I recently downloaded the "El Alamein" campaign. The graphics are great - and so are the AI pilots.
I seem to get quickly shot up (or shot down) no matter what I am flying. (I just hate it when P40's gash me when I'm in a Bf109)So I have two questions: (1) Is there some way to turn down the AI capability - say, to my level (which is somewhere between "easy and normal")? (2) Are there any good websites where I can educate myself on recommended ACM tactics for specific 'planes?

if your fighting against the p-40 best thing to do is boom and zoom (bnz) dive and then extend away and climb for another pass....

if your fighting as the p-40 always use turn and burn (tnb)

that should be a help

The AI is specified by the mission creator. So its not really possible to change it globally...it has to be done on a per plane or per wing basis. You COULD theoretically go through and make everything a rookie...but that'd take alot of time.

I'd try changing your tactics and seeing if that helps. As Jimbo points out, a 109 should boom and zoom a P-40 as the P-40 generally out turns the 109 but the 109 is faster and climbs much better (and is generally better armed).

Just maintain your speed (in climbs too - don't bleed it off too quickly) and you'll be ok.

Hey Guys-
Thanks for the ACM tips. After downloading the Italian/Balkans campaign, I discovered out of desperation how to fight the P11 when flying a G50(?). BnZ was the answer, after being smoked several times while trying to TnB. When the little fokkers got on my 6, I just climbed away from them, did a wingover (hammerhead?) and dove back on them, usually scoring hits, if not outright victories. Now where can I find the tactics guides for other planes? On the Internet, that is. I'll bet that someone, somewhere has seen or made a spread sheet that recommends preferred offensive and defensive ACM tactics at different altitudes between different planes.

The easiest way to turn down the difficulty would be Shift-E's Quick Mission Tuner. Look here; http://www.airwarfare.com/Sims/FB/fb_essential_files.htm
under mission editors & utilities.
You can open the missions and turn down the AI difficulty. As you probably noticed, most of the JG26 Schwarms are led by Aces like they really were. It makes for a steep learning curve and alot of pilots didn't make it.
Also the P40 and the 109F4 were a pretty even match regardless of what people say. It was mostly an issue of tactics. If the 109s had not been locked into low level Stuka escorts alot of the time, they probably would not have had as many losses as they did. That would not have changed the end results, however.
Most of the missions are evenly matched as they are designed to be played from both sides, but I frequently had to hit "refly" myself to finish the mission. I made them possible, but not easy for the most part.

If you don't get the QMT figured out, send me a PM and I can change the difficulty for you and send you the .mis files back.

Enjoy! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
