well microsoft makes a really good FFB stick but if you're strapped for cash saitek makes a really good one also.

MS Sidewinder FFB2 is the best one out there IMO.

I would second that, mine is a couple of years old now and its still as strong as ever.

Hopefully that wasnt the kiss of death there, knowing my luck the stick will now spontanously combust or something /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I would third that. My MSFFB2 has been going strong for almost 2 years now.... The Saitek X45 is a good one too..unfortunately i am not on my home computer with the link to the refurbished X45 site ($39 for a $79 stick) The only thinfg with the saitek is it is ot FFB.

I'm on my second MSFF joystick. My first one (serial port ver 1)is still running strong (on one of my kid's pc's). I'm using the MSFF2 USB and have been for almost a year with no complaints...other than it's right-handed. But being a southpaw means I'm used to adapting. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanx for all the great feedback...ive been playing IL2 and FB for over a year offline,(yet to play online)and i use plain non ff side winder with no problems. I use sidewinder ff steering wheel for my nascar 2003 gameing and like it very much.Seems everyone thinks MS sideinder ff is the way to go...I would just like having throttle on my left side with extra buttons for gear flaps and ect. and not have to do all that on same controller on right and the thrustmaster breaks into 2 pieces. I was also pleased to see the IL2 game featured on the back of the thrustmaster box like this stick ws made for the game, but if this sticks not as good I will go with the Sidewinder.By the way ,I have assigned my racing pedals to the rudder and it works great! ivebeen reading forams for over a year and this is my first post..Who knows ,maybe I will be braveenough to fly online next!

I have an MSFFB2 and just love it. Combination of 24 functions on its 8 button configuration by using the profiling software. Plus, you can get a free replacement stick anytime. And I mean 'Anytime'

I mix my FFB2 with a CH Pro throttle and love them both, mapping the prop pitch to the FFB2's throttle slot is fantastic.

If you get the MSFFB ($79 at Best Buy as we speak) consider this.... http://store.yahoo.com/saitekusa/recprod.html I use the Saitek X45 as a throttle. I post this in every joystick thread i find..to some it may be getting old but i gotta say it is a SWEET setup!!! I use the MSFFB as my main flight stick, roll, pitch, weps, prop pitch and some views along with mixtuer & supercharger are on that stick. I ues the X45 stick only as a button bay and i have everything from lights to tip smoke on there. The X45 throttle has all my trims, some more views and my map, radiator and comms. Dont waste your money on that thrustmaster stick. Be patient..I hear they are back ordered..but get the X45 for $39 you cant go wrong. Great stick and it works fantastic with the MSFFDB.

"Logitech Wingman Strike Force 3d" I love it!

Cost $79 plus tax in retail stores. No longer being produced by Logitech nor being sold thru retail outlets. They Can be bought at compusa.com for that $79 price plus shipping, or at EBAY's Half.com "store" for $88 plus....

OR, I Recommend you "Win" one(EASY to do) for about $20-$21 on EBay, where there are currently 2 of these up on auction every Day, from some middle-man Company!! $20 plus$10 shipping cost=$35 total (These are "factory-recertified", whatever that means.)

I have just bought TWO..one for a friend, the other as a backup for my current one, JUST in case. i might even buy a third !!!

In my opinion, you simply MUST have a Force Feedback stick to fully enjoy IL2 and IL2:FB

I've got to second Bearcat99. I decided to try the setup like he has: Saitek x45 for the throttle, Microsoft FFB2 for stick and I've just added the CH pro-pedals for the rudder. I absolutely love the set-up. Like he has said many times they work very well together. I still have to get the hang of flying with pedals though.

Thanks for the advice Bearcat. (love your sig)

Okay I have a question,

Bearcat and Oudy: Which MSFFB stick are you using? The USB or the gameport.

I just ordered the Saitek HOTAS setup this morning and had no idea that it would function in tandem with a MS FFB stick -which I love by the way. I just want the programability of the Saitek setup. If I could get the programability of the Saitek throttle with a MSFFB stick I sould be in pig heaven.

Side note: I currently own an old CH Pro HOTAS setup with Pro Pedals, Pro Throttle and F16 Fighter stick. All of shich are programmable under Win 9X and below, but *not* under W2k or XP.

Question: Will my old fully working MSFFB gameport stick and/or old CH Pro Pedal gameport work with the Saitek at all?

Any info appreaciated. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That I cant honestly say since all my stuff is USB. I think I remember hearing somwhere that the gameport stuff wont work well in XP. I am using the MSFFB but the old one I had not the one with the red buttons... it still works fine in XP all you need are thelatest drivers from sidewinder. I actually use bothe the saitek and the Sidewinder software. The FB profile in the Saitek is part Saitek and part just programmed from the controls menu of FB. The sidewinder profile has all the weps keys assigned and mixture & supercharger. It works for me... I just have to improve my skills thats all but th whoe expeience is extremely immersive.

Get the #1 selling FFB stick in North America, the Microsoft Force Feedback 2.

