog, I gave order to bring her about 5 degrees to port, with nothing in else in mind but to pass by her port broadside and give a friendly, smiling wave to captain and crew.

When we€d closed to about 300 meters or maybe a little less €" Bam! She opened up & hit the foredeck just ahead of the .88
Splash! Hit the water just across the bow landing starboard side.
Whump! Hit the bridge, now my head€s all woozy and vision is fuzzy slipping in and out of focus€¦
About the time I start shaking that off my brain finally wakes up!
I ordered crash dive to 50 meters and now we jump ahead flank, dive planes shift and the bow starts to come awash.
BAM! ..She hits the bow once more and holed it good.

Unbelievable€¦
Unbelievably stupid.

I wondered for quite some time who I was more furious with €" that terrified Greek crew, or myself.
In the end, the answer is indubitably €" myself.

Best,
~ C.

Hi
My personal one was whem I was pouding with the deck gun a small merchant and whem it fimaly blow up (it was full with explosives)and take with it a small tanker that was neutral and get credit for it because I early blow up there life boats so it was my DUMBEST MISTAKE http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I think my dumbest was definately slipping into Scapa Flow with a 12m/s wind and heavy fog and precipitation on the second day of the war. I couldnt see very far at all, and for some reason none of the destroyers guarding inside the harbour were moving - i suppose the weather was too rough for them to bother. As soon as my watch crew saw them, they also saw me. It seems as though their crews were at battle stations even though the ships were bedded down for the night, because i kept copping damage. eventually i spent about 4 hours RT in there, and not a single kill to show for it, just 40% hull integrity loss. it was ridiculously dumb of me to have continued on after my first couple of close calls.

Crashing into an island off of Malta. I knew it was there and was trying to skirt past it, when all of a sudden the amature navigator in my head told me then and there that it would be a great idea to check out Malta. Well I went with what sounded like a good idea at the time and set sail for Malta. I had totally forgoten about the island that was on my left just a minute ago. So after a couple of hours of having my men drag the boat off the island and repairing the bow, we set sail again. This time with a lesson learned that when near land use visual nav.. This way your crew might have some faith in their captain's abilities because mine sure dont.

I once plotted a course for leaving Lorient. Finally get out then go to 1024x compression when seconds later the game stops, I hear the water spraying sound and get reports of "taking damage sir." Turns out I beached it onto that small island west of Lorient. I never noticed it because I set the waypoints while I was zoomed out pretty far. 1 crewman died another was injured and my hull integrety was down to about 70%. Doh! As I play semi-iron man and all full realism except for free cam, I just kept going with the mission. It happened at night but I wish I could have seen how far the boat came out of the water when I hit land.

I shot a BB with two fish, one amidship and one astern. she when dead in the water and her escorts pounced. I manuvered close to her to hide from the Depth charges at about 50 meters deep.....and SHE SANK ON ME!!! I didnt even know it until I went to the external view. My mouth dropped open, total shock. I was at the dead screen before I even could think about a screen shot.

That wasn't really a mistake in my opinion... just bad luck and bad timing.

Good try though!

Some pretty humorous momentary lapses of reason. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Horvald,

Marvelous choice of image for an avatar €" not being Naval not withstanding.
I€m a long time admirer of Rommel, with good reason.

With your indulgence and in hope you take it in the good Spirit of the intent, it seems a shame to me that such a portrait should be stretched all out of whack like that, so I€ve re-sized and created a little avatar for you to use here if it please you. Actually two, and I offer both to your choice of either or neither.

http://idealhorizons.intuity.net/Horvald_Av_1a.jpg * http://idealhorizons.intuity.net/Horvald_Av_1b.jpg

All yours to do with as you will€¦

So, please Kaleun & all forgive my little OT meandering here.
As you were gentlemen €¦

Best,
~ C.

P.S. Edit *

After this page re-loaded following my post here, your Avatar image no-longer looks so stretched out as it did previously. Did you adjust it? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Maybe it was some anomaly with the page load initially.
In any event, I€ll leave this post, and you€re still welcome to either or neither€¦

Leaving time compression on and forgetting how close I was to the dock during my first patrol ever (I thought I had to park the sub). I ended up crashing into the side of the port and killing everyone.

I work 12 hour shifts at night, so I play when I get home in the morning. This just happened to me this morning:

My partol grid was in EE65. I sailed out of Lorient at 0430 for my LONG trip to my grid.

So I sat there in 1024X time compression, and waited.... waited... waited... then I woke up to find I was dead. Don't know how I died, but I was too tired to care and went to bed.

There's a mod called Wolfie's Tweek pack which allows you to customize time compression for different game events. I routinely am able to sail at 2048 and sometimes 4096.

I'm a big fan of saving every so often on those long hauls. Nothing as frustrating as spending 15 minutes to get to your patrol zone, the game crashes and you have to reset to your last in-port saved game and have to do that trek all over again.

There are many mistakes but I'll write only the dumbest ones.

