I've just installed the origina Il-2....And it rocks. The sound is a lot better then that in FB/AEP or PF. FM is somehow different. The only thing I miss in old il is the dust after planes while flying low. And the ampaigns are just wonderfull. I copied the camps from original il into my merged FB/AEP/PF install and it workshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif nostalgy....

Interesting FI_Macca44,
I've always thought that first campaign in IL2 was excellent, how did you do it, what exactly is the process, copy what where?

open the original il-2 folder.Click Missions folder with your right mouse button, then copy. Paste it into your merged r fb folder. It will not overwrite anything. In the game choose career, ussr, and then you have Fighter and Bomber. In Germany you have fighter only. The descriptions begin with "on 22 ...." And as a static campaign it has this old debriefing screen - you know - stars as downed airplanes, points, awards. I love it, will probably play the old il though. I played 2 missions and everything works jus great. I patched the original Il with 1.1 a and 1.2 ov before copying the folder. Ahh, if you copy thge folder you will also get the original single missions from il-2 .I believe it is possible to copy the missions from the demo and even have the old demo in your AEP/PFhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I always load the old IL-2 campaigns whenever I reinstall the game after a new patch comes out. I play the old campaigns as a test for any patch changes, and the amazing thing is they have gotten better IMO with every patch.

For instance, in original IL-2 you have a mission in the German fighter campaign where you fly with the Romanians in the Stalingrad map. In old IL-2 the Romanians use the German speech pack (the default speech for the blue side), but once they got their own speech pack in AEP, you play that mission again and they speak in their native language this time. Plus the new Excellent mode water and new splashes introduced in PF patch 3.01 also show up in the old campaigns.

I've always used the original Il-2 single missions as a barometer of patch changes in FB/AEP/PF myself, particularly the MiG-3U mission, the 5 Bf-109 missions, and the 5 YaK-9 missions.

Since putting them into the FB format, I actually have a chance to complete/survive them on the first tries. The original Il-2 had overall harder FMs, although that doesn't mean that I agree it makes them more accurate.

I don't for a minute miss the real sniper AI gunners, or the super-powered Ace AI whose aircraft not only outperformed the RL aircraft, but seemed to suck 10-15% of your performance away once you got within 500m (even when the Ace was on your side) of them.

I do miss the immediate response to my trim adjustments and the sound, which still seems better than FB.

I never cared for the VVS Fighter Campaign (just when I got the 'hang' of a new fighter type, they'd make me fly a new one and it was too short, at 50 missions), but the German Fighter campaign wasn't bad at all.

If you can find it, you'll find that the 'Operation Barbarossa' campaign by Luthier is even better (the AI actually let you catch up to them, for one thing).

cheers

But the Il2 campaigns were static not "dynamic" Platypus - or is that what you were trying to say?

Yep, good stuff. I must admit to a certain amount of nostalgia when I crank the "original" up and was wondering how that campaign would stand up. Comments about the Rumanians in the Stalingrad mission would suggest very well. Just gor re-install IL2 now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
