S! All,

I was flying with my squad last night and we had some questions about two external features of the AR-234, and I figured someone here would be able to answer them.

Question 1 - What is this "fan" on top of the fuselage used for.

Question 2 - What are these struts on the elevators used for?

http://home.comcast.net/~ronnied316/AR-234_Elevator.JPG

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hold on, I'll have to double check but from memory alone I believe you are looking at part of the (1)master compass, (2)and mass balances on the elvators.

That is not a fan on top of the fuselage, I believe its an aerial for direction finding. The Ju88 has the same type.
As for the struts on the elevators I am not sure, part of the mass balance?

Well acording to my references the first one is indeed a so called Suppressed Direction Finder antenna.
The second one is the elevator hinge, no mass balance attached.

I reckon with a full load-out, it needs all the help it can get to take off http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif , I always seem to struggle getting altitude in it with 3 500K bombs onboard - probably trying to gain altitude too quickly methinks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Does anybody know the reason they needed such large hinges for the elevators?

Thanks for the responses, the Suppressed Direction Finder was a cool piece of equipment, and much better than a fan. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The thing on top is the socket for R2D2. Dunno about the flap thingies.
