Well Ive been here probably the best part of the decade now .When IS the 'anniversary' and what are we doing to commemorate it !?Anyway in the last month or so Ive been 'downsizing' my pc hardware .30 inch Dell monitor has been replaced with old 22 inch Samsung I gave my brother years ago.i2500k @4.8GHz -> e6550 @ 3.5GHz ...ATi 5970 -> X1950Pro 256Mb Windows 7 -> XP etc etc and dya know what I dont miss that uber hardware much at all...
I said it before and Im saying it again Il2 "LOOKS" 'best playable' on the ATi X1950Pro (ok so maybe it might look better still on an X1950XTX ) Sure at 2560x1600 the sun setting over the desert would bring a tear to your eye but you wouldnt see the enemy dots until their tracer was zippin by you .And we've all struggled with glitches eg buildings appearing in 'waves' as you fly over cities ,psychedelic water etc etc with 'newer cards'

So my selection based on heart and not head is

1 ATi X1950 Pro (paid under 20 euro!!!)
2 ATi 9800 Pro (paid 250 approx)
3 ATi X1900XT 256 (paid 100 approx)
4 ATi X1900XTX (paid 500 approx)

In my opinion a PC to play Il2 1946 at its best could be assembled with used parts for perhaps under 100 Euro//$ today ...

This thread will make you feel nostalgia

Wow... LMAO!!

When I started this I was running IL2 on an XP1600, 512M PC133 RAM, Radeon 9000 128, 17" CRT with a SB16 sound card.. that was the upgrade from a PII 233, 512 PC 100 RAM, a 64M GeForce card.. (Don't remember which one it was.. and the same SB 16 sound card). I upgraded in great expectation for CFS3 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif .. which I never could get to run right. I bought IL2 on a whim.. and the rest is history.

That was the first PC that I built myself completely from scratch.. and I have been building my own ever since.

Ha! really enjoyed those links! Nearly as much as I enjoyed telling my son how I used to wait about 6 full minutes for "ELITE" to load by cassette tape on my commodore 64! the first flight sim I ever had was "fighter pilot" also for the c64 which I never got to load at all!
It sure is great that you can enjoy IL2 on what is regarded as an average these days. I just played some co-op missions on the "mountains" map with the sun setting and it looked fabulous to me.

PII 500 with 96MB SD100, GF2mx (32MB I think), 15" CRT and a Creative Vibra 128 sound card when I started IL2. Can anyone spell slideshow? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It was the NVIDIA 7600 GT for me when I first started.

No issues at all just some stuttering that everyone seemed to get with tracers and smoke trails at certain times.

Hey there mate, I've been away from this game for over a year since my computer bit the dust and I've been rotting inside ever since. I'm eagerly anticipating forking out for a computer once Cliffs of Dover is all ironed out, but in the meantime how would you recommend going about buying a '46 worthy rig for 100 or 150 bucks? I'm not completely ******ed when it comes to computers and where/how to buy them but I'm pretty close. Thanks a lot if you guys can help!

Id recommend a local online general used goods website but Ebay is good too but can be pricier ...check out for items ending at non peak times...

PII 350, 192 MB PC100, Voodoo 3 3000, onboard sound, AOC 14" CRT - Il2 would load, but that was about all. Highly distorted graphics. Epic Fail.

Custom built:by pc shop flying Microsoft Flight simulator. Then I found the IL2 Demo and played barely on this.
Asus P2l97 mobo, PII 233 cpu, 128meg of sdram, 4 gig WD HD, Diamond Stealth 32meg AGP vid card Sound blaster 16

I was able to run the demo, with every thing turned down, within three months I upgraded, 5 times that size.

And built my own new system, and have never looked back, and only forward since then, on hardware, and simulation.