There was one time I ordered crash dive in a area where the bottom was at 50 meters. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

One time just as I surfaced a plane was spotted I ordered attack with flak but forgotten that we were out of ammo and got killed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

Once I surfaced by mistake 500 meters away from a destroyer who was looking for me. Got killed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Oh and this is the best one: I crashed into a dock at the port as I was departing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

It was night and I found this lone small merchant chugging along in the distance. Not wanting to waste a torpedo on it, and since it's the beginning of the war and picking is somewhat easy, I manned the deck gun at "all ahead flank" speed and headed straight for it so I could catch up and get a good shot. So we're shooting and shooting and the merchant is taking hits, but not sinking yet. I decide to get in on the fun and take over the gun. I'm shooting away when I realize I'm going to crash right into it. I order "left full rudder" but it's not soon enough. I order "back emergency"! No good. BAWAANG!!! I plow right into it. My top notch crew keeps yelling that we're taking damage (Sir!). By now I'm up on the deck trying to guide us out of this stupidity and my deck gun guys start firing again. So now we're sliding along the side of the merchant (who is finally looking like it's going to sink) and my guys are still firing like there's nothing wrong here.

The merchant finally sank, and I got to learn how to man the "damage control" crew, and we fixed most of the stuff in short order. Now I pay a little more attention to what's going on when I do a surface attack. Duh... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

Well, here i was, expended all my torpedoes, sea is like glass. C3 spotted. so i surface, and run a parallel course... about 15 meters away from her. pound her with AP and HE shells. I dont know how that happened, but apparently she was carrying explosives that caught fire or something... guess what happened next

Uh I think i beat you all....

When I first got the game, I played the Illustrious single mission, after getting caught up wi the destroyers, I lost the carrier, I decided to try and use the hydrophone (for the first time) to find him....

I couldnt understand- for 5 minutes he sounded like he was behind me!!! then I realised I was following the sound of my OWN engine, like a cat chasing its tail.

**** good one that. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My worst is a combination.
I was trudging along on a mission, sinking left and right, most torpedoes gone. So I encountered a few Armed Trawlers, Fishing Boats and Tug Boats. Had a little fun with the gun a that is how it is supposed to be with such enemies.

Then a few hours later I get another contact. A V&W, gunning right for me at 5km. I think "Hey, I still have 40 or so AP shells(and some 30 HE). Lets have some real fun."
It goes rather well for me, I'm crossing his T so I make a harder target to lead and with my initial shell I take out B turret. "Nice, it is an even fight now" I think. But he simply wouldn't slow down or even show any sign og damage other than a few fires. I keep pounding him, but now his gun is getting hits in on me as well.
Furious I begin to lose concentration and my shells hit the water a good deal more eventhough the evil DD fills the entire sight... "The entire sight?!?!" I zoom out... **** he is nearly on top of me. "Ahead Flank! Hard to Port" But too late, he slams into me at more than 30 knots. I get twirled around like a toyboat while he steams ahead. Now I have even lost him as he passed behind me. I have to turn the gun all the way around to the other side. But I only manage to put in another shell as now his rear guns tear into me at point blank range.

Lesson learned?
DDs are not just souped up Corvettes.

My biggest mistake is to compress time when you
are going back to base. 2 times i was
sailing against a harbour wall. After that
i got the message that i was sunk.

So i am carefull with using the timecompressing
now.

I had dove earlier in the day to avoid herassing allied air patrols (this all takes place just out side the med) and decided to get a few crewmen a break. Trop, WO, hydro, radio, even my primary engineering crew (engine room) were all in theri bunks getting some well desirved sleep. I decided to surface figuring it would be alright, I forgot my hydrophone man was on break and I neglected to check the parascope. Low and behold to me I surfaced right smack in the middle of task force. I quickly sounded for crash dive and fired off my torp load at the carrier in front of me hoping to survie and get a nice kill (greedie me). Well the torpedos hit but because I did not get a chance to set them they were all side impacts. She was listing so badly no plane, or man for that matter could not of avoidind slipping of the side. By this time Her escorts came to see what all the comotion was about(2 CV, 5DD, and a smattering of corvets). There were so many depth charges you could not make out the individual detonations. I managed to get to parascope depth (after evadding the escorts) only to see that the carrier was stoped with a DD and one of the CV right next to it. (you know who some times two DD will both try to be in the same place at the same time and the result is they both sit there deciding who get s to go first) I though danm thats just perfect for a fore spread, danmit forgot to get the guys back up front to reload. By the time I reloaded they had made up their minds and were moving so I fired on the carrier limping along. Once again she did not sink in fact she was now level in the water though a lot lower over all (my two attacks were on both sided of the ship). Once again my greed got the better onf my and I was forced to play cat and mouse with the escorts (I have being the mouse). I kept going deeper to try and avoid the depth charges untill I went to deep (empty beer can). I guess it was not one big mistage but a whole series of little ones that happened all at once.

Once going out of Kiel I hit ahead slow, and pulled out of the U-Boat-pen. I then adjusted course slightly to avoid the wall, and then went to the map screen to start setting up my course. I got a bit carried away, and about the time I was planning my route around the top of Denmark, there was a crash as I hit the lighthouse on the break-wall. Of course, the change-course doesn't take effect until you right-click to exit the set-square tool (which I hadn't), so I ploughed into the wall. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
