View Full Version : Tactical Opininion needed- massive convoy

I'm at the northern channel, just west of AM51. I contact an emormous convoy and it has 4 T3s 2 Troopers, and various other large merchantmen. I am in Dec 1943 with type IXD boat with schnorkel. The problem is in the intercept. The water is only 43 meters deep, This convoy has 6 escorts and various picket sentries sailing to and fro. I have spotted a deep hole just north of where the channel narrows but cannot make enough speed submerged to make it unless I use schnorkel. I keep getting intercepted by the patrol DD's and aircraft when on schnorkel. I have set the schnorkel as close to surface as possible to try an avoid being detected (put the boat at 15 meters)-No joy, they are obviously detecting me by radar. I have sunk 3 escorts so far and still have one 2 pinging me. In water this shallow, I cannot afford to go allstop and let the pickets go by because the convoy is steaming and it puts me behind. So tactically speaking how would approach this scenario? Maybe go ahead and intercept at shallow depth? Disengage and try to get through the narrow part of the channel and reacquire and rengage in deeper water on the other side of the narrows? Or keep sinking pickets and DD's? I have 8 eels in the bow and 1 in stern left. They have 5 escorts and 2 pickets that are pinging me. Could sure use some seasoned Kaleaun help here. Thanks A.M.

Somebody said lastnight(I think Hueywolf), that you should turn off your Radar. They may be picking you up because you may have it on.

Anyhow, good luck.

Ohhh, be very carefull leaving your radar on, you might get some unwanted guests calling in. Use the radar sparingly, look at the aircover (on std map) and only use when out of these areas, no guarrantee, but a little safer.

You are at a tactical disadvantage due to the combination of the time of the war, grid location, boat type and patrolling air cover.

My best suggestion is to evaluate patrolling escorts tactics and choose your merchant targets with the intel you currently have. You must have a feel for the AI behaviour in this convoy by now.

Plot the convoy's future course. Make an box run around at flank and get ahead of the convoy at a safe distance away but still within hydrophone range so you can check its progress. Watch very carefully for patrolling aircraft ahead of the convoy. Your radar threat receiver will barely give you enough time to dive.

Alternately, go flank at schnorkel depth but with your observation scope raised and pointed skyward to observe aircraft. The choice is yours.

Choose darkness to attack.

Pick an entry point behind the lead escort that will bring you an intercept course with your pre chosen targets, keeping in mind your exit point and post attack evasion strategy when the pickets move to where you were.

Target only those ships that are pre chosen. Do not attack side targets of opportunity. Stay focused on your plan, control the battle. Don't lose the initative by being distracted. Lose this initative and you die.

Correctly positioned you can enter the convoy at ahead slow, silent running. Make your attack pass, firing at close range at your chosen targets. Go for engine rooms. You can clean them up later when the convoy has gone.

Keep at least 2 torps, 1`front, 1 rear, set shallow and fast for anti escort self defense- only. If you have pink tips, so much the better.

Set your repair crew up beforehand in readiness.

The IX are big boats, noisy and easily found. On your attack pass drop Bold Canisters just outside and between the ship lanes to assist the confusion of the escorts.

Stay at silent running unless the opportunity to reload withoput being heard is available or repairs must be made to save your boat. However if you need major repairs, you have lost the initative. We will send telegrams of condolences.

Keep your scope as low in the water as practical, minimise up time. This is vitally important.

If it don't feel right, if you don't have the battle plan clear in your head, don't do it. There will be another convoy.

However, if you do have it clear beforehand, well planned and carry that plan out with singled minded focus, this is what BDU means by "be more aggressive".

Thanks for the excellent response Balrick. I think I will take your advice and disengage and set a course for best speed through the narrows, then catch convoy on other side in better water.I'm a little concerned about battery power too. I think I must deal with the DD's that are pinging me first. You are right about Type IX being easy to detect, as it is a larger boat. It also easier to hit because of this and dives like a pig, not to mention they have hedgehogs. I am in shallow water which makes it worse. I have already set course for deeper water and posted DC team but it looks pretty bleak. If I can avoid first pass I might be able to sink the first DD with torp set shallow and fast. Then deal with other DD. I hate to waste ammo but it's better than an introduction to Davey Jones. I was right in the middle of this scenario last PM and had to hit the sack for work. Gotta love this game, it certainly keeps you thinking. Thanks again brother. A.M.

