If you're running Win XP and are getting Java-related error messages when you try to install Myst V (also see the install log in the Program Files Myst V folders), some or all of the following may be necessary. Note that if you do all of the following and continue to experience Java errors, the problem may be defective game CD's or DVD. If that's the situation, the solution is to exchange the game as being defective.

See sections 1 through 4 under Installing and Re-Installing EoA in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/6171031163). Then re-install Java and EoA as follows.

1. Do all of the steps under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/6171031163), then start EoA. If the tune-up didn't fix the problem, proceed to step 2.

2. Reinstall Java from a clean boot. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and:
-- a. Go to the Java Downloads for All Operating Sytems page (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp).
----- 1. Under Windows, click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline download link.
----- 2. Download jre-6u13-windows-i586-p-s.exe to a folder, not to the Desktop, and write down the name of the folder to which you download. Do NOT use a "download accelerator" or "download helper" utility, including the Sun Download Manager.
----- 3. When the download is complete, close Internet Explorer.
-- b. Uninstall your existing version of Java using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
----- 2. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the version of Java you want to uninstall. If you have multiple Java versions (either Sun or Microsoft) installed, remove *all* of them. Look for entries like "J2SE Runtime Environment X.X Update X", or other Sun Java entries. Also check for Microsoft Java Virtual Machine entries.
----- 3. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
----- 5. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop.
-- c. Reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- d. Click Start > Run.
-- e. Type msconfig in the Open: box, then click on OK.
-- f. Click on Selective Startup on the General tab.
-- g. Under Selective Startup, clear the check boxes for:
----- 1. Process SYSTEM.INI File
----- 2. Process WIN.INI File
----- 3. Load Startup Items
-- h. On the Services tab, click the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, then click Disable All.
-- i. Click on OK, and then click on Restart.
-- j. Install Java.
----- 1. Click on Start > Run and Browse... to jre-6u13-windows-i586-p-s.exe.
----- 2. Double-click on this file to put it in the Open: box.
----- 3. Click on OK to start the installation process.
-- k. When Java installation is complete, restore the settings you changed in steps e. through h.
----- 1. Click Start > Run.
----- 2. Type msconfig in the Open box, then click on OK.
----- 3. Click on Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services on the General tab.
----- 4. Click on OK, and then click on Restart to reboot into normal Windows.
-- l. Verify that Java is installed, enabled, and working properly.
----- 1. Click on Test your Java Runtime Environment (http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp).
----- 2. On the Verify Installation page, click on the VERIFY INSTALLATION box. Press Spacebar or Enter to activate the control applet, if necessary.
----- 3. Close Internet Explorer when you see "Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 13)."

3. Use Windows Explorer to find the InstallShield folder, probably in \Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield, and rename it to something like \Program Files\Common Files\OLD_InstallShield. Then install EoA from a clean boot as detailed in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/6171031163). The InstallShield folder should be re-written during the install process. If the install fails, find the folder again, and this time delete it. Then, do the EoA install again.

4. If your virtual memory paging file is located on drive C: and you have two drives/partitions, try moving the paging file to D:. And vice-versa! See How To Move the Paging File in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307886) for details.
