So, Anno 1800 is a great game I really enjoy playing it, but as a long time RTS player, the controls of ships just annoys me. There should be some basic commands to alter ship behaviour, like hold position, defend port etc. Also to keep formation and set rotation. Now they just chase random pirate gunboats even when they are much slower result in them being in the no man's land to be hunted by enemies. Also, we should be able to alter charter routes path, I took an island in new world for fertility, but only then I noticed that between it and the old world there is a pirate island resulting in all ships destroyed, so I allocated ton of resources and destroyed the island only for pirates to return few years later, when my armada was fighting other enemy in old world (I didn't even know they can come back, more so full strength in 1 sec).

other than that, great game ;)

I agree that the fleet needs some formation discipline. Now they all act like the captains are deep in the grog.
The automatically follow the pirates has cost me way too many ships. And even when ordered out of the battle, they sometimes decide on their own to return to it.
And the whole escort system is a disaster. It is not much use when you have the escort vessels 1/3 of a map away from the main vessel.

Yes, I just had it with this game. Despite I love it soo much, the AI is freaking disgusting. Pirate ships seems broken, comming with 10 ships stacked on each other to destroy my trade routes. I am fine by that tbh, although it is wierd that you have 10 spawns stacked on each other..... But when your gunships start chasing pirate ships half the map leaving your trade ship alone..... Is disaster. Why the heck do the escort ships literally get off course? And even better, if your chasing escort ships survived.. they will just go idle in the middle of the map. If you have 10 trade routes running, you have no time then to simply check all your routes constantly because they get broken. Cant even pause the game and check what is going on, because you can't watch the UI on pause, another garbage feature.

Set patrols in your trade routes, put ships on passive and escort, they won't follow pirates all the way to the other side of the map (they never had). For routes to the new world you can go to the trade route setting and in the map move the route up and down, thus moving them away from possible pirate/enemy infested routes and concentrating all your ships in one route, making it a lot easier to defend.

But yeah, the ship AI needs some tweaking, maybe add other ship stance options such as never follow and never break the escort.

Ships should get an 'evade ports' option, while still attacking ships. I regularly lose battleships to an AI's port cannons if my escorting ships automatically chase an enemy frigate that attacked my trade vessel.

On the other hand, I love how powerful and useful port cannons are, good job in balancing!
