This has been posted before, but still needs to be addressed.

Petition signed.

I went onto this U-boat about two years ago.It still had the crews scarves and boots in the racks where they they were placed to dry when the crew had come down off watch. Very atmospheric.

The inside was obviously seriously damaged by its time under the sea.

One of the workmen responsible for maintaining the light system found an Iron Cross in the remains of the forward torpedo room and was honest enough to hand it to the museum staff with the comment:"Well I didn't earn it!"

U534 was rumoured to have been the vessel in which Himmler tried to escape Germany unsuccessfully.

So what do we want to do do with this piece of history? Chop it up!! I bloody despair of this country! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

I missed the first time around I guess...

Well I get the whole property is getting expensive and what not. Would be nice if someone could pick up the boat and find a nice home for it.

Hate to see is wasted.

what exactly is the protest? they're cutting it so it can be moved. presumably because its too big to move all at once.

once its reached its destination it will still be accessible to the public.

so whats the problem?

Good point..maybe cutting it up would destroy the boat.I would'nt approve of a Spitfire or Mustang being cut up for the same reason.

but are they gonna put it back together at its new location? I've found that relics like this that are supposed to be cut up to be moved, don't fare too well, as in just parts surviving for display...but that's usually aircraft. They may have no choice if they wanna move it. I hope it makes it back into one piece.

I really is amazing...it was under water for almost 50 years but it looks like its just been sitting in dock neglected for 10 (except for the little dent http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif ) I would love to see it treated like the U 505 , which I HIGHLY recommend , it is amazing standing next to it.

I think the original report is quite flawed in its accuracy. To my knowledge, and in the latest copy of the Warship World magazine, the news indicates that the U-boat will be housed in a dry dock close to the Maritime Museum in Liverpool. It will probably lie next to HMS Whimbrel (Black Swan Class Sloop), which I, and and lot of other people, have been campaigning to get back from Egypt as a Battle of the Atlantic memorial and museum ship. The latter project now has funding and is in the feasibility stage. I think Liverpool City Council and the dock owners realise the potential of having both the "hunter and the hunted" on display and publicly accessible.

I think the phrase "chop it up" has been used for drama and is misleading. The submarine may well be carefully dismantled at the main bulkheads for conservation and removal to the new site where it will be re-assembled. But it is certainly not being scrapped and I think people are being panicked unnecessarily over this.

It was a lot more critical over a year back when developers bought the museum site it was originally located at in Birkenhead for development. At that point it really did seem as if it could be scrapped along with a lot of other important naval ships berthed there. Thousands of us signed a petition then and I think that did have an influence on U-534's current continued existence and likelihood of preservation.

Bottom line is that U-534 is in good hands and will not be "cut up" for anything other than practical conservation reasons and ease of transportation.

Can we stop with the panic-mongering now please ?

This would be perfect to add to the ocean ans an artificial reef and dive site at 90ft.
