Yestarday was my first encounter with a hedgehog. And I believe it is one of the worst

ASW weapons (from the submariner's poin of view). I was wondering if the DD lsot contact

with me, since it stopped pinging. Then, i took a peek outside with an external cam, only to

see 24 projectiles flying in a circle. Know how the manual says that one hedgehog has no

potential of a catastrophic kill? I believe that is true. However, in my case i guess the

DD missed, since the center of a circle was to my port side.. However, that meant that i was

hit by about 1/4 to 1/3 of the projectiles, all along the boat. The resilt- damage to every

compartment and flooding in all of them. The DD closed in and placed a final period in the

life of a captain and his crew.

Sounds scary, indeed, for a U-boat man. I'm dreading my first encounter with the 'Hog. Does anybody here have any screenshots of the 'Hog in use? I'd love to see them.

i don't see how any self respecting navy could use hedgehogs in such a mean way! just look at how cute they are!

I have had the pleasure of encountering hedgehogs twice. The first time was while I was hunting a convoy, I got so focused on the convoy I did not see the DD behind me until a split second before it fired (dead). The second time I had a little warning and only caught one or two of the rounds but it hit right in the stern torps / engine room. I fired one torp off killed the dd (love homers) dropped decoys as I fired, and then sat on the bottom trying desperately to repair the damage. I spent two days about two hundred feet off the coast of France trying to get the boat up to snuff but I had to go home for repairs. Never even got out to my patrol grid on that trip. Personally I think the hedgehog was one of the best anti submarine weapons of World War Two. Heck I think it was king until better homing torpedoes and ASROC came along.

The idea of a hedgehog was to damage the submarine and let the sea pressure do the rest. so one "hog" could do catostrophic damage.

A little more info on Hedgehogs from a british destroyer captian, Donald MacIntyre:

"It was not until April, 1943, that Hesperus was ready for sea. While being repaired, she also gained a new acquisition in the shape of a "Hedgehog". This was a weapon which, mounted on the forcastle inplace of A gun, could fire a pattern of twenty-four depth bombs 250 yards ahead of the ship on the estimated position of a submarine. The bombs exploded on impact only, but a single hit on the hull of a submarine was calculated to be sufficient to tear a hole and so sink her. The fact that a near miss was literally 'as good as a mile', which was not so with a depth-charge, was a disadvantage, but we had long felt the need of a weapon of this sort which would enable us to deliver an attack while stil in asdic contact. For with a depth-charge attack, in which it was necessary to run over the submarine, contact was lost as the ship got close and there was a 'dead period' during which the submarine could manoevre away from its previosly forecast position. We were all very excited about our new weapon and hoped to get a chance to use it."

They did get a chance to use it but as they tried to fire the Hedgehog for the first time, they realized that they did not have time to release the safety mechanism before they would run over the submarine. The dumby warheads that they had practiced with did not have the same safety mechanism that the live warheads had and the crew didn't realize how long it would take to remove the safety pins on all 24 warheads until they tried to fire them. Kind of amusing really. They sunk the U-Boat (U-191) with depth charges instead.

Cheers,

J
