Here is a tip for using a snorkel for something else than cruising underwater. Say your watch crew notices a DD when its way too late and you have to crash dive. The boat usually sinks to

the point where the water touches the top of the conn tower. Then the engines turn off and the boat floats for a couple seconds, losing speed. However, if you have a snorkel, you can

raise it in the process of crashdiving, giving you about 15 or more kts of speed when the engines turn off. The boat sinks much faster this way, and you can then retrieve the

snorkel. Therefore you get more depth more quickly, initially at least.

Nice tip, have to remember that when anyting is getting too close.
