Or, why running on the surface in heavy fog is a VERY bad idea.

I was patroling in the gap between Scotland and Ireland (my boat captain thinks he's Irish, the crew just thinks he's into his whiskey again) on the surface, in a bit of a fog. Storm conditions, heavy precipitation, heavy fog and a surface run. I'm kicked out of map mode into my conning tower and I'm looking around for a target when this coastal merchant just APPEARS not more than 200 m away and headed right for me. Right full rudder isn't going to do much, but he slams into aft port quarter and just drags me along a bit until I can dive under him, further banging things up. I ended up with damage all across the aft end of the boat, a hull integrity of 39% and one electric engine running. Had to go back to port with nearly a full load of torpedoes too, giving everyone (including the nurses!) something to laugh about. Now it's mid-1941 and I swear that the British destroyers can see me in the dark http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

In the original Silent Hunter, the only way I would get killed was rammed by IJN destroyers or merchants in heavy fog.

I'm not sure, but maybe they have radars?
