View Full Version : I'm actually flying the original sim namesake for a change.

I have been a 95% offline campaign flier in this sim since the demo came out. But one thing struck me the other day. I had never tried flying a campaign in the IL-2 Sturmovik!!! I have tried every fighter type and even most other bombers in this sim in a campaign. I have even flown careers in fighters that are not by default available to fly in campaign mode, because I edit the Dgen scripts to allow careers in them.

But of all the crazy things, I had never flown the IL-2 of all things. Except maybe in a few quick missions. So I started a campaign at the beginning of the war that will take me through the whole war flying all types except the dedicated interceptor IL-2 and the torpedo model.

One thing that impressed upon me was how easily the IL-2 FM allows for dogfighting fighters. Should the FM of the IL-2 be a bit more sluggish in handling?? I was in formation with 3 other Sturms and we were closing in for a ground attack when two 109E-7s zoomed in and latched onto the flight leader.

Well, let me tell you, I did not take to kindly to this nonsense. So I promptly shot both of them down in a turn fight within about 30 seconds. I mean really, the nerve of those two AI 109 pilots. What did they they think this was, some kind of war or something??

But if the real IL-2 really flew like that, wouldn't there have been more instances of Soviet IL-2 pilots taking out German fighters??
Not to start a topic war or a fishing expedition but methinks the FM for the IL-2 is overly optimistic. Either that or I'm the best pilot that ever lived, which I sincerely doubt. The litheness and agility of it is beyond imagination for such a heavy and large aircraft.

I can't, have not owed a cassette player since the year 2000 or so. Do they have a MP3 version??

Ohhh, I loved the IL2 with the bullet proof P.11 and the komet engined 30mm cannoned Hurri

The early IL-2's are fairly nimble for their size and weight, but rather slow. They do however B&Z readily if given the chance. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The IL-2 gets progressively heavier and less responsive as the war goes on, then you get the IL-10, and that REALLY is a "Beast" of a plane, makes the IL-2 look wimpy. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I started flying this sim as a dedicated IL-2 jock, I dont fly it much anymore, but its a solid, easy, and forgiving plane. And tough as nails to boot! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

When I build my next PC later in the year, probably late fall, I'll install my copy of '46. Right now my copy is covered with dust. I still run Win98 on my old PC and there are issues with it and '46. I want to fly '46 with a .exe file that I cannot mention on this forum. It won't work in Win98SE. If I get it running with the copy protection, there are severe performance issues. So it's not worth it for now. My old PC can barely run 4.05 as it is on low settings. I still run with TI-4600 video card!!!