Attempted to disengage last PM. First DD went over top of me and dropped wabos whcih exploded a little too deep but still damaged rear torpedo launchers, deck gun and flak. Flooding in aft torpedo which made the boat begin to sink as I trying to get fix thru pscope. I was just able to get fix on DD and fire shallow fast runner G7A when the boat went too deep to allow for pscope viewing. Secured from silent running, flank speed and put damage control to work. Torpedo contact followed by explosion. Luckily the rudders were ok and the stern dive planes damaged, but still able to work. Gave Damage control team as many engineering ratings as I could - but we were still sinking. Blow main ballast twice which slowed the descent rate to tolerable level and Damage control team stopped flooding. Still had to deal with second destroyer about 4000 meters or so aft of boat. Stepped the engine power down as Stealth meter dictated while I was running for deeper water about 12000 meters off the bow.
Everett Class destroyer with a very good sonar operator was closing and I knew we would never make it. They were pinging me about 2000 meters away!Checking progress #6 torpedo tube was danaged and unfirable- my only aft torpedo I had left. Set TDC #6 torp to 1.5 meters and fast and now I am waiting for repair, going to 14 meters for a look at this guy. Upscope and bearing down on me at 1000 meters is destroyer with bones in its teeth. Down scope and set bow eels for shallow in preparation for repeat of pass and shoot tactic that worked on first DD. I know this guy has hedge hogs so it will be tricky. We are ahead slow but not silent running as I really would like to use aft shot and need to allow Damage control to fix that tube. I go ahead and ping depth below the keel and we have 64 meters to play with. Not enough time to dive unfortunately. Up scope- DD is at 700 meters coming fast, bearing 210-so I give right rudder command to line up for better shot. Pretty dicey situation since I think he will course correct and come right over the top which would be very bad. Luckily he is zigging and actually helps us out. Just as he passes about 600 meters coming rapidly I get message #6 tube fixed and don't hesitate to hit red button (Forgot to mention I had opened tube with Q button earilier) the eel takes off -left 090 flank speed, open #1 tube for passing shot- down scope, new depth 17meters to allow him to pass by without collision if eel misses. Torpedo contact! new depth 14 meters - up scope. waiting for the scope to come up he is pinging like crazy and I am not sure if I hit him aft or what. Finally, after what seems like ages, with pinging still going strong, scope clears the waves and I see that warship is fatally wounded and going down slow. Down scope- new depth 75 meters ahead flank. Battery meter is now just above yellow so I need some distance
before I get more DDs. When the stealth meter goes green I go to ahead 1/3 and time compress X64 new depth 14 meters. Up scope for a quick look around and schnorkel for batteries. No way to catch convoy so I go to my hole, recharge and now I am on my way to narrows to have a look around. Quite an exciting game- you can sure get immersed in it! Reading the post I can't help to notice the exact numbers on depth under the keel...

I take it you ping the bottom -- that's a no no when enemy is nearby. No need for radar being on, the pinging will do just the same.

The numbers under keel were generalized-It might have 73 or 68 -I just gerneralized when writing report, Also meters to DD weren't exact. I don't normally ping with destroyer that close- but in this case I had to-I needed to know the depth for possible crash diving. I started out shallow and I knew it would get deeper so I pinged it for that. They already had me because they were pinging me like crazy. I didn't use radar- I don't use it when I am pursuing convoy unless I lose them-I use it in open water sometimes. You are right- pinging and radar are ways to rob yourself of stealth. My wife thinks I have lost my mind- supper was cold by the time I got to it! Just illustrating how captivating this game is- Corpe ventum-A.M.

Oops I forgot to include that in the first text I had already pinged bottom when convoy and pickets were well out away from me. I can see where it looks like I am pinging in close proximity- good catch! A.M.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif This is a really good point, and one I've just recently begun to learn. I've fractured a lot of convoy attacks by getting greedy and trying too hard to grab quantity rather than a couple of precision kills.
