Now I know this is probably all old to you guys, but I thought I would share with you my mission.Took off in Mission 4 USN Coral Sea,shot down 3 planes, one of which was to save a buddy, then landed successfully on my flat-top.All with real settings.Oh my god I am so happy. You guys probably do it every day,but its my first time.Hopefully not my last.I normally bounce off the ship,or lose my wings, etc.Anyway, just thought I would share that with you. What a sense of satisfaction it gave me.Can't wait for BoB.

Congrats! It is a rush to know you have accomplished something like a carrier landing with the difficulty cranked all the way up. It certainly isnt easy!

Congrats!

All the guys I fly with "kissed" the stern of the carrier, bounced off the deck into the water or smashed into the superstructure for quite a while once we got carriers. Some of them still can't make carrier landings consistantly.

successful landings are still the best part of the mission. even when you get consistant, you just never know...especially when you're all shot up.

Carrier landings are the hardest thing you will ever do. I practice and still have a real hard time with the escort carriers. I often catch the very last cable and that stretches out so far that I coast right off the bow and into the drink.

may i give u an advice... well ill do it anyway
try to come in as flat as passible to avoid bouncing off.. AND remember to Lower the hook
hate zero hook its so small!!!

Haha, i remember i made my first successful trap with the Seafire, since it has a hook the hangs down about as far as the plane is long...
anyways, i hooked it and rolled to a stop...nothing broken.
So, i try it again with the corsair.
The hook's long, but it still requires the landing gear to be on the deck.
So, i ended up bouncing, slamming into the deck, and losing everything but the cockpit as i flipped and rolled all over.
But since i stayed on deck...i marked it a success.

the trickiest carrier approach I did was made without aileron controls, that makes you sweat a bit!

Congratulations- that's great! I've been at this for a bit and still count myself lucky if I can walk away from a cracked-up aircraft.

Cheers!

Feels cool to do that, eh?! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Carrier landings are always the most interesting part of the missions I've flown, especially when my mount is all shot up. I can consistently land on the flattops on a regular basis now, but it never, never gets boring!

Congrats!

Well done!! Inspired by your feat, I just went out and did the same thing - my first time also (took me a few goes mind you)

Trick seems to be to come in slightly from the starboard side - time before I yawed slightly right on touchdown, caught the last wire but smashed into the island http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I think the engineers at Norfolk designed the Sara's/Lex's islands as if to say. "Yeah, go ahead! I DARE ya to miss this!".

At any rate, I just recently discovered that it is easier to swing around from the side of the flattop when making a trap - always keeping the deck in view - instead of coming straight in. Especially in the Corsairs, with that mile long "I lie all the time" nose of hers!

Ahh, life's full of small challenges...

I agree with everything previously posted in this thread. It's such a relief and a good feeling when you fold your wings and turn off the engine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have often seen some WWII carrier footage on TV. Don't for once think it was easy landing on those things. You surely had to have big ones.

Carrier Ops is where it's at! I love it. Nothing like surviving a long mission, navigating back to the boat and then trying to trap. Gets the blood pumping! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Congrats on it. Its a great achievement.

I still fubar on landings, so don't worry about it, its not meant to be easy.

One of my famous fubar's went something like this. (SBD)

Had an undamaged plane, Good angle of attack and early set speed. Dropped hook, all navs on. Quick look through the dive sight showed me pointed at the far end of the deck. I was square on, just above stall - everything looked perfect.

So i aim for first wire, no need for engine to boost flare and trap successfully.

Next thing i know, my porp is all screwed, i hear that horrible scratching, scraping noise as my plane slides to a stop. I am stunned for a minute, no idea of what had happened. Then it hits me.

Hell, try accidentaly dropping your hook at take off ... I was going fullbore and just not accelerating ... finally my m8 says .. "You know you snagged a wire, right ?" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Carrier landing isnt easy. It needs a lot of training on land to do job done. But one thing annoys me. If I forget to tell my wingman to break. It looks like band of suicide pilots going for landing. Im the only plane who is landing right. Planes under my command carelessly crash to the deck and water blowing me up. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Be happy, I used to fly real planes and have flown sims for years and sometimes I flub a carrier landing!! Real WWII pilots did sometimes too!! About once or twice a year I'll even flub a land landing. But usually it's a case where I put down the gear by hitting the "G" key but forgot that I did and end up hitting it again, thereby stowing them back up again. Nothing like a gear up landing every now and then!! In real life, it's harder to do that since you have a nice switch that's positionally up for gear up and down for gear down. And you check the gear lights too as part of the check list. In game you can't see them half of the time without scrolling down with the mouse.

I vaughly recall reading that this was a technique employed by real Corsair pilots. I'm not sure if it was common practice but it sure works!

Congrats, now it's time to have some fun. When you fold wings while airborn you have around 1.5 seconds worth of leeway with a Corsair. If you have good timing you can have the wings halfway up by the time you stop. Always fun, expecialy online.

as you see i still havent gotten good at landing on land even after a year and just picture a corsair or f4f5 in the same shape as the mossie and you see my carrier attempts

How can I get B-25 carrier missions?

actionhank1786
03-11-2006, 03:29 PM
i just had a beauty of a landing with the SBD the other day.
I had a nice approach going, was coming in nice and slow...then i killed the engine a little early, the plane slammed into the very back of the deck, and somehow it launched the plane straight up into the air!
The plane floated above the deck and then came down, just about vertically onto the front deck and snapped the gear and wrecked the engine.
I'd say i could walk away so it's a good landing...but i'm pretty sure he snapped his spine http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif
