View Full Version : History and myth of 2 Weeks Be Sure

The first time I could find this in a forum message was 3-24-2004, but even then it was referred to as, "I hope it won't be the legendary "two weeks" again."

How long is 2 Weeks Be Sure? Does anyone know when it was first used and when was its promise first fulfilled?

It was always two weeks _maybe_ to a patch coming out and generally more than two weeks went by, sometimes much more.

The "Be Sure" came from other Olegisms. But the BS artists put them together for their kind of "fun".

You would have to be able to access the old Oleg Maddox Ready Room forum, and possibly the old pilots lounge. I've looked to see if the old forums are archived, but without luck.

That was back in the day when Oleg visited on Fridays and people were respectful. A lot has changed in 10 years.

Back then Oleg actually flew regularly on the UBI server with the community as well, usually in a bf109-G6AS if I recall correctly.

A lot of people were respectful but never less than a few were rude and demanding right from the start.

The old forums were on Lithium software instead of the current Eve/UBB platform and were pretty much completely lost in the course of several updates. Except for maybe an old Google cache or that project that was trying to cache the entire internet, you wont find anything from these forums much older than 2003 anywhere.

People were already making the "two weeks" comment before the original 2001 release was 18 months old, I don't recall any more clearly than that.

"People were already making the "two weeks" comment before the original 2001 release was 18 months old... Regards, Tully"

Ah, it has passed into myth and legend then. Thank you Tully and all.

Salute, and I think we will be playing this game for a long while yet.

The only thing I miss is that I wish Kami1 had been able to finish his B-29 project.

Memorial: Tinian, The Marianas: 1Lt. R. Gale Wilcoxon's crew of B-29, Snuffy “Them Shif’less Skonks, 676 Heavy Bombardment Sqd., 444th Bomb Group, 58th Wing. 5 of 11 original crew members killed or wounded in action.

Yokohama, Japan, May 29, 1945, 42nd combat mission: Snuffy is hit by flak, then attacked by fighters. Snuffy ditches off coast of Japan, and the sub USS Tigrone (SS 419) rescues 9 surviving crew members. Aircraft Commander, R.G. Wilcoxon, awarded 2nd Air Medal & Purple Heart. Tigrone goes on to rescue 31 zoomies on that patrol, the record lifeguard patrol for the war.

Still remember one nutcase (not a troll) with whom I argued because he tried to somehow excuse some real war monsters... to add to the tragedy he was studied law (or finished his studies, can't remember) so he fully understood what he was saying, it's a sorry thing to have (young) people like that in this world today.

Topic was allowed to continue for many pages, I guess that was found to be amusing to those who were doing moderating job at the time.

Anyhow, many such things turned this place into a popular ZOO, I was often saying that I never encountered such hostility (in various forms) on most forums I ever had a chance to see on net...

Civility probably declined in relation to the amount of new stuff to discuss.

I remember being able to read for hours stuff back and forth about the game, Eastern front, etc.

Once it was all relatively new...but now after so many years, there is not much new to discuss.

The fact that this forum has gone on as long as it has says much for the quality of the IL-2 series and the members of the community, despite the appearance of the odd troll every now and then. I've played many fight simulators over the years and IL-2 ties for first place, with FSX, as my very favorite.

I remember when I first played the original version of IL-2. As an American, I scarcely had the idea that Germany and Russia even fought each other during WWII, never mind the scale of the fight. It was something that was simply never taught or talked about when I was a kid. "'Merica won the war all by herself!" Now, along with the Pacific theatre of operations, the Eastern front is my favorite area of study in WWII. I own some 30 books and DVDs on the subjects and have read/seen them all cover to cover, some multiple times. I don't think my current knowledge of the Eastern front would ever be what it is today without that initial spark of interest created by my enjoyment of IL-2. That is probably the single biggest thing that I take away with this.

Things started to go downhill just after 9/11 when the Gulf War started.. but before that there were still trolls in here.. remember when France jokes were all the rage.. ? Oleg used to have a forum in here called Oleg's Ready room.. and we would get regular Friday updates.. but as for the "Two weeks be sure.." I believe it was after one of the 2.xx patches.. I think the "be sure" was the thing that Oleg added in reference to this sim correct? Just before PF was released and it was in reference to the next patch if I am not mistaken...

I think you are right BC, thats how I remember it too. I distincly remember Oleg using the Be Sure phrase in reference to one of the patches just prior to AEP.

He's still a rich source of material. One of his finest was delivered a little over 18 months ago in reply to a detailed question posted on the bannana forum. Oleg weighed the pros and cons, considered all angles and delivered the exquisitely multifunctional reply, Sure No.

Olegs Ready Room was where discussions held civil disagreements between people who would resort to abuses in General. by the time of AEP people were not respecting that anymore

Absolutely.. and it took 8 years and endless lobbying for at least 4 years in order to get an OT forum back here on these boards.. and we almost lost it again for some of the same types of stuff in 2008/2009. I am glad that we didn't.

as far as Mustang whiners being the worst.. well at least they never got a phrase coined after them.. One that I might add is still in use to this day. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I just googled two weeks from rof forum, wanted to read the orginal Oleg post, gues thats not posible enymore :( .

But I do remember reading it back in the day. People was frustrated and angry because of no news about a update. When Oleg finely answared the question of how long until the update, whit the famous two weeks be shure :D . But it did ofcourse not get famouse because it took two weeks, but because it took months after the two weeks post until the patch finaly arived. And the frustration of course came from that IL2 patches was free, but had more countent in each then the best of DLC today :)

So how long is two weeks? An undefined amount of time, that is most likely a ling time :P

Be sure."luftwhiners" came about because of the DM during the 1.x patches

the players of the EAW who went on the blue side had a massive disadvantage all the way untill the F model became available

once the Aces expansion came out it all changed tho, & by that stage the EAW was on the wind down

Olegs Ready Room operated a little different to the general & the pilots lounge - because Oleg was answering questions directly. people actually minded their manners

over the duration of the 1.xx patches it went steadily downhill - you have to remember also that IL2 had the largest online Air Combat population. with so many having knowledge & opinion over what should be changed, & with constant patches & beta patches, you had expectation that wasnt getting met

by the time of Aces release, ORR had open abuse like the other forums & Oleg was down to once a month posting

Come to think of it. I believe that like Tully said "Two weeks" was in use since the second or third patch.. It is "Two weeks.. be sure!" that has become the catch phrase.. and if I am not mistaken that came sometime after the AEP was released..
