chased a zero in 4.01, with 109 k, mustang, spit, could not catch, it can stay ahead while climbing as well. the zero is not the fastest plane. but it seems to be now. I then chased in a zero, and speed did match 1 to 1. so there is some consistency. the new flight model is great for ground pounding which is what I do most, very happy, but the dog fighting will take some getting used to. over all though, I am pleased with new patch. need mosquito though.

I have noticed this ever since the Zero was introduced to this game. It is very easy to out run at any altitude if it has no energy advantage, however if you begin a steep climb or you follow a zero that is climbing steeply and you both have an idicated airspeed of 250 kmph then you can chase the zero to 10,000 meters and not catch it or it can chase you to 10,000 meters and you will not be able to out run it. It's high altitude performance in this game is very good.

its *really* high alt performance is rubbish

its hits a wall at 7K , Zero's suck up high

when it was first introduced (the M5) it was incredible at high alt , totally dominated mk5 Spits over 7K in DF ability

now its the exact opposite

The Zero is one of the best high AOA climbers in the game, as it should be. Look at the wingloading, and you will understand why this plane can nearly stand on it's prop.

The Zero consist of only four elements:

An engine, guns, fuel tanks and rice paper*. The rice paper is wrapped a thousand times in areas in which it needs to support weight, such as engine and wing suspension.
So, if it doesn't have a lot of fuel left in its tanks, it flies like nothing else.

I tested this myself. Shoot at any time at a zero from any angle and it instantly burns like a torch.

The zero was a great plane, very much advanced when facing off the early american and european fighters, their flying characteristics fabulous (including speed), their range unbelievable and their armament very decent, an early plane to fly with cannons, but their armour was, simply said, completely absent.
very much in line with the japanese idea of warrior honor, to fight and simply win, there was no alternative. In this perpective I'm amazed they even had parachutes.
I wonder what would have happened if the planes had been better armoured. A lot of experienced fighters might have lived longer to fight another day. On the other hand, bailing and surviving in the pacific was questionable at best. Hate to decide: jump over shark infested ocean or new guinea? though choice..

And now the real answer; since patch 4.0 introduced new FM modeling the biggest problem for most players was(is) enhanced torque effect for wich you have to compesate with rudder corrections; without it you can not achieve your max speed, just find the slip indicator and keep it centered you will catch them...