As an online ace I highly recommend it. You'll need a CH Pro Throttle to go with it too though (in order to be an ace in FB with it's new gizmo requirements)

The Saitek X45 stick is USB..at least mine is. There is one USB connector. That is on the stick and the throttle connects into the stick. However it all shows up as one controller so say if you have my setup and you look into the game controller menu of XP you will see the FFB2, CH Pedals and the X45. I have no conflicts at all and $39 is the best you will pay for a throttle quadrant and a button bay I can gaurantee that.

All of my components are USB. I also use the Dhauzimmer drivers for my Saitek X45. I can use all the dials and buttons on my throttle through the programming. The only commands I had to reprogram were the ones I used with the pinky switch since I didn't want to have to move my hand off my Microsoft Force Feedback stick.

Yes, Bearcat it is wonderful to have all of the commands I need at the tip of my fingers rather than on the keyboard. Oh, by the way I am also using TrackIR. Consequently, I am using 4 USB slots...keep that in mind.

Having this setup has definitely made flying more enjoyable and immersive. I'm probably a better pilot, but I am by no means an "Ace". In fact, I've only been online once. Almost all of my flying has been offline.

Thanks Oudy,

I was afraid that you and Bearcat would say that. I have hundreds of dollars invested in perfectly good gameport based HOTAS and FFB gear that doesn't want to fly under W2K/XP.

I'm hoping that at least my gameport pedals will work with the Sitek HOTAS so that I wount have to go out and replace perfectly good pedals. Argh...

What is your opinion of the Saitek rudder rocker doo-hickey?

The Saitek rudder is positioned below the throttle where your fingers curl around. It works...but I've never really been able to use it effectively. It's in an awkward position for my hand and I can't hold it steady for any length of time. No matter how I adjusted the sensitivity It still was too bouncy to use. I went without much rudder control until I got the rudder pedals. Now, I'm relearning how to fly again.

The upside is that I now have the rudder control free to program for some other command (though I haven't figured out what yet).

You can find Microsoft FF2 on Pricegrabber.com for $56.92.
There is also a $20.00 rebate until June 30 - be sure to read all the fine print to make sure you will qualify.

WOW....that means you cna get a great HOTAS setup AND FFB for a mere $75.....

Hey Oudy..since you have the pedals why not program your rudder trim to that rocker arm? I have my elevator trim on the knob facing me, aileron trim on the one facing out and rudder trim on the rocker. Trim helps in course correcting , lineing up shots, and getting over the top of tight turns. I had TIR but i sent it back I use the orange mouse button on the X45...works great for me and frees my head..LOL.. I have the black button on the throttlwe tied to the keyboard button I use for RW. I still have barely scratched the surface in the X45... I use the two hats on the stick as four way switches. The right one is all gear, manual raise, manual lower and tailwheel lock. The left one is all lights, nav, cockpit, landing and tip smoke. That is only in one mode though. I am thinking of tryiong to see if i could put my rudder trim on the MSFFB stick just to see if it will work. That way if aperson doesnt have pedals they can STILL use rudder and trim in a manner that is useful. I never could get the hang of using certain things on the keyboard. It was too distracting. The red button on the X45 is for my bail out. I have my engine start on the little red button in front. All my wepa are on the MS stick, bombs, missles , cannon and MGs...
Overal I am tickled with my setup. I fly off line aot too. We do alot of coops in the 99th. I enjoy DF servers sometimes but I prefer having a goal and working towards it than just flying around trying to avoid being hit by some guy in a Yak or a Hurricane.

I like the idea of rudder trim on the rocker. That's what I was thinking about doing. I'm using the rotary switch 2 for my prop pitch, and rotary switch 1 for elevator. I tried rotary switch 2 for the ailerons but didn't like it. It was too sensitive. I have all the commands I use programmed into the sticks, so I don't have to take my hands off them.

Now, if I can get the brakes on the pedals to work I'll be like a pig in slop.

I'm a fan of the Saitek Force FF stick, but then again being left handed my options are limited.

I put my prop pitch on the throttle slider of my MS stick!! works great..a lever just like on the real planes, The brakes are easy or they should be..just go to the HOTAS section of the FB controls menu. Highlight the brakes part in the right hand column... then hit your brakes and it should say something like Y -Axis- ID2 or something like that. I only use aileron trim for flying. Course corrections and such. You just have to turn it slightly.

Bearcat and others...I have been using my x45 for a few months now. Love-it. Little awkward shaped stick, but still highly functional. The best part is the programming software. I just create an entire profile for each sim I have and map similiarly to each one. But, you have to program in the M1, M2, and M3 modes. I use M1 to cruise and fight, M2 to bomb, and M3 to take-off and land. I can map the entire relevant keys to every switch and hat I have!
If you have the throttle it would still be programmable through the software by using the gameport, but xp does have gameport issues.

check out tech forums for logitech and mffb all the people who have problems with them engines burning out controller not calibrating properly might make you think twice about a ffb stick unless you like to get a new one every couple months

Precisely why I think this stick is so great. Add to that ANOTHER stick and your possibilities are endless. BTW dvkillar you do realize that there are 3 more modes you can work out.....M-1 + pinkie, M-2 +..., & M-3 +... so that actually makes 6 modes you can have assigned on that one stick. right now I dont even use the full programming power of the stick because I havent taken the time to work it out. I may do that this weekend. My set up is mixed between the FB cntrls menu and the programmong software.
