I started a new patrol last night and as I was heading south to my patrol grid I got a radio message about a south bound convoy that was in my vicinity. After making contact with the convoy and diving to get ahead, I took a look a what we had. Well, what do you know, besides seven troopships and some nice big tankers, there's the King George 5 sailing right in the middle of the convoy. Now here is the target of opportunity that I'm asking about. It took all six torpedoes ( patrolling in a Type XIC) to sink that BB. After I had emptied all my tubes into the KG5 I headed deep and was kept down until the convoy was long gone. I was never able to regain contact with it.

My question is this, would you sink the KG5 or sink some of those troopships that are carrying troops that may well be taking be headed toward a battle with the German Army somewhere? What would you do? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

id do both

target the KGV under her keep with 2 torps

and 2 transports under their keels

then swing around at flank speed and fire an impact torp into the KGV, reload if i can and attack the othert troopships and finish the battlewagon

if possible cripple the troopships and finish em off later with gunfire

maybe thats just me...

While the KG5 would be tempting, your job is to try and strangle the British into surrender. They really didn't want the U-boats to go out and sink the enemy fleet (as the US did in the Pacific when they could), they wanted you to send tankers, freighters, etc to the bottom.
With that mandate, I'd say nail as many troop ships as you can. You could take out a division or more if you're lucky. I doubt sinking the BB would have any real impact on the war.

Troopships. By the time WW-2 kicks off, a Battleship is a relic. Good for showing the flag, shore bombardment, or as an AA screen for a carrier. It's a dinosaur. A sexy dinosaur to be sure, but still a dinosaur.

Sink 3 or 4 troopships, and you stop a division or more of troops from entering the fighting. Sink 3 or 4 tankers, and the planes have no fuel or the tanks are short on gas. Either is better than putting torpedoes into a Museum piece.

I'm starting to think a a German submarine captain, guess this game is more addicting than I thought. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Next time it will be the troopships rather than the the dinosaur. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

sinking the BB makes for a serious propaganda splurge back home in the fatherland, celebrations in Ireland and greatly demoralizes Great Britain.

Not to mention the lasting effect of future operations by the British, they have a need for such large ships in major operations. Each one that gets sunk changes how they wage war.

Sink a troop ship and they weep.
Sink a battleship and they bleed.

Sinking a heavy man of war changes the way the allies do convoys. It forces allies to do 1 of 2 things, pull another heavy MoW off of offensive operations or not put a heavy MoW as a convoy escort. Either way that opens up possiblities for German surface forces to hurt the allied war effort.

one thing is for sure if you sink a battle ship all alone in 39-45 your name Would be in the history books for meny years.... and you would be a great hero in Germany until the war ended.

The troopships. In RL, they'd all have to stop or come back for survivors, they'd not leave 1000s of men to die in the water.

Wouldn't change the war either way, ships were bing built faster than they were being sunk. Propaganda victories for the germans would be pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things, they already had popularity and solidarity at home.

Not quite, true the flat-top took over, and the subs sank the most shipping, but no one was sure when WWII started. BBs were still considered the main capital ships, besides as others have said they still were used to screen against surface raiders.

Actually, BBs were involved in more surface scraps and fired their guns more often in WWII then in WWI when they were the queens of the sea.

Either way, guys, I've still got that SH1 mentality. If I see a capital ship in my periscope I will be trying to put it on the bottom. But at the time I attacked the KG5, I thought maybe those troopships should be going down also. hard decision. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Sink as many as you can!

But this is a game, there are some rules (or things that you should follow), one of them is that a BB is worth at least 1500 renown (the Hood in GWX is 2500), and weight 30K something; troppship is about 370 renown and 7~8K tons. You have to sink 4 to 5 troopships to catch up another skipper who sink a BB!

But for me, I will sink them all, just like IcyMarky1984.

i woudl have gone for a 2 well placed torpedoes in the engine room of the KG5. and the rest is pretty obvious of what i woudl have done
