I think he was just crossing over from the UK to France in a transport aircraft(C47?) and it crashed. I haven't "Googled" it though...

It was a C-64, single-engined transport/utility type.

------------------------------------------------------------i saw a show on this once. yes, he was "lost" over the english channel i think.(cant remember)they believe that a returning flight of bombers just happened to jettison thier bombs while passing over glens transport and, as fate would have it, one bomb hit the plane and exploded. talk about bad luck. there is alot of conterversy over that though.

Awww... if this is true all I can say : "What a waste!"

Just a bit more information concerning his death. The reason why it was not reported as it really happened was because of the international incident it might have created. The American public would have been upset further if they had learned the thruth.

It was a RAF bomber group returning from a raid and they jettisoned their bombs at the wrong time and place. Of course, they had no idea. Nothing but bad luck.

In fact, the plane was a Canadian-built Noorduyn Norseman. It was called C-64 when in USAAF service.

Some say that he didn't die in that plane. There are witnesses that saw him in Paris, in a "bad reputation house"... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

They tell that he was murdered by some bad dudes there, and Allies managed to hide the incident, because he was a very popular man, and they wanted to preserve his image, not to demoralize the country... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

The claim by one of British crewmen who saw the little plane get swamped by the splash of the jettisoned bombs seems to be undeniably true. The weather was horrendous with most England based a/c grounded that day. Miller's plane was flying low, just above the sea because of the dense overcast. There were no other a/c flying, so it certainly was Miller's plane.

My dad, a Capt. with a BG based at Bassingborn, got to sit in with the band (clarinet) when it visited his base. Miller went down five days later.

Yeah, I agree with with that. I'm sure that his Norseman crashed.

I just wanted to share some gossip that was running those days... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You might have heard that he supposedly joined the French (or Dutch) Underground and then was captured by the Germans and tortured. I'd like to think was a spy on an super-ultra-secret mission that only a bandleader could carry out; like sabotage a tuba factories in the Ruhr Valley.
