SYDNEY (AFP) - Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho" greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was reported Thursday.

Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.

One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US slang term for prostitute.

"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free 2B Kids.

"We are talking about little kids who do not understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.

"Leave Santa alone."

A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of the individual Santa himself.

Santa is getting his FAA Checkride.

Santa notices examiner approaching sleigh with shotgun.

Santa asks, "What's the shotgun for?"

Examiner: "You're going to have an engine failure on takeoff."

One of my students lived in Aussie for a couple years. He didn't like it. I ask him why and he said it was because football was forbidden in his school. He went on to explain that the school's reason was that people could get hurt. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Years ago in Toronto, the media stopped saying "Merry Christmas" in order to not offend the non-Christians; Happy Holidays was considered PC. As non-Christian, I was offended by the change.

What's next? No more scary costumes on Halloween?

That's like saying don't spank your kids, it teaches them to hit. We know how to hit from birth, it's ridiculous to think we somehow learn to hit. We call people names from the time we learn to talk... It's part of our nature.

This political correctness is ******ed. Most of the people it's supposed to 'help' or 'protect' just view it as plain silly from what I see.

Yes it is very silly and the general mood in Sydney is that is over the top. Many Santas have quit in digust. We do have a federal election this weekend and I am glad both political parites have commended it. I believe an American within the recruiting firm is the one who took offense to it.

Its time to shake the idiots back up again! Another beach riot with Santas taking on the PC police. I`ll pay to watch that!

Poor old Santa, - Stuck in the North Pole all year, making presents for all the children, and all he wants when he hits civilisation is a couple of HO's, and they don't want to give him any. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

It's not as if he's doing it on the sly like Billy Graham, and a few others, he's quiet 'open' about it. Hey! I'm sure a few HO's would also like a Xmas present or two

It's probably people who do not spend enough time with their children (if they have any). It they did spend more time they'd find that kids are not that bad (we were kids too) and are sensible about most things.
Trying to sensor to much will create 'time bombs'. Be with them, talk to them, be their friends.. you know http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

"ho' is not slang for a prostitute in the USA.

It is slang for women in general in some 'rap' songs and in some neighborhoods. But not in all neigborhoods and not everywhere in the US.

Bearcat99
11-16-2007, 07:45 AM
Ho derives from *****.. as in pimps and hos... it is an old term from the 40s.. It has been made popular by some hip hop "artists" today who have glamorized the life of the pimp. For more info I recommend the works of Donald Goines (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0324786/bio) and Iceberg Slim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceberg_Slim) and Claude Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Brown) if you want a little schooling.

Not literary giants by any means but storytelling is storytelling... and they were great storytellers in true griot fashion.

It is a testament to the state of affairs in any society when becoming a pimp or a stripper is a career choice.. and a generation of young men sees nothing wrong with addressing women in general as *****s.. but here in the U.S. much of that did not happen in a vacuum but I cannot go into that too much here because that will take things waaaay off topic.. and this thread started out about Santa... It has already veered off from the original intent so to be consistent.. I will lock it.

Man... I never thought I'd be posting about Iceberg Slim on a flight sim forum... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Getting back on topic, is Santa trying to make a political statement by wearing red, giving away all his material possessions to society, and refusing to buy a mini-van? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

This could be why some democracies are censoring him. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
